These girls were starting to come alive in 1999...they were taking top players out...Serena had just taken out Hingis and now Venus took out the Queen (back then) Steffi....these girls went on to shake the WTA in a way to where players had to revisit their training techniques and change their game to keep up with these sisters from 2000. LEGENDS...they will go down as the baddest sister act to ever grace the WTA...forever my #1 and #2!!!! So proud of Venus and Serena...

Venus is just too good here! She hits with so much authority and this is a prime example of why anyone who thinks Graf would be whipping player's of today's era is delusional. A disease took Venus out of the hunt but clear to see here she was so very great. Her net game so superior she's bossing Graf around the court. Not easy to do. Venus was greater than Serena too bad disease conquered her game. Venus=badass! Bossing all contenders. Venus was the bomb. I miss her game the way it was.

@Illya Kuryakin Steffi, roger have just as much as swagger...just because they are more subdued doesn't mean they don't think they are the best. You don't really reach their status without thinking/knowing you are better than everyone else. Also did you basically just say you only like venus because she loses more? lol.

  • @ajollypanda4175

    @ajollypanda4175

Illya Kuryakin No I am saying their kind of swagger comes from knowing they are great. Also don’t switch up what you said, your comment implies you hate people with swagger and you like when they lose. Then you make the analogy of venus losing and how you want the same for serena. Theres nothing disrespectful venus is doing but being fired up and a short celebration after beating one of the greats. You’re just bothered by her winning.

I don’t know if you’ve been following The Williams sisters very closely 🤔. If you have you will also know that the reason why Venus’s form dipped very low was because she developed ‘Sjogren’s Syndrome’ which is a debilitating chronic illness without cure! This affects joints and muscles and makes the sufferer persistently fatigue all the time. Sometimes she never got out of bed let alone be able to train/practice so her form dipped far below Serena’s. Venus had a change of diet and lifestyle to help her live with this condition better. But there is no cure so It has greatly affected her Tennis for the past 12 years 8:16

I saw the whole match live in 1999. Steffi Graf was so dominated the whole match, it all depended on Venus´s errors for Graf to score points. As you can see in the highlight the point Graf won at 4:45 was only one point where Graf suddenly attacked and won. She tried 2 more times but lost those points.

This is one typical example that marked the emergence of the Williams Sisters who vastly improved on Graf’s power and speed game and raised the bar of Women’s Tennis to a different stratosphere which is still unmatched. The power on both wings, the power and speed of the serve, standing way inside the baseline to receive serve, intimidating return of serve, turning defence into ferocious attack, The Williams signature’Drive Volleys’ which they created and their own brand of approaching the net when they need to. Graf was considered unbeatable at her best then came the Williamses ☝🏾🙏🏾💫⚡️☄️💎👑👑

So many people are stuck in their own negativity, Graf to be fair had a winning record over Venus and an even record over Serena. All three are great champions. She was at least 10 years older than either of them. So if your argument is that the sisters weren't even in their prime yet then how about that Graf was out of her prime when she beat them. I believe that if they were all in the same generations that the matches would have been spectacular and likely all three would be beating each other on a regular basis.

All the hate against Graf is ridiculous. Serena, Navratalova and Graf are all basically interchangeable as GOAT. They always will be. It all comes down to people's personal pref which has NOTHING to do with 'facts' but their emotional response to the players. Each player took the sport to the next level and has on their resume achievements that can't be replicated. Serena is underrated atm but that is because there is no new 'graf/serena/martina' threatening her crown and making us apreciate her

Unfortunately, this Venus Williams doesn't exist anymore. I actually haven't seen Venus Williams move this well & play this brand of tennis in a Long Time. The last 10 years or so, Venus Williams hits the ball less aggressive, more defensive, moves around the court less explosive & Venus just doesn't have the killer instinct anymore like she did in this match & her other match vs Steffi Graf in Hannover '99. Yes, I understand Venus Williams has been dealing with her fatigue zapping, autoimmune disease the last 10 years but her disease is also zapping her aggressive mentality & killer instinct. It's the reason why Venus Williams hasn't won a Grand Slam title since 2008. Venus hasn't even won a regular title since 2015 or 2016. I really miss this Venus Williams. She was an amazing athlete before her autoimmune disease.

That's great....once again you give Graf credit for quantity over quality...and ignore the fact that at least some of her quantity was handed to her (being made to work LITTLE due to after-effect of Seles' stabbing). Most agree that Serena's quality is in a league of her own. Just read an article today that stated that an Olympic Gold in a few weeks time would solidify Serena's place as no. 2 all-time...even ahead of Evert and Navratilova.

all i can say is that on this match a very young V crushed the still young and in prime Graf. This showed the world that Graf really wasnt the gr8est ever she just had not come up against the real great players who could expose her weakness's: the main 1 being her back hand. V n l8r Serena made sure to make her run around her back hand which opened up the court for V to hit a winner up the line...Graf got away w/ it b4 b/c aside from Seles her other contemporaries also had horrible backhands.

Yeah 2000 was the most dominant ever Venus and still could only win tournaments (not just slams) for a 3 month stretch, and had losses to Coetzer, Dokic, and an old Sanchez Vicario. To win U.S Open and Olympic Gold lost sets to 30 year old Tauziat, old Sanchez, post stabbing Seles, was points from losing to Hingis, and to win Wimbledon barely survived grass court legend Hingis in the quarters, lol! Yep womens tennis has never seen a display like peak Venus.

No doubt.....where is there to aim on the court?....please tell me LOL Unfortunately it has never really happened for a huge stretch of time (like the greats before them), but we've seen what they can do injury-free and match tough...it is throughout history unmatched. Simply put...at their very best, they make their weaknesses look non-existent.

Any Graf interviews out there where she talks about the new generation (i.e. hingis, williamses, kournikova?) Yes, age and injury were slowing her down a bit but she also had to know the game was changing and there was no was she dominates like she did in 93-95 with the rise of the new kids. i do recall she ended a 99Wimby match w/Clijsters and told her she was playing "tennis of the future."

It was clear that Venus can overpower even Graf. Evert, Navratilova, and Graf (and even Seles) would not have won as much if the sisters were around during their time I think. Venus and Serena would have blown them off the court.

Venus and Serena had a post-2000 game when they came on the scene....little did we know that this same game would translate into the NEXT decade as well. That's all I'm trying to say...obviously Venus and Serena's careers do not even come close to the few names ahead of them on "the list" haha, but they would still beat them all at their peak abilities.

She had 9 clay court titles, frezkazoid! Despite no FO, that's still twice the clay court titles Serena has. It makes no sense using one sister against the other, for most people with SENSE realize that as far as other players are concerned, THEY STOPPED EACH OTHER! How many times have they had to cancel each other out to win titles? Graf didn't have that...in FACT, the only legends who had anything CLOSE were Evert & Navratilova. They are practically the same age, and came up together!

@gabe228 I totally agree...you have to take away the OFFENSIVENESS of her slice! As soon as you force her into all defensive slice, she's in trouble....the thing is that in her day, those women could not do that...not enough power to force her to hit her slice off the back foot, or more importantly, with very little time to execute that extra signature bite that her slice has on it more often than not.

@Hoffenheim08 are you in love with her ???... steffi became a professionnal tennis player in 1983, she was 14... players didn't hit the ball as hard as villiams did at the end of the 90's or now. So i wanted to say for a veteran like steffi in Miami 99, her classic game wasn't as strong as it was by this time, on hardcourt. You're totally right steffi did beat venus in WImbledon QF this year, her slice was just amazing on grasscourt, but not especially on hardcourt. Have a good day !!!

So where have you been the last several years where Serena has clearly grown in the humility department? How many players, especially greats ones, started out so humble?....and more importantly, how many showed such humility every single time they played, win or lose? I think you'll find that list quite small...if there is a list at all.

  • @QuadThreat85

Basically all you did was state that Graf was fucking up...probably due to Venus playing almost flawlessly (ummm 4 errors)? Venus will never lose a tennis match if she's making that few mistakes...the same can be said for Steffi obviously, but Venus came out knowing what to expect...she had already lost to Steffi a couple of years before this and was determined to let everyone know that she had what it took to beat her.

What people are forgetting when Graf did beat Williams sister it was always close and they weren't at there full potential yet. There's no doubt in my mind Serena is the greatest of all times. Think about it name some of the people Graf beat in Grand Slams the last five years of her career. My point exactly, Serena's competition is far more difficult than Graf! Hell Justin Henin could've taken at least 4 of those GS! Hell not to mention Azarenka

***** You have No respect for Kimiko Date. Obviously, if she could come back & compete at a high level against girls 10-15 years her junior, Date was a great athlete. And she won a few matches against younger, higher ranked women but she wasn't or isn't winning many tournaments or Grand Slams for that matter. So, you continually bringing up the fact that some younger, higher ranked players were beaten by the 40 yr old Kimiko Date, means Nothing. It tells me Kimiko Date was & IS a great athlete & tennis player. If Kimiko wasn't So in Love back in the mid '90's when she first retired, she might have been the first Asian female player to make history. I'm sure her culture & family also had a lot 2 do with Kimiko Date retiring at 25 yrs young.

***** No, 40 yr old Graf, Sabatini, Novotna or Sanchez can not beat today's players and you wanna know why....because they don't want 2 compete anymore. Now, maybe if they wanted 2 play a 9-11 month tour, sure they could win a few matches or beat 11 players & win a few sets against today's players but the fact remains Kimiko Date never won a major when she was in her twenties or when she came back in her late 30's. So, Again, WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR STUPID POINT ALREADY?!? Give it a rest already. Stop your ugly madness already. Serena Williams IS & WAS A great player! Serena is number 1 in the world & has been the BEST PLAYER in the world for the past 3 years. (Yes, I said the past 3 even though she was ranked 1 the past 2 years. Serena is human & she's made a few mistakes in her personal & professional lives. Steffi Graf is also a great player & if she came back & committed 2 playing in the pro tour again in her 40's, she might be ranked in the top 10 again. Would she win a major or 2, maybe but I don't think she really would. But again, what are we talking about? Why are you trying 2 discredit Serena Williams & all her accomplishments? Don't you have enough in your life 2 focus on? Why are you so eager 2 disrespect what Serena Williams has worked all her life 2 achieve? The only reason I'm wasting my time replying 2 your ignorant comments is because I'm tired of people like yourself who keep pushing your negative agenda on KZread. I can't remember when I posted a comment about a famous person I didn't like or approve of. If I don't like them then I usually don't say anything or write any comment. What for? I like Serena Williams. I'm happy for all of her success on the tennis court. So, I post my comments but when I read ugly, stupid, racist comments from people who obviously don't like her, I don't understand. Go post positive, loving comments on one of Steffi Graf's videos. Leave the negativity in the streets or in your home. Don't spread your negative crap all over KZread. There's no need for it. If you don't like Serena Williams, ok but we do. Spread love not war. lol.

But to try and suggest that Serena was close to her best in 99, to strengthen an argument that peak Graf > peak Serena is just desperately grasping for invisible straws. Try again!

And Serena's OBVIOUS greater competition. Who was Graf's greatest competitor? You' can;t say Navratilova because their careers of playing their best did not overlap enough. She only gets credit for a few years...3 at most. So it's basically Seles. And that was for only barely 3 years as well. One of these years she had both of them (1990 I think). That's it! Venus, Clijsters, Henin, Davenport, Sharapova, Azarenka. All WORTHY grand slam champions who have been in Serena's way.

I was far more impressed by Serena's performance vs Graf in Indian Wells than this. Since while Serena barely beat Graf and Venus won easily here, Graf was playing real crappy tennis in this match, I think she had over 50 unforced errors to only 16 for Venus, while in Indian Wells Graf was actualy playing really good tennis and Serena still beat her.

This is the only one of their 5 meetings Venus won in straight sets. The other 4 she lost 3 times, and won once by breaking near the end of the 3rd set. All but 1 of the matches in 1999 too. So if your basis is their normal outcome this match was an anamoly in that. Anyway I am not judging by the result but the actual match. Graf did play crappy and had over double the unforced errors of Venus, which is quite unbelievably given that the Williams sisters are the queen of unforced errors. Contrast that to Indian wells when Graf was playing extremely well, over three times better than she was here, and Serena still beat her, which is far more impressive than beating a super poor Graf in straight sets.

What are Venus's excuses for her 3 losses to Steffi (the 96 was age I could agree, but what about the other 2 this year). Your point is pointless. The fact is YOU are the one who referenced their other matches, not me, and I pointed in their other meetings Steffi either won or lost a very tight 3 setter in the one other loss, so that was a very poor reference. If you want to explain why Steffi played well in this match, you will have to do a fuck of a lot better than that.

Mits Vilander said it as well.. It's not just "us commoners" who believe in Serena. Some of the experts do to. And I can;t wait for Serena to show up ripping a new one in all the records (especially the ones concerning 30+ players). Serena will almost single-handedly (with Federer a little as well) turn the tide of tennis to inspire players to develop later and play MUCH longer than what was once considered the end. Like she looks like a 31 year old out there...not even CLOSE.

I agree with everything...don't get me wrong. It was never meant to belittle anyone, but most Graf fans refuse to put Serena up there with them, and it's not fair. There are many things in this game that allow Serena to stand alone (just like the other greats), and people continuously write off her achievements as if she doesn't matter. P.S. the next one of "them" probably won't come for a few more years...the transitions of the game were ruined when Graf retired early and Seles got stabbed.
