Modern Yugioh (for me) started with PePe (Preformapal, Preformage, Draco), as it's whole gameplay/ gameplan was to build the unbreakable board. To counter it you had to run Kaijus, Kaiser Callosum, etc. Or just Win the die roll (go first). Yugioh in mid to late 2023 and now in 2024 feels like version 8.5 of PePe as e every deck is build unbreakable board, summon unaffected boss monster, or both.
They should lower the time limit so they dont have time to play solitaire 😂

My issue with most new special summoning mechanics (especially most extra summoning mechanics) is that they don't *mean* anything. They're total nonsense within the internal logic of the game's flavor. What is fusion summoning? It's when you combine two monsters to make something bigger and (potentially) more useful than its pieces. What is ritual summoning? It's when you fulfill special requirements and conditions to summon a monster that needs them for some reason. By contrast, what is Xyz summoning? What is happening to the materials, and why do they summon this specific monster? Why do the material monsters become part of the new monster in a way that looks more like what fusion should be doing? Same with Link monsters; What is the "link" being established, and why does it work the way that it does? No part of this is intuitive and if I try to explain it to a new player, any interest in the flavor of the game is totally lost.
I’m don’t necessarily care about a casual format, although I agree yugioh could use one. I care more about not being bottlenecked into a specific deck choice for a format to get a better “chance” of winning even though chance and luck have very little to do with it unless playing a mirror match; or being priced out because people think spending above 100$ for one piece of cardboard that isn’t a collector’s rarity is justified with known reprints coming at the end of the year. That’s is what I find un-inviting about the game and why I’ve played very seldom games on both MD and locals. The game is just not where it should be

There is no middle ground. They should be a bit more dramatic and split yugioh into two different games. Branding nightmare, but I think having two card games could take off.

Ritual monsters have always been my favorite. I feel like you have to have an actual strategy for them to work

Worst mechanic in the game by far. Unintuitive clunky cards full of random mechanics that feel out of place. Why tf do they go face up in the extra deck? Why is pendulum summoning a thing? Why the scales? Why 2 seperate effects? These cards are an absolute knightmare for new or returning players to learn. Most of their functionality is described in the rulebook and not on the actual cards. Also 2 separate effects means massive walls of text to read to understand what youre facing. Fighting pendulum players has you reading essays. Absolutely hate them lol worse part of the game by far
I fell off of the game around the time of 5D's mainly because of college. But when i was looking to get back into the game, that mechanic really made me feel like this game was not for me anymore. I did eventually find my way back to the game but actively avoided using pendulums. It's not rocket science but just a layer too much for me as a casual fan. So much of the game is now just waiting for an endless turn to finish which is why I stopped playing Master Duel. I don't envy Konami because you need to keep a game this old and established fresh but the danger of feature creep is hard to deal with
40:49 I think for Rush duels to truely succeed in the west it would *need* DM recognition and be marketed as a reboot to grab the attention of casuals and former yugioh players and would likely need an anime and/or movie to accompany it
The best way to not fix the problem but rather patch the problem is for Konami to completely STOP creating Brand New Archetypes and focus on expanding All the Existing Archetypes that they've already created. Each Existing Archetype needs to have several ways to play them. Links, Synchros, Xyz, and Fusions and if they want to save Pendulum mechanic, they need to give every Archetype 1-2 different sets of semi generic scales that can be thrown in. Or if people wanted, they could blend the different versions of the Archetype together instead of just running a specifically dedicated extra deck. If Konami would just do that for a while, and give every deck a Poplar, a Stratos, a dedicated Hand Trap, a ROTA, a Fusion Spell, a Rank-Up Spell, etc.. I really think that we would see Yu-Gi-Oh catch up with itself and then older Edison style decks would actually be more viable in Post Modern Yu-Gi-Oh and there would actually be more diversity in the Meta. Just as a For Instance theoretically, Snake Eye is still technically topping, but which Snake Eyes? The Pure Xyz Build? The Pure Synchro Build? The Pure Fusion Build, The Pure Link Build, or a Hybrid Build of all 4 with a splashable Snake Eye Pendulum Scale?

The best was 1st Gen the yugi and kariba and Pegasus preconswere the best up the the god cards only no syncro no link only rituals and polymerization that was the best format !!!!!!¡¡¡!!¡!!!@#$%!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd prefer if 4 player format isn't official. Keep it like how domain works Look at magic and how heavily they lean on commander to sell product. Sure it keeps casuals but it has killed most the competitive 1v1 standard and modern at a local level but it's also created the issue if before sets are out they're officially doing spoilers for the next set ahead or two. There's no rest. There's also balance where they shape the format harder too into a terrible balance that doesn't get corrected much unless all universally "go no we won't use X"

When I got back into the game my "old" cards worked in Synchros and Xyz. I did quit around Pendulums. Tapped out for many reasons. The more I look at the game - the happier I'm glad I quit.

sure but you gotta keep in mind edison format (and every past format like goats and tangu) are NOT how ppl used to play the game back than, when you remove the time limit from a format it kind of morphs and a lot of the fun it had fades away with it imo. (top 8 of goats nowdays is like 6/8 chaos turno, in edison 4/8 vayou turbo, this isnt really how tournaments compositions really were and there isnt really a way to play theese formats as they really were

It's funny how you mentioned that Speed Duels could take the "commander format" (with more life points)- This is exactly how I have been playing with my friends! 8000LP, 5 card starting hand, no one can attack during their first turn (so attacks only begin with the second turn of the first player). It's been working great, specially since we play more casual speed duel (singleton included, with the exeption of a fews cards). No one can OTK you that easily, and the average gameplay time feels right.
Truth be told imo i like pendulums better than xyz monsters they were pretty broken coming off synchro n fusions pendulums really brought the mechanics together id even say pendulum is better than links as well pendulums really do just feel like ways to benefit other mechanics that how i think they should be viewed as
Pure yigioh aka anime yugioh where you are stuck with an archtype well the anime plays highland pure most the time. I would love a pure deck category for master duel or some other yugioh product to help players get used to the game

Digimon after set 9 is ass though. they did what took yugioh 15 years to make (the towers boss) in 2 and the only way up is power creep harder
The question didn't even mention adding gore or sexier cards, just that it wouldn't be restricted by being a product for the one 6 year-old in the world that could sit and play Yugioh. Personally, I would love it cards stop being pointlessly censored, and I would love having weird, darker styles and tones of the early cards. Paul talking about Books-A-Million reminded me of when I played at Hasting's, they would give us pizza after we were done playing. That was a great time.

If GX Season 4 characters come to speed duels, Darkness/Nightshroud could get Lair of Darkness. It's too perfect and the power level would be fitting for a GX final boss
Regarding the pet peeves segment, I absolutely can't stand the constant hand shuffling as well. It reminds me of when people play shooting games and constantly swap between knife and guns like they've just downed a gallon of coffee.
