It's crazy how they try to remove as much Japanese-ness from a game that's about Japanese history. I'm surprised they didn't do a complete overhaul and change the Samurais into European knights or something. Or cowboys.

Man this takes me back. I picked Devil Kings up back in the day, because I was obsessed with Dynasty / Samurai Warriors and was looking for more games like those. Never got into Sengoku Basara like I got into Koei's musou games, but hey these games are still fun to play from time to time. Weird though that Capcom thought it necessary to strip the game of everything japanese, considering that Koei had at point been publishing games that dealt heavily with japanese, chinese and mongolian history since the 80s and they never seemed to do okay with finding an audience for these games in the west.
Dude, I had this game as a kid! It was my childhood. Actually.... I had Sengoku Basara 2 (wich is probably the sequel to this game, wich didn't get localized like this one), but it was all in Japanese, so just imagine me as a child trying to figure out all of the menus and stuff (well, I had to do this with every game, since I'm Brazilian and all the games were in English at the time, BUT STILL)

You can thank Capcom USA for screwing that up for everyone...
I just realized that the whole cast is just full of Canadian VA's/Ocean Dub stars, because if you know Death Note's dub cast, Inuyasha's, X-Men: Evolution, hell, MLP FIM, you'll recognize every strictly based Canadian actor, cause there all here lol (The last console game released was in 2016, but the last game was a mobile title in 2019, with updates to this day.)
As someone who deeply studied the Sengoku period, thes games are amazing and we need more of them
"He's the least intimidating guy I've ever seen" he says Wait till Ieyasu starts popping them steroids, looking like Japanese Chris Redfield from Basara 3 onwards And you totally should play the newer games. Basara 4 Sumeragi has the most characters and the most refined mechanics! (There's a newer game but it's way more linear and not very interesting if you don't care about the story) In Japanese, but it's not hard to understand. The gameplay actually has cancels and juggles, etc. Every character feels unique and has tons of moves.

Since you asked for a Sengoku Basara sequel recommendation. Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi is really fun, though that would be a japanese import but gosh, seeing this for the first time just shows how long of a way the game has come. If you wanted something that was localized though and done properly, Sengoku Basara Heroes for PS3 and Wii is very awesome. There's some awesome special moves you get every 5 level ups, you have aerial raves, co-op, and it's just really polished itself from the previous two games feeling closer to that mixture of light Devil May Cry and Warriors combat.
This game gives me nostalgia, thank you for playing it
Having a blue samurai using 3 sword in each hands and doing actually good damage I love sengoku basara man
Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes for PS3 was waaaay better.
Are Japanese companies not aware of each other? Koei was perfectly fine in keeping all original names in Dynasty and Samurai Warriors so it struck me odd that both Capcom and Sega (for Yakuza Kenzan and Ishin) thought Western audiences would have no idea what was going on with their Sengoku inspired games.

I guess they wanted the game to sell to a big market rather a niche one.
“I don’t wanna play as devil king he’s kinda boring” *proceeds to pick Yukimura* any credibility you could have had is now out of the window
Besides this game, only Sengoku Basara 3 (PS3/Wii) was localized. It was released with the name Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes and was a pretty decent localization. It didn't sell that well in the states so the other games in the series never got localized. After that, there was Sengoku Basara 4 and it's expansion, Sengoku Basara X (a 2D fighting game, and a spin-off focusing on Yukimura (Scorpio in Devil Kings) The gameplay hasn't changed much throughout the series so SB3 is probably a good choice to try out since it was translated into English. SB2 seems to be the fan favorite since it had the biggest roster of playable characters but its only available in Japanese. It's been a few years since they're made a new Sengoku Basara game but the IP isn't totally forgotten since it got a mobile game last year.
Ah yes localization that killed Basara's chances to have a successful debut in the West. I am forever bitter towards the decisions towards making "Devil Kings"
Localization issues aside, I didn't even know about Sengoku Basara as a kid, and the gameplay is very addictive (also had never played a "Dynasty-like" before). Bought this game used off Amazon as an adult, and honestly the gameplay itself still holds up to me.
I remember playing the living shit out of this game as a little man, and being so disappointed you couldn't play as Reaper. He was the edgiest of lords with the two scythes and the spikey shoulders.
Remember, Samurai Warriors has the better games and Sengoku Basara has the better anime. It’s kind of like Yoda’s whole “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering” talk

eh matter of taste. Basara has been a completely different beast since they thoroughly refined the combat starting from Basara 3, enough for me to see Basara to be the series with better games since then
Last time I was this early Matt was still in high school asking them if they were ready.
I wish he played a few more stages. I would have loved him to comment on the historically accurate knights, demons, vikings and Egyptian tomb soldiers that were fighting in 16th century Japan.
ohh God, the memories. I always love dynasty warriors franchise but so is a good change of pace. played a shit ton of it back in the days, then capcom never released the English version for its subsequent sequels... I feel betrayed to be honest
I hated and loved this game, I loved the gameplay but I could tell something was up with the localization so when I looked it up, I hated they changed this, I guess Capcom thought we would like gimped mechanics, less characters and stupid names. Although we did get Sengoku Basra 3 on PS3, which I loved. Also got the imports of SB 3 Utage, HD collection and 4.
Still sucks the series went into indefinite hiatus after Yukimura-den and only had a highschool AU anime and a mobile game after, and that only the 3rd game got a proper translation. Shame there was never an English translation of the HD collection or Sengoku Basara 4.
Pity Capcom just doesn't give a shit about Sengoku Basara cause 4 is one of the coolest Musou style games ever.
12:26 This is the face of a guy that's going to wear a hood and punch people really hard in the third game.
great video, i used to play this game a lot with friends in between dynasty and samurai warriors... yes i was that kid. i can highly recommend trying to pick up either sengoku basara samurai heroes for ps3 if want the best localized sengoku basara game. Or if you want the most recent and arguably best game in the series you should get sengoku basara 4 sumeragi for ps4, it's japanese only but it's got hella fun combat and bonkers mechanics and stages, and a bunch of characters
the editing reminds me of the old days. that’s my favorite. like the old brawls.
I used to love this game, and still do
Hilarious review!
Deadrising chop til you drop would be a perfect Matt McMuscles game. They basically had to lower the zombie count 90% to make it work on the Wii lol
You should try SB3 or 4. You can pull off hype combos there.
Devil Kings looks very questionable with the anime sequence
I got sengoku basara 3 for the wii for 99p, and it was fucking fantastic. I really hope the series returns to the West.
Oh Yeah I remember this game VERY fondly
I loved this game!!!
I actually really enjoyed this game way back when, great to see it again. Also all this criticism hits hard because it isn't exactly wrong lol
This would've made a great episode of What Happun? Cuz i would have LOVED to know what exactly the fuck happened to it's localization back in the day!
PUT YA GUNS ON!
truth be told I really, really loved Devil Kings priming system and just the second attack button in general, and wish later games would bring it back so Date could have his lightning strikes and Yukimaru could have his kick combo back
Basara only happens in Japan now. Last game was in 2016.
The latest Sengoku Basara games are on PS4, actually, 4 (and Sumeragi, its expansion) and then another one that focuses on Yukimura and Date, forgot its name but that's the latest as of now.
Sengoku Basara on Ps3 is such a fun game. I'm sad we never got more.
Still watching but, Tekken 5 ? Yes please my good sir.
I never played Devil Kings because of he XPlay review many series ago. I did get Sengoku Basara 3 Samurai Heroes, and I actually liked it. Every map is very different with various twists like a racing game in one, and a stealth level. While characters do make standard "button mash" attacks their special attacks are very differently almost like a Fighting Game. Magoichi Saika is a gunslinging woman with a hand cannon, shotgun, assault rifle, rocket launcher, TNT, and can call in air strikes during 1500AD. Capcom did incorporate Devil May Cry style special moves to keep characters different from each other, so its like every character has a different Devil Arms. Its a shame that there is only 1 genuine port of the series in North America. From why I played in SB3, its an awesome series. Looking at this Devil Kings footage, it all looks like a Dynasty/Samurai Warriors clone. I cannot tell if thats because of the Devil Kings alterations if if Sengoku Basara 1 really plays like that.
Mr Matt I think your my spirit animal
matt i think some matches maybe arcade runs of ur fav fighting games would be a great idea
There a decent amount of Sengoku Basara games actually. Devil Kings is SB 1 but there are four mainline game in the series. The PS3/Wii game you mentioned is SB3. In the west it is called Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes and its a fantastic game. Sadly no other Basara game has been brought to the west since that game which is a shame since SB4 is amazing. And Capcom recently announced a new Sengoku Basara project for its 15th anniversary.
I remember playing this when Dynasty warriors was kinda slowing down. I thought this was fun, too bad they never brought the rest.
Don't pursue Lu... oh, never mind...
Sengoku Basara 3 kicks ass.
You gotta play samurai heroes on this channel, great ps3 game, and it’s what got me into sengoku basara like 10 years ago
Tekken 5 YES
There are Sengoku BASARA 4 & its expansion (4 Sumeragi) for PS3 & PS4 after the Wii games (Sengoku BASARA 3/Samurai Heroes for US), and their gameplay is a lot better - think Devil May Cry as musou game lol.
Ah, Sengoku Basara, the series (specifically the third game for the Wii) that got me hooked on the musou genre. While I mostly play the likes of Dynasty and Samurai Warriors, I always love how Sengoku Basara embraced the over the top tone unlike the Koei games that just kept things straight.
This game was easy to make fun of but as a child back then i genuinely having fun. (of course it's fun after you understand the mechanic )
unrelated to this video but you should play Speed Kings for the gamecube. Rly fun over the top motorcycle racing action!
Capcom does still make the games but only one other game (sengoku basara 3) has ever come to the west, localized as "Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes" for the wii. I would say the best game in the series at the moment is Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi for the playstation 3. It's a blast to play even in Japanese. Also you NEED to look at the DLC for Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi, it's incredible. The series has been on hiatus since the most recent game, Yukimuraden, flopped HARD. Also watch the anime.
I actually played the heck out of that PS3 game: Great (dumb) fun. And yeah, they need to rerelease “Basara X”, like, yesterday. Also; ..Yeah, Tekken!!
I remember picking this up because I loved Dynasty/Samurai Warriors. I thought it was an even more over the top version of those. Fast forward a few years and Koei would eventually make all the Warriors games just as goofy as Devil Kings.
ARE YOU READY GUYYYS? PUT YA GUNS ON!!!
Yes do Tekken 5!
I remember having a lot of fun with this when I borrowed it from a friend years ago. Dumb game, but it's dumb fun.
I hope Matt sees this: As a Sengoku BASARA and overall Dynasty Warriors fan in general, I know almost all of what happened to these games and can help lead along anybody that wants to know in case Matt doesn't do a Wha Happun on the game/series. Devil Kings is absolutely a WH attempt to localize the BASARA series that was created entirely as a Take That of sorts to Koei because they took the Sengoku era first and Capcom was somewhat salty. As you can tell, the game wasn't...the best... Because of the massive failure of Devil Kings (Sengoku BASARA 1) partly in fact cause they didn't even advertise it, they decided to not even attempt to localize the second game and kept it in Japan. The third game was eventually released and this time, remembering their mistake of not advertising the game, actually went and advertised the third title, Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes. Where did they advertise, you might ask? Well I found an ad for it on the sidebars of NINJAKIWI AS I WAS PLAYING BLOONS TOWER DEFENSE IN HIGH SCHOOL. When I first saw it I thought to myself "Ooh this looks like a Samurai Warriors ripoff, I might have to try this." On top of all of this, Capcom forced a crunch to make sure that the game released as "advertised", so they had to cut a lot of content out of it, including a handful of stages and like, eleven playable characters. The final product: a 2010 Sengoku BASARA game, that's supposed to be a Warriors/Musou equivalent, with *SIXTEEN* playable characters - and you only start with six of them! The rest you unlock by completing specific characters' stories, and unlocking Nobunaga is a fucking task and a half in itself. Not quite as much of a Wha Happun-y tale as Devil Kings, but still disappointing nonetheless. As of now, the latest BASARA game released, to my knowledge, is one focused entirely on the life and times of Yukimura, specifically because Koei released a game that was exactly that called Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada. Right before that though, we have Sengoku BASARA 4 Sumeragi, an updated re-release of 4 with some bonus content, which again was a Japan-only release so if you wanna check it out then can import it through Amazon. I had actually managed to find a blog post that has an entire translation guide for the game and its baseline 4 predecessor, so you don't have to end up navigating through the moonrunes yourself.
oh i did not know basara had that many video games i only heard of the anime and have never even watched it yet tbh...
if you really wanna try the latest one you should play the fourth one,as far as i know it's available on asian ps store. It your typical over the top musou with a little bit of DMC flavor but fun nonetheless.
I really enjoyed the later sengoku games but i think the newer ones didnt get localized.
I want the other Basara games so bad...I wanna play as the guy who combines with his deer ;__;l
So back in the day I played a BUNCH of this game, but crucially I had only played Dynasty Warriors 2 but liked it, had no idea what a Sengoku Basara was, and I hadn't even heard of Devil May Cry so I didn't notice the blatant bait-and-switch title. So I think I was pretty much the entire target audience for this game, and even then I got it out of a bargain bin!
