God, I can't imagine how anyone developing the original Sonic X-Treme thought the fisheye lens would be a good idea.

  • @TectonicImprov

On paper I can kinda understand it. The fisheye lens does, in theory, let you see more of the scenery at once which in a game as fast as Sonic would be helpful. In practice it just looks like a mess, lol. I don't really blame the original developers or anything for the decision though because there was absolutely no blueprint to work off of to make a 3d Sonic game. Super Mario 64 wasn't even out yet.

Fish eye effect gives a sensation of speed, makes normal 3d look much faster,I would say it was a way of making a slow engine quicker which would be needed for a sonic game but also because the engine wasn't speed orientated They should have made a racing game type of engine much like they did for sonic adventure I remember one of my friends telling me he seen sonic adventure before release and he was amazed by it,he told me it was like fzero x n64 but sonic

@@patrickhawthorneLS Sonic R proves Sonic could have worked on the Saturn. If the maps were more restricted than what Sonic R presented, the game play could have been fun. A lot of the small items and enemies could have been sprites. Mario 64 did that

This was really enjoyable to watch and very exciting to see new saturn games, translations and tools You are all doing amazing work and it is VERY much appreciated I personally would love to see a day when xl releases his engine and tools for us all to have the chance to work on projects for the saturn, the joe engine is actually more impressive in its scope than what I had originally thought, seing these projects and their progress encourages me to want to work on things I only ever dreamed of for the saturn so thank you to all For me there are two things that I would love to see running on the saturn,id simply like to know if they are at all possible 1.a mario 64 castle demo,1 environment and a fully functional mario to control,I have always wanted to see a fully 3d platformer on the saturn,I would like to see how far the saturn could be pushed towards this using mario 64 as the upper limit in terms of poly count, high resolution textures, speed and draw distance, the saturn demo from last year with the pony was quite impressive, especially framerate and draw distance, but I wonder what the saturn could be capable of if it were drawing much smaller single rooms in high resolution 2.sonic adventure SS Take burning rangers ,the speed, character model view point and level design and swap the model for a low poly sonic adventure one,I think burning rangers was the baseline for sonic team when they were developing a 3d sonic game, for me,burning rangers reminds me ALOT of sonic adventure - sonic adventure is more like a racing game akin to fzero than an adventure platformer like sm64 and I think the saturn can pull it off burning rangers style so I would love to see a demo of a sonic game where the focus is on a streaming racing style 3d environment,if the PlayStation can do spyro, then could the saturn do a spyro clone with sonic ? To take the starfox megadrive demo back in time to when starfox was just released for the snes and show the world,no one would believe it yet we can see what is possible,I think the saturn is capable of more,XL proves this with his amazing engine

Irreel is absolutely fantastic, I knew the Saturn never reached its full potential even as a kid in the 90's. It will sound insane, but if I was a billionaire , projects to revive the Saturn would totally happen and I'd personally pay handsomely these teams to make official games and even bring Shenmue to the Saturn. All the sequels the competition got the Saturn didn't, they would be brought to the Saturn, as they should. Sonic World from Sonic Jam would become a full-fledged game. Even as a Sonic kid I never understood the appeal of the Sonic X-Treme prototypes and always thankful they never released that, Sonic R was my 3D Sonic on the Saturn. Now with DOOM 32X Resurrection, the Saturn must be avenged with the true DOOM version it always deserved, that id dev shat on Saturn players back then, how they gave the crappy version the Saturn got the green light is beyond me. The first Brazilian homebrew shown here feels like the Atari 2600 attempting to present anime sprites, can they be any jaggier? Metal Slader Glory for the Famicom features anime style artwork and looks superb, basically HD in comparison, I know this is just a homebrew, but the lack of care unfortunately is impossible to ignore, the real backgrounds also will never blend well with anime style artwork.

I'd pay too for a real "fourth generation" SS title (Shen Mue should have been one, along with VF3 conversion on stock hw, as confirmed by Yu himself at the time), sadly currently I don't see any competent/skilled enough developer (apart from Maxim/XL2) which could handle those kind of projects..

With infinite money to spare, assembling teams would be easier than we imagine, specially with better tools and more knowledge of the hardware available today, and many passionate fans would be willing to work on it. I think we could reach many of the best developers for the Saturn from the time, Japanese and Western, if not to work on new stuff, they could provide important insights, maybe even source codes, etc. We'd totally see sequels we didn't get, and projects left behind, not to mention new stuff from fans, like Ireel and the such.

If you look at Sonic Z-Treme (XL2) from a few years ago, his take on Sonic Xtreme has better draw distance, but it looks different from Voxel’s demo. Greater draw distance would depend on how efficient the developer’s game engine is with the console’s resources.
