Sengoku Basara 2 Retrospective: The Perfect Sequel

Ойындар

The time has come for me to start covering Sengoku Basara 2, in it's entirety. Sengoku Basara 2 was released in 2006, after Capcom's overall big financial success in 2005. I believe Sengoku Basara 2 is the perfect sequel to Sengoku Basara.
An aspect I really like abou Sengoku Basara as a series, Capcom always improved on what they have in the previous game, without taking many things away. Sengoku Basara 2 was able to deliver a game that improves on the first Sengoku Basara game.
In this video, we'll be taking a deeper look on everything you need to know about Sengoku Basara 2.

0:39 A MAJOR correction: In 2003, ¥45 billion is the equivalent of $167 million, not $4.9 trillion. I fucked up the math, so bad! I am actually embarrassed.

Addition : In SB2 now has a Combo Rank System which is inspired by English version of SB1, and Devil May Cry, that is before reaching 100 hit combo, it appears "Ready" at 80 hit combo, then "GO" (NICE) at 100 hit combo, "DOUBLE" (AWESOME) 200 hit combo, "TRIPLE" (RADICAL) 300 hit combo, "BASARA" 400 hit combo, and finally the highest combo rank is "FEVER" (FRENZY) 500 hit combo

One thing that always impressed me with the franchise as a whole is how each one looks visually appealing regardless of the technical limitations of the time. If you go from Basara 1 to Basara 4 while Basara 4 does look objectively better graphics wise, artistically it's so consistant and well illustrated that it's hard to see any difference between them. The character designs and models have aged like fine wine throughout the franchise. A bit of a hot take but it would have been nice to see them carry over the prime mechanic from Devil Kings as despite that game being problematic, I do think the prime system was a good idea and could have been refined in this game.

It's still pretty damg ridiculous that we've missed out on so many Sengoku Basara games to this day. I remember enjoying Samurai Heroes in my PS3 a decade ago and knowing that there were so many more before and after that really had me wondering why we got screwed over so dang much after getting not only that but the freaking ANIME as well!

13:55 I can give some insight as to why the characters mouths don't move during stage cutscenes. The Sengoku BASARA games have always had a low budget compared to Koei's Musou games and CAPCOM's more successful games (Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Street Fighter). I recall reading an interview Kobayashi had some years ago about Sengoku BASARA (I think it was around 2013-2016, I tried looking for the article but had no luck finding it). In this interview he mentioned struggling to convince the higher ups at CAPCOM to secure funding for future Sengoku BASARA games (I could be mistaken about this, but it might have been about getting approval to begin development of Sengoku BASARA 4). They would constantly decline him because they didn't believe the series could achieve high sales numbers compared to other CAPCOM games at the time (For better context, around the PS3 and 360 era, CAPCOM expected high sales from their games, to be more specific they wanted games to sell millions of copies like Call of Duty). Back then Japanese game companies wanted to appeal to the west to potentially increase revenue, and since Sengoku BASARA is a more Japan focused series it wasn't considered a priority. He did eventually succeed in convincing them to work on future Sengoku BASARA games but the budget still remained low. I might be misremembering some of the details but the series having a low budget is a solid reason as to why some of the technical limitations exist.

Talk about Tetsuo Hara, it not first time Tetsuo somehow is linked with Capcom, as Tetsuo Hara basically designed the characters for the Slam Master wrestling game.

Hi, loving the retrospective, but I think that you should show the playable characters better, like just show them in the character select screen and say their names (since they are in Japanese on screen), because you said that the characters are the most important aspect of this franchise I think it would be cool to actually see all of them in each game. Also, maybe after finishing the retrospective or before, a video showing each sengoku basara playable character side by side with their samurai warriors counter part would be really awesome. I think that, like me, most players in the west are more familiar with the warriors tittles, so seeing how they look and maybe play in this "different" version would be awesome!

Thanks for the idea. In regards to characters in Sengoku Basara, I think they need to have videos of their own. There are just so many things to talk about the characters in Basara. I am contemplating on making videos about individual characters. But right now, I am focusing on the overall games themselves. I do livestreams for Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi by the way, and break down every single character that I am playing.

Thank god what a great video, i really wouldnt add much and still learned something. Good one Profar I only played SB2 for the story (with the help of translations ofc). And story wise its good enough, there are major bangers there. Its nice to remember that the replayability of this game is pushed a bit more foward with the characters unique items. Every 4th story mode stage you will have a hidden objetive that if completed you will spawn a golden chest on the map that rewards you with said item. This is the only game on the franchise where you unlock thoose items through hidden objetives instead of buying from the shop or conquest mode.

But, I'd just have them seperated, because I can have more videos as well for this channel. Plus, editing videos longer So, Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes is definitely coming up next. So stay tuned.

Can you make video about basara lore? I was confused about the lore because can't find any english translation about the story. Fun fact : Samurai Warriors banked on the voice actors and their popularity at the time to sell the game, with characters being mostly unique designs save for a select few being inspired by japanese actors(and Date Masamune being a "FUCK YOU" to Capcom by Koei, making him a discount Dante, ironically voiced by the IRL best friend of Dante's japanese voice actor). Sanada Yukimura was the exception, based in looks and personality, along with the voice actor of Ryo Sanada, one of Takeshi Kusao's most famous roles. Meanwhile, Capcom's on the other hand, goes buck wild : -Keiji's design is based on Hara Tetsuo's Hana no Keiji and his final weapon is a nod to spear, rather than an Odachi -Hideyoshi is straight up Raoh from fist of the North Star -Masamune was Dante(as if it wasn't obvious) and Zoro from One Piece taken to an extreme -Yukimura was based on Son Goku from Saiyuki(seriously, they got Hoshi for that and the Gundam references) -Oichi is based on the young photos of a very famous singer, Megumi Asaoka, real name Fujii Kayoko -Honda was a DOM with the shoulderpads of a Gundam and a few such details -Hanbei's design was straight inspired by Zoro -The voice actors were handpicked for maximum Gundam synergy that was going on at the time due to SEED and SEED Destiny -Mitsuhide was partially based on Krauzer from Detroit Metal City And many more. It's not the first time they did it either, they've had a history of doing things like that, at the time they even used likeness of ultra famous and still popular actor Yusaku Masuda for Yagyuu. They really don't hide their inspirations but at times we as foreign audiences(and not of the 70s generation) don't get them. PS : Might be the Bleach fan in me but I always loved the High and Mighty Color opening above all others, until the Battle Heroes opening. Won't be the first time Kobayashi will be involved and insert Bleach stuff in a game he's part of(and I love it).

I wish I liked Sengoku Basara more, but how slowly you get new moves and the lack of replayability to actually unlock and use them (each stage plays out the same way every time), I just never have the desire to come back. The PS2 titles especially have a very limited moveset, which doesn't help. I love gunning down people as Nohime though.
