Steffi, so elegant and very gracious. Serena just remarkably talented. Very pleased to watch both players. Serena did put on a really good game at that age against another great player. It was a fun match to watch. Miss games like this.

Serena Williams and Steffi Graf are not just the two best female athletes in tennis history but women's sports period. This match was beautiful to watch in 1999 and even better now. The stoic, methodical grace of Steffi against the aggresive, emotional power of Serena....wish these two played one another in their prime, it would've been historic!

I'm a big tennis fan, been watching since the early 80's. Personally, these two women are the best ever and also happen to be my two favorite female tennis players of all time. The war of attrition in this classic match is extraordinary, U will never see a more athletic female tennis match again like this. The immovable object vs the unstoppable force. At the time Steffi a seasoned accomplished champion and Serena a young hungry phenom, U couldn't ask for a better match including a 12 year difference in age makes it a once in a lifetime classic, wish I was there watching the two G.O.A.T.'s.

@Illya Kuryakin Well I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I think Ana Ivanovic had the best forehand ever. It's just a shame that it came with a player who had major confidence issues (which consequently led to a terrible serve and a weak, predictable backhand). But the technique on her forehand was as close to perfect as you'll ever see, it was Federer level of good.

@@vincenzodimartino7327martino: The reason we still talk about Steffi is that a better player has emerged who happens to be black. And your white supremacist mentality would not accept the truth that Steffi's forehand or backhand (which she did not have) is no match for Serena's all-round talent. Slavery lasted 400 years in the US because of people like you. When was the last time you heard about how Good Pete Sampras' forehand or backhand' was? Because he has been dethroned by the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafel Nadal. Nobody talks about the youngest Wimbledon Gradslam Champion Boris Becker because his talents are no match for those of Roger, Nadal and Djokovic who happen to be whites. You are comparing a champion like Steffi who played against sleepy players like Conchita Martinez, Arancha Sanchez Vicario etc, against a player who has won 23 grand slams and has won Olympic medals and serves better than some male tennis players. You would not be making this comparison if Serena was any other race except black. Serena will not apologize for her God-given Melanin and I will not apologize for mine. But you should be ashamed for still being so racist and short-sighted in 2019. I will not be bleaching my skin any time soon and Serena will not be bleaching hers.

The most important comment I can make 2 all of the Serena haters out there is even Graf, along with Chris & Martina have said Serena Williams is the Best female tennis player in History. Now, if Chris, Martina & Steffi have All said Serena is the Best then that's all I need 2 believe she is the Best. Steffi also said she believes Serena will tie & eventually pass her 22 majors record in the Open era. Those 3 legends should quiet all of the Serena haters but I'm sure Hate will keep their fire burning & good, cause as long as Serena keeps winning my fire 2 keep writing positive Serena comments will also continue.

In Cannes, France in 1926- Legendary tennis players Lenglen and Wills played an exhibition tornament, both made it to the final it was a match that was packed to capacity,Lenglen the veteran who had dominated the 20s and Wimbledon, her balletic movement and talent made her a superstar won in two tight sets beating newcomer Wills who would go on to rule the 30s,it would be the only time they played each other,it was clearly an example of an upcoming changing of the guards. I've thought of this match between Steffi and Serena as having that type of significance. It showed one Champion near the end and another at the beginning both playing a great match showing toughness and skill.

Nicklas4500 I kinda agree with you. Navratilova, winning a ton of titles in singles & doubles, was my original 1st pick as the best all around women's tennis player & since she had a 9 to 9 head to head record vs Steffi Graf, who is almost 13 yrs younger than her kinda says it all about Martina Navratilova, who really should be considered the GOAT of women's tennis. But that was before I saw Serena Williams. Now I don't think Martina Navratilova or Steffi Graf would have been able to consistently beat a healthy & fit Serena Williams but I do think Navratilova & Graf would have competed well vs Serena Williams. Overall after say 10-20 matches vs Serena Williams, I think Martina Navratilova & Steffi Graf would have won at least a third or maybe even close to half of their matches vs Serena. But in the end, with Serena's overall game, strength, athleticism & her great serve, I think a healthy/fit Serena Williams would've come out on top of both of her head to head matches vs Martina Navratilova & Steffi Graf, who I also consider to be 2 of the GOATs of women's tennis along with Serena Williams, Chris Evert & Margaret Court. But, of course, that's just my opinion.

Steffi Graf won her first title on the WTA tour in 1986. So 13 years before this finale in 1999. She had just returned to the tour in April 1998 after 10 months of not playing due to knee surgery (1997). Graf in 1999 was far from her peak form. I believe she was #7 in the world before the tournament of Indian Wells started. I want to remind everyone that Steffi wasn't ranked anymore when she returned to tennis in spring 1998. However, 1999 was a great year for Steffi. She was the most consistent GS tournament player: QF at the AO, she won the French Open and reached the final in Wimbledon. I am 100% certain that she could have reached the semis at the USO and would have taken over world #1 from Hingis or Davenport at that point. She was so close.

I never thought Graf could be this great. She comes from the previous era where power tennis hasn't evolved. But an experienced, full-of-techniques, and moving-so-well Graf can put up a good fight against a powerful, little-technique, inexperienced, raw-talent-with-instinct, Serena. Imagine Graf in today era, she would be right in the top 5 for sure.

It's very interesting to see how the greats handle their tough matches at the twilight of their careers vs at their height of their careers. I can see how the greats' weaknesses affect their matches. I wished Graf would have developed a more all around game. That's one of the reasons why Seles' tragedy was awful for everyone. Graf would have developed a stronger game as well as Seles, if Seles did not leave the game for two years. What a difference two years make! Williams is one of the greatest if not the greatest singles player so far. She has the all around game as well as her athletic ability. Hingis' lack of athletic ability really held her back in her tough matches. I have a new found appreciation for Navratilova's game. Her improvements and longevity have made her the greatest singles/doubles/and mixed doubles female player. If Williams didn't have her injuries or didn't have that ridiculous rule of only playing with her sister, she could have won more and be more consistent in her wins. "Williams is also one of only two players in the Open Era to have won each major three or more times." Most consecutive wins in grand slams singles titles is 2; so far, has never won any grand slam singles title 3 times in a row. Graf being the other player, is the only player to win each major at least 4 times. Williams is the strongest singles player when playing well, while Graf is the greatest consistent singles player? I can't wait for Serena to break Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam Singles victories. Serena's best chance might be Wimbeldon as the surface is softer, and is fast. Easier on the feet, yet fast to reward her for her big shots.

I think Navratilova is undoubtedly the greatest female tennis player ever if you go beyond just counting grand slams ... Firstly, her career singles titles far outstrips Graf by 167 to 107 (Serena only has 70+). Secondly she accumulated 18 singles slams despite also participating in the doubles events, often winning both ... in contrast, Graf and Serena mostly concerntrate on their singes event to avoid exhaustion. ... imagine how many singles Navra could have won if she had conserved her energy on it .. Thirdly, Navra had a very strong rival in Chris Evert who also got 18 slams ... in contrast, Graf's main rival Seles was cut short due to Seles's stabbing.. and Serena did not have any big rival able to consistently challenge for grand slams like herself ... As for Margaret Court's 24 slams, she greatly benefited from competing in the non-open era for more than half of her slam count ... in the non-open era, she only had to compete with the non-professional players as the ones who play full time tennis are barred from competing ... so basically her 24 slams should not even be a target for Serena to beat ... In all, Martina is the true goat among them ...

@@88feji No way is Martina the GOAT. Martina is in fact overrated if anything, and despite her being overrated almost nobody calls her the GOAT these days, with most picking Serena or Graf (probably more Serena at this point). People say all 4 slams werent fully valued then and that is why she has fewer slams, but in reality she is lucky for that since if all 4 slams were fully valued Evert would have about 24 slams and Navratilova only about 19, and Martina wouldn't even be seen as best in her own era anymore. Also if you take away Evert, Martina still has only 21 or 22 slams and now she has the biggest joke field in tennis history as the field in 82-87 outside of Evert being there was the biggest joke ever. Who would her biggest rival be now all those years she was winning almost all her slams- Shriver, LOL!!! And people make fun of Graf for having Sanchez as her biggest rival for a few years. So Martina is fucking lucky both that Evert was there, and also that all 4 slams weren't fully valued back then. Again Evert is the one really hurt by this, not Martina, yet overrated Martina is the one always given credit for it not underrated Chris. Without Martina, Chris has something like 28 slams, she was hurt far more by Martina than Martina by Chris. Her records at 3 of the 4 slams are significantly below all other major greats, only at Wimbledon is she ahead. And all players back then when won more tournaments so nobody cares about that. Every all time great, man or women back then, won over 150 tournaments. Even a non great like Wade won 105 singles tournaments. There were many tournaments with 2 or 3 rounds back then. Court has the most singles tournaments at 199, many more than Martina's 167 by the way. Lastly your saying Serena only concentrates on singles is pretty much a bullshit statement considering she has around 20 doubles/mixed doubles slams. Yes she plays less doubles than Martina, Court, and King, but considering doubles is seen as trivial these days she deserves credit for playing it and winning in it as much as she does. I guarantee you Martina would not be playing even half as much doubles if she were in her prime today instead of then either, although you are obviously a biased Martina fanboy so no doubt will deny that, but nearly everyone else would agree with me when they think about it. And Serena would probably play even more doubles and win even more at doubles if she didn't have the silly personal rule to only play with her sister as she feels it would be betraying her sister to play with someone else. She wouldn't even play doubles with her bff Wozniacki for that reason. Your assessment on Court is also off. The reason Court's slam record is degraded and most don't call her GOAT has nothing to do with the Open Era, it has to do with the Australian Open situation then. It was not well attended or viewed as a real slam and 11 of her 24 slams came there. There was no real womens pro tour so the best players were always in amateur, unlike the mens.

@@grantgoffin4774 U simply do not know anything about Tennis which is very much obvious from ur analysis. Are u a Martina hater or a homophobe?? First, answer this. Martina Navratilova is d greatest singles, doubles & mixed doubles player who has ever lived. She won 18 slams & an astounding 31 doubles & 10 mixed doubles slams & also 167 WTA tournaments ( highest by any one in d open era) . Her records speak for herself. No need of Ur biased, untrue & false narrative. Navratilova & Evert formed d greatest rivalry in d history of Womens' Tennis & everyone acknowledges it. Had Evert not been there she could have ended up with more than 24 slams. She had an astounding 59 slams altogether , 2nd only to Margaret Court ( 62 ). She had won a record 9 Wimbledon titles ( Wimbledon is known as d most prestigious among all Grand Slam Tournaments). Steffi Graf is perhaps d greatest Singles player but absence of Monica Seles who was her greatest rival made it a bit doubtful. So, Serena Williams is d best Singles player of all time but her main rival was her elder sister which also made it a bit clumsy as people say their father actually decides who would win. Nevertheless, she is a great champion. May be d GOAT ( singles). So, it is either Steffi or Serena at No1 or 2 of all time. But it is in singles . If u consider singles, doubles & mixed doubles altogether, Martina Navratilova is undoubtedly d greatest ever. Even d legendary Billi Jean King also stated d same. There is no denying of dat.Margaret Court does not come in d picture because she doesn't not fall completely in d open era, mainly in non-professional ( amateur) era. Chris Evert is d 4th greatest of all time. So, it has to be 1) Serena Williams 2) Steffi Graf 3) Martina Navratilova 4) Chris Evert. But, considering d all formats of Tennis i.e Singles, doubles & Mixed doubles it has to be only Martina Navratilova.

And you are trying to prove Navratilova fanboys are even worse than Selestials, which I never thought possible. And still using the tired line "anyone who does not consider Navratilova the GOAT is a homophobe." Yawn, that alone proves that you don't think Navratilova is the GOAT yourself, otherwise you would not resort to such a lame cop out. By your logic one could say anyone who thinks Serena isn't the GOAT is racist. I guess by your logic 99% of people must be homophobes since 99% of people think the GOAT is either Serena or Graf at this point, or someone other than Navratilova. Lastly if what you care about is most doubles, mixed, and singles titles combined Court is the GOAT. She has more singles titles than Navratilova, more singles slams than everyone, more combined singles/doubles/mixed slams than Martina despite that she retired at 33 and Martina at 55, she played 22 years longer and still couldn't catch her. So if that is what we are judging Court = GOAT, your hero Martina still loses. Good day, looking forward to seeing what your 201st username you make to agree with yourself is John David.

In maatches where Serena faced a slam champion, no.1, or player she has lost to before....she has shown up playing less than B+ in maybe 10% at most. Serena Williams is magnificently highly-skilled. And was so even as a champion tennis player as a child. And here, as a teenager, we see Serena's refreshingly innocent joy when she beats Steffi Graf. She skips like the innocent girl she is. Gotta love it!

This was a high quality match. Serena's talent shines through playing the great Steffi Graf. Serena earned this win against Graf. Reminds me a little of what Keys showed against Serena in the AO Semifinals. I wonder if in 10 years we will be looking back and comparing Keys body of work to Serena

a lot of (selected) Graf highlights here ; ) but Serena hits most (more of) of the winners in this match... like the winners from 9.45. I remember watching that match..

Graff the best player of all time. At the age of 30 made Serena work really hard to win that match. Serena only 18 and with a lot of power and athleticism.

What impress me is seeing them after such a tough battle shaking hands, kissing and smiling in the end. Something absolutely impossible to see in this era.

Two greatest champions in my book. Stats wise Graf still has the edge, but in terms of passion, atheletism and talent Serena is miles ahead. History will be more favorable to Serena as GOAT!

@Illya Kuryakin, oh really? Lol you are hoping she is not mentioned in 50 years time. The stats tell a different story. Many people of the generation have already forgotten Steffi Graf. Poor you!

+Illya Kuryakin In terms of endorsements...Li Na, LMAO As for Facebook, Graf currently has about 500,OOO...Serena hasn't retired yet and well, you guessed it LMAO. We get that you don't like Serena, but stop making stuff up!

***** Why bring up Graf's endorsements and Facebook followers to begin with. Her endorsements pale in comparison to Li Na's and so does her Facebook followers in comparison to Serena. No one cares about that anyway. It seems like your grasping at straws and it has nothing to do with the basic fact that Serena is way better than Graf.

@IIya Kuraykin, so by your reasoning she shouldn't lose to anyone? Like Graf never lost to mediocre players in her time? Serena lost 4 matches this year out of how many played? You have the logic of a 5 year old. BTW Muguruza is now ranked #4...you make no sense.
