One of the best matches I've ever seen. Been a fan of Dementieva and Serena ever since, this level of tennis is rarely seen on the WTA these days. Dementieva was one of the few who could really challenge the big names (Venus, Serena, Justine, Kim, Mauresmo,...) too bad she was too inconsistent, otherwise she could've definitely won a Slam.

Elena Dementieva is the first tennis player who made me fall in love with this sport. In addition, the first tennis match I watched between Dementieva vs Safina, OG 2008. I miss that moment

Unfortunately, he is right. Because all of Williams siblings were a lot older and thicker[No offence, but Venus is the only taller and a bit slender than the rest of the sisters and the trophy wife is the same one whom Richard now accused as a fraudster. Look up its all there on the internet

I miss Dementieva...She was amazing on the courts, BUT I love my girl Serena!!!!!

I fell asleep as soon as this match started, I stayed up through the morning so I wouldn't wake up late to watch it. then boom I fall asleep, wake up to the words "Absolute Classic!" literally right when the match was over. 9 years later I still regret not watching it live. I cant sleep some nights knowing that I missed this match, some times I get hives thinking about it. I have tremors at night over it. Sometimes when my friends invite me to chic-fil-a I cant eat because I know deep down inside I missed this match. Im seeking help but no one understands my pain.

If demetieva wouldn’t have retired , she would’ve won 6-7 slams by now. I’m sure she’s way better than the likes of muguruza Stephens Halep and wozniacki

Dementieva didn't have Big match mentality. She lost her 2 GS finals to Myskina and Kuznetsova, both winnable matches for her. She won Olympic Gold against a bigger nervous player Safina. Dementieva could play pretty well until qf/SF in majors but crossing that was a big ask. Similar to Safina or Sabatini (who managed one slam)

Had Dementieva continued playing till 2014-15 she might have got a slam. Will never know but I do miss her.

Elena was a supremely talented player - it's unfortunate that her serve was such a liability. Graceful and polite, she was liked and respected by all the players. She deserved a slam title...

I can't believe they didn't put the best point of that match in! Where Serena holds for 6-6!

If I had a mom like Dementieva who every time looked at her daughter with such doubt almost crying expression, I 'd feel doubtful too. In fact Dementieva would look up at her box and yell...I believe she was yelling at her mom who showed no confidence in her daughter. Dementieva was one of the all time greats. The crowd believed it, but her mom's facial expressions or even just a fist pump would 've made a difference. Serena & Dementieva brought out the best in each other. Azarenka reminds of Dementieva- what fighters!

Roland Garros semifinal vs Schiavone, i think that was her bigger posibility of taking a grabd slam, she couldn't end the match and said during a interview losing Roland Garros and not play Wimbledon was very sad, she had three big losses during a year.

@ Janice 100 percent. I have never watched this final yet I find this boring and not entertaining enough but I can see it was a tough final both players were striking the ball smoothly and rising to their peak at 27

She's certainly in the top group but it would be hard to put her above Safina, Zvonareva and Radwanska, especially as her 2 finals were very winnable matches and she didn't show up for either of them.

I miss Elena Dementieva :(. I always thought she was one of the nicer WTA players during her time. Great groundstrokes and footwork. Alas, that dismal serve cost her a lot of important points. If only she delayed her retirement for 2 or 3 yrs, I bet she could've grabbed a GS or two. I think she is the best player to not have won a grand slam.

No, she wouldn’t have won a Slam in 2011-2013. She was already in decline in 2010 and Serena was in her best form during those years and Sharapova/Azarenka are a terrible match-up for her.

This was an awesome match! In my humble opinion, Elena had the best groundstroke game of her era. Her downfall was most definitely her poor serve. Remove the serve, and she would have undoubtedly won multiple slams. At least she has an Olympic gold metal to show for her career efforts. I was never a fan, but I always found myself uneasy when Serena or Venus faced Elena Dementieva! Great player indeed!

I think this is the best women's match ever played; both gave their absolute all. I'm not sure how they walked off court.

She maxed out on her potential and did amazingly well for a mentally frail player with a terrible serve. She had plenty of other holes in her game like the fact that she was very predictable with her cross-court patterns and lacked variety and spin. She was able to stay competitive due to her amazing athleticism and she was a fighter, but realistically she was never a top 3 contender at any Slam she ever played.

This 13:47 is the point that we regret for the rest of our lives. If only it was a backhand down the line ....
