Sengoku Basara : Musou Game Retrospective Part 2

Ойындар

I'm back with the next Musou game I wanted to discuss as part of this series. This game happens to be part of a series I'm unbelievably passionate about and it's in a way, a remake of my very first attempt at making a "video essay" style video back in like 2017-2018. (it's awful and will never see the light of day again) In this video I discuss the first Sengoku Basara game and how it compares to not only it's own english localization in Devil Kings but also how it compares to Koei's Samurai warriors released only 15 months prior. This project has been a huge labor of love and I appreciate everyone and anyone's support.

I'd like to think of Basara as a "What if the Sengoku-Jidai took place in the Devil May Cry universe?" kinda vibes. I mean, Devil Kings is a thing... Like it or not lol. Especially with the later titles, particularly 4 and Sumeragi, with the improved gameplay system. Also added the fact that most of the moves originated from DMC and vice versa. It's because of these things and more is why I prefer this over the Musou games. I really hope that Capcom does not abandon this series especially in the West, where little to no marketing was done to promote Samurai Heroes back then... Capcom must not let Devil Kings give them PTSD!

@Giritto Big oof man. I didn't even know they did a pachinko machine. Well, I guess I'll just have to live with it and hope that within a decade, Capcom decides to revive the series again with a devoted dev team like with SF6. Also doesn't help that Ryota Suzuki now works at Square Enix, since he was also the combat director for the Basara games, if I recall correctly? Do correct me if I'm wrong on this one. But yeah, suck so bad that Basara has fallen into obscurity. Especially now that the Musou games have been shown lacking, and is in need of a rival now more than ever.

Very cool! I've been really interested in the musou genre for a while and I'm glad I found someone doing the sort of deep dive I'd want. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

I like how Masamune’s art attack names are all in English whereas everyone else’s are all in Japanese. They sound pretty cool too, like I love JET-X (especially compared to the boring ass US name, cross blades).

Heyyy, Interesting to rediscover your channel again after your original retrsopective series which was... something, but was still enjoyable based on memory. I think what my caught my attention here was the brief "review/thoughts" on the original samurai warriors, as someone a fan "musou" or arena brawler, I don't think you were entirely being fair when it comes to original SW, for one I think both games have different goals and aims and while one obviously inspired the other, it doesn't exactly mean they attempt to copy each other gameplay or tone directly, I think SW specially wants to be more historically authentic in terms of tone and many characterization of the roster compared to basara which pushed itself more towards a toku esque direction as you mentioned, SW is more concerned to explore the characters background and motivations for why they participate in this conflict, specially when many of the characters end in tragic note (atleast towards historical routes), the tone much more grim than basara1 which rarely has moments of laviety, so approaching them with idea that they're both trying to be riddiculas, I won't comment on visuals since that entirely subjective but I feel like SW1 more dark and dirt colors compared to basara is good enough indicator that one's clearly taking itself more serious, so approaching both as riddiculas, crazy action games isn't accurate imo Gameplay wise, I do at some extent agree that basara 1 might have had the BEST combat around it's time although combat isn't everything in gameplay and I feel basara 1 specially suffers from that, while SW combat is more basic, the gameplay shines more it's attempt to *simulate wars aspects* while basara 1 might have flexible AI stages in each playthrough, the stages still play the same and end the same regardless with the similar mandatory objectives to progress and the eventual boss encounter, SW1 is opposite, having fixed stages but more flexible AI and battles, stages won't exactly end the alwaysnsame, in one battle you might end up eliminating the commander earlier than intended or you could wipe entire wipe without care for your allies morale or you could follow the historical objectives and let the battles play out close to history, you are given more options compared to basara fun but very linear progression compared to SW flexible approach Apologize for long tanget, I needed to get it out of chest for bit, that being said, I'm liking this new format, interesting to see what's coming later, despite disgreeing on certain points and conclusions, I was still entertained :^)

I got into the Sengoku Basara games with SB3 after watching the anime, and I've never played the earlier games, so it was nice to learn about the very first one with this video (and to see things like Kasuga meeting Kenshin for the first time, which I'd never seen since it wasn't shown in the anime). I don't think I could get into the earlier games now after spending hundreds of hours on SB4 Sumeragi, the gameplay of the PS2 games would probably feel too rudimentary in comparison. In any case, it's nice to see someone covering this rather niche series on youtube so I've subscribed and look forward to your videos on the rest of the series.

I'll have to give a hard disagree on the music for samurai warriors as far as most warriors fans are concerned it's easily recognizable for battles that even people that get in the later games. The setting is colorless is due to the fact the devs wanted the game to have a darker setting which i can say the same for basara 1 even before its devil kings counterpart. And I say that as one who likes both. Only thing this wouldn't apply is sengoku basara 3 some battles and tracks are easily recognizable

Great video. I'm also a fan of basara franchise and basara deserve a better chance in the west in the future. Do you planning on doing this kind of video in the future again??

Not sure I'd classify Sengoku Basara as a Musou game, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable series

It has the same map, similar combos, generals are the real difficulty, and even similar pings. What would you classify it as?

So I'm more so watching this because of Flashing Blades recommending the vids, because I did bring up Musou games during one stream, and yes, I'm only now commenting, but still, I did enjoy the video, I think you carried yourself well, I think you explained why you liked the game well, and I do want to check out the other videos. But there is one thing that didn't sit quite right with me, the Samurai Warriors comparison segment, you say you think the game is not bad, but you say almost nothing good about it, you say the gameplay is simpler, and not as satisfying as Bassara, you say stages are open but bland and colorless and lacking in detail, you don't like how there's only 5 characters to start with until you get more, unlike Bassara's 12, you say the music is inferior and doesn't fit the tone or setting, and finally you say the character designs are good but not inspired compared to Bassara, almost everything you say is negative and worse than the game you like, basically just sending the message of "This game is worse than Bassara in almost every way but I don't hate it guys I swear" it just feels like you said it's a decent game just to keep angry comments out, it doesn't really sound like you cared about being objective like you said beforehand, and I agree with a comment that said, "It feels more like a apples to oranges comparison" with that segment. Edit: And also, about the song being cut in the English version, there's also the fact the licensing isn't an easy thing to do, why do you think the Japanese openings for various Mega Man games aren't in the English versions even after the Legacy Collections came out?

In the Japanese dub of Sengoku Basara, Uesugi Kenshin is voiced by Romi Park and Kenshin moves effeminately because it is said that the Dragon of Echigo is a woman.
