    Despite the games existing, the tough to develop for reputation still holds true. These guys beat their heads against the thing (and its less-than-stellar emulators) to squeeze out performance. Death by 1,000 VDP1/VDP2 restrictions is the Saturn mantra to me.

    It simply cannot be overstated just how huge of a deal those translations are! This is especially true for Symphony of the Night, Grandia and Lunar. Sadly, only the most hardcore of old-school gamers will understand why. If you're reading this and don't understand why it's a big deal since we already got English versions of these on PS1, I would urge you to do your research. I will not go into all the details here, but basically the Saturn versions are superior due to being higher resolution and having extra content. (SotN on Saturn was a lazy port that was only superior content-wise, but this translation fixes that.)

    @@PandaMoniumReviews Thank you my good sir! I can't wait to try out that drop dead gorgeous FPS! Can you imagine that game hitting in 1995-1997?! That sure would have stopped that "Saturn can't do 3d games" business real quick. I honestly believe the Saturn at its full potential could smoke an N64. It's all down to efficiency and the use of multiprocessors. In 1995, that was a mystery to even the most seasoned of game designers. Today, things are very different...I can't think of a single game made utilizing a single processor like they did in back in the 5th generation. Further, if one were to utilize the 4Mb RAM expansion along with all of the Sega Saturn hardware....I think it would absolutely wipe the floor with every console of the 5th generation.

    I hate this myth that programmers simply "werent good enuf" to develop for the saturn. Acting like because the saturn has a dozen coprocessors that you could execute any random code on was a good thing is a misnomer. It was difficult to develop for because the architecture was *bad*, and no degree of finesse was going to make up for this. PSX games looked far superior not just because it was easier to develop for, but because the marriage of components was simply superior. Even cycle perfect code design could never make a game look as good on the saturn as it could on the PSX.

  • @knight0fdragon

    @knight0fdragon

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not sure where you’re going with this….. 1st. “Programmers weren’t good enough” is not the myth. You may be confusing it with the programmers did not know how to program for the Saturn, which are 2 different things. 2nd. No, the architecture is not bad, it is simply built entirely different than the way that PlayStation was designed that developers were forced to pick a side, and then have the port to the other system be inferior because of it. There are quite a number of games on the Saturn that could not be done in the same way on PlayStation. Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Zwei are two games that would have suffered on the PSX due to the PlayStation being unable to render infinite planes or sprites without an excessive number of polygons. The problem with the “architecture” was simply that the documentation behind it was absolutely terrible. Since we now have 25+ years of documentation and resource and community members correcting the poor documentation, we are getting more and more people learning that it is not difficult, just different, and creating some awesome new works for the system.

  • @codmott286

    @codmott286

    @@knight0fdragon what you cite as an advantage is actually a crutch. Nobody wanted to do infinite plains, that was simply a poor man's way out of rendering proper 3d landscapes. The panzer dragoon games arent enhanced by "water to the horizon" depth, they're handicapped by it. You get a game that is clearly falling back on a gimmick because the system itself was no good at rendering large outdoor areas, hence the reason it played "on rails" to begin with.
