Parodius gets canceled | Reviewing Every U.S. Saturn Game | Episode 26.5 of 246

It was possibly the closest Konami got in history to publishing a Parodius game in North America. A "deluxe pack" featuring near arcade-perfect ports of the second and third installments to this wacky Japanese shoot-em-up series was translated in English for both the Sega Saturn and Playstation. But in late 1995, promises turned false. This is a progression through the game's development and its wildest stories, going from "confirmed" to "canceled" in North America.

Welcome to the series where I review every single Sega Saturn game released in North America by order of release date. I made a spreadsheet with all the games satakore.com has as American releases, listing them off by order of release date, including sources. All the games are narrowed down to the month they came out in the U.S.

    A few notes: I messed up, Zombies ate my Neighbors was developed in the west. Stage 3 in Gokujou is made of biscuits, I initially thought it was cheese. This might be my least accurate video thus far, but those fact errors are too minor for me to delete and reupload. Sorry. The PandaMonium theme song is not gone. It will be used in the upcoming Corpse Killer vid, and in all other “main” videos for the series. This is a special episode. Much of the Parodius Da! and Gokujou Parodius gameplay capture in the first half is on Saturn. This is a Saturn video after all. Other platforms are specified in the voice over. Giant thanks to Tit0 and Jordan Ryan for voicing over the interview translations. Massive thanks to Shmupilations for translating these interviews at all and making them free for the public. So you know I mean it when I say, I think this is the greatest quality to subscriber discrepancy I've ever seen on KZread. Your videos are well written, well researched, funny and interesting. On top of that you have the benefit of talking about a topic that very few other people do. This channel deserves to stand next to all the most popular scripted video game content on KZread. Please keep doing what you're doing and spreading the word about this extremely weird, niche, beautiful console.

There are so many good collections on Saturn that never got a western release, and it's a shame that this one came so close. Curious kind of case, really... in Japan it was doing beautifully, bringing it's own flagship franchises to fill in shoes of the Blue Blur, like the highly beloved Sakura Wars-franchise. I think it came to SOJ and SOA really struggling to make each other's ends meet together, leading to Saturn becoming the strangely elusive console it is in today's gaming history.

    It's sort of depressing how little Konami supported the Saturn (a good port of Policenauts, MSX antiques, and a handful of PS1 ports farmed out to their bottom tier Nagoya studio), to say nothing of their meager (but exceptional) support of the Genesis and borderline zilch Dreamcast library.

  • @WeskerSega

    @WeskerSega

    You really think that's a depressing or small support of Konami to the Sega Saturn? With big names like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Genso Suikoden, Policenauts, Vandal Hearts and all the Gradius, Salamander, Parodius and TwinBee titles? Plus some more than decent puzzle, sports and visual novel games? I don't agree. It's simply somewhat overshadowed because you could play pretty much all that on the PS1 too. But what if you isolate it from that fact because you are not interested on the Sony console at all? Do you really think that back then people could afford having all consoles or access to the catalogue of all them easily like now? If you consider the Sega Saturn Konami titles on their own and disregard their PS1 counterparts, then for sure they stand out as a very decent library. Even somewhat better than Konami's N64 support, or at least the Castlevania offering is better (conversion is problematic, okay, it's still Castlevania: Symphony of the Night at its core) and I really only miss a Ganbare Goemon game or the sole Sega Saturn footy game being as good as the N64 ones, but that's it. Now, compared it to Konami's support on the Mega Drive, okay, Konami did some quite sweet titles for the Sega 16-bit console (even though overall there were less games produced) and I can buy you that despite the sad fact that the Mega Drive didn't have a sole shoot 'em up from Konami while the Sega Saturn had almost all of them. You really want a depressing support of Konami to a Sega console? The Dreamcast one. That's really an awful and botchered way to support a console, with so much cancelled titles and really subpar efforts, Airforce Delta/Deadly Skies and Silent Scope being about the only titles that really are something fitting for the console.

  • @garaschneider4808

    @@WeskerSega Isolating Saturn's Konami support from the PS1 is disingenuous when you got those games on PS1 and then some (like MGS and Silent Hill) and doesn't erase that the Saturn became a low priority for them over time. Not to mention some of those ports (like SOTN and Suikoden) flat out stunk on Saturn. "Do you really think that back then people could afford having all consoles or access to the catalogue of all them easily like now?" People who furiously checked Usenet back then for what games were coming out for Saturn seemed to care about what was available, and nowadays when we look at a system's library as a whole and compare it to what came out on other systems, it seems rather lacking. And when put in the proper context of the time as an American gamer, it's especially made worse that some of the good Saturn conversions (Policenauts, Parodius, Tokimeki) never made it to the states, and this only got worse as the US Saturn library got more anemic over time.

  • @WeskerSega

    @WeskerSega

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@garaschneider4808 If you are going to give less worth to a system library because of sharing games with some other one, then pretty much you have to disregard every single multiplatform or ported game from history and only consider the truly exclusive ones. It's not disingenous. Especially it wasn't back then when only rich people could afford having all systems. Normally people would have mostly one console and then, if they wanted another one, they would sell the previous one in order to affort the other. It was rarely seen to have, say, the Sega Saturn, the PlayStation and/or the Nintendo 64 on the same shelf back then. Obviously there's now lot of retrogaming enthusiasts (especially collectors) owning all of them or simply having easy ways to access their libraries without even having the systems themselves, but that's not the point we are discussing here. What's the sense of having ports then? You can pretty much disregard Game Arts' output on the PS1 applying that logic, this is the other way around to Konami as in that case it's the PS1 library of that particular company the one which is full of Sega Saturn conversions, but I suppose the Sony fellows will tell you they prefer to enjoy the chance of having as much games possible on their favourite system, instead of looking for the same games on different systems. That's what you can also do with those Konami titles for the Sega Saturn if applying the same logic. Both that and the regional issue which obviously it's something pretty much specific (the games are still there, they are not to blame if you can't really access them), seem to me like a very poor excuse to just disregard what is a fine library of Konami titles for the Sega Saturn. It's much more worse and shameful what they did for the Dreamcast.

    As a lucky European, for once, that got to play Parodius Da on SNES when it was released in PAL territories, and completely fell in love with it, Gradius, Konami and everything related, your video and the amount of information you managed to compile are a dream come true. Thank you so much! On a censorship note, the SNES PAL version was not as butchered as the Deluxe pack for Saturn, BBBUUUT... I remember being extremely disappointed when I had seen in a magazine you could actually uncover the Birth of Venus in stage 3, and that was nowhere to be found in the PAL version. That and the bunnies in the clouds stage, which were turned into simple flying bubbled women... which was kinda lame, as censorhip always is.

And of course Scenario 1 had the best story by far, though 2 had the most interesting battles, and 3 had the best roster. Still glad I finally got to play them, even if they were not as good as I always imagined they'd be after playing Scenario 1. Heck! Scenario 2 literally pulls a Vince McMahon "It's me Austin! It was me all along!" and the plot takes a nosedive it never recovers from. Looking forward to it's eventual episode... and Dragonforce.

    What a highly informative, even somber of a video man - it really suprises me how just deep this rabbit hole on Parodius Deluxe Pack getting US-release just goes than I expect. Ultimately it bums me out that Parodius got so strangely shafted from US-release at the end too, imagine the possible followup games like Jikkyo or Sexy that could have come in their translated forms (Easy leeway could have been taken with the Asian release of Sexy Parodius on Arcades, which had most of english text translated) Also that made-up US Parodius Deluxe-physical is making me drool hard, gimme... wonder where one can buy it~! Anyway, because my OCD compels me to do it this way while lazily putting off making my videos about it eventually, here's few unexpected Parodius-trivia related to your video: - Twinbee's boxing gloves actually were never part of his original arsenal in his own series before DA - in fact, the"Rocket Punch" itself makes fun of the gameplay element in original Twinbee where his arms are a vulnerable part of him via having their own hitboxes, which if getting hit on, would make him lose his abiltiy to lob bombs down on the grounded enemies. This tied with the evergrowing Giant Robot Anime genre during the 80s, had the devs essentially take this part of him to a more exaggarated gung-ho direction with the all-too cliche Rocket Punch-schtick on Twinbee. It wouldn't be until Pop'n Twinbee that this cute ship would finally adopt punching as one of his signature attacks onward. (You can see more observations on my end from this old video I had on KZread back in 2012 before getting taken down by copyright strikes: vimeo.com/388733691) - On that end, the very part about how Gokujyo (Fantastic) Parodius was looking to be geared at the SHMUP-enthusiasts looking for a huge tribute on SHMUPs in a world overrun by fighting games back then, is very much evidenced in the arsenals of cast in that game: the Aura-powerup is not the only thing lifted from Darius for Michael, but the Wave Laser is as well, and to lesser extent, Round Shot (though that's harder to explain, the best I can sum it is that it seems to emulate the fully powered-up Silver Hawk from Darius II, if collecting enough yellow and red powerups to create this omni-directional 9-way coverage around him.) Mambo, Hikaru and some other are as much interesting pieces of SHMUP history as well to dwell through when I get to them eventually. Been just looking for a possible editor to help me out getting started after ignoring the series for years despite being crazy into it around ten years ago - lately been messing with a possible script for a whole analysis of Parodius DA's magnificent soundtrack for a starter.) Anyway, cheers for this video, and here's for more Saturn-coverage in the future. Stay pandamonic - *we love shooting games!*

    I’m a huge Darius fan, that parallel to the Darius II power ups does make sense, and is very subtle. The follow up games this could have had in the west would indeed have been great. I like to imagine what comedian they would have used for a translated Jikkyou. Like what if Gilbert Gottfried did that? Oh the possibilities. Man, great video!!! You just keep getting better and better! I live in Portugal and back then I remember everyone was obsessed with 3D games. The Sega Saturn over here was the console to own and, I think, more successful then PlayStation until 1998. However, the games everyone wanted to play were Sega Rally, Duke Nukem 3D, Virtua Fighter 2, Wipeout, Fifa Soccer, Worldwide Soccer, Tomb Raider and Dragon Ball Z. I never stopped buying Sega Saturn games since 1996 to this day, in shops and second hand and I can tell you 2d games were always cheap. I remember buying lots of games in second hand and 2d games were given almost free. I got Galactic Attack for free when I bought Virtua Cop 2. I also got Street fighter alfa for free when I bought Fighters Megamix. Only when retro gaming became more widely spread thanks to KZread did 2D games start going up in price and 3D games lost value due to better experiences in modern consoles and PCs. And I remember seeing the prices going up when they were shown in videos from CGR, AVGN and others. So, looking back, I think Sega, Sony, Konami, Nintendo, etc, released small quantaties or cancelled 2D games because they looked at the numbers and saw no return of investment. People in general despised 2D games, they were seen as the past and uninteresting. For example, you put Tomb Raider against Pitfall or Worldwide Soccer 98 against Italia 90… its like comparing black and white tv with a 1080p LED TV. And you think, hum, these games are better because 3D gives more immersion and freedom. So you want racing games in 3D, you want action games in 3D…fighting games in 3d… But hey, I love your videos, Project COE, Sega Lord X, Carters Retro Reviews, Master-Cast TV, Saturn shiro and Saturn Junkyard. It reminds me why I love the Sega Saturn and then, there I go to the shelf get one game and start playing it with my daughter by my side :)

    I can vouch for him. Indeed in Portugal the Saturn was the default 32 bit console of choice until mid 1997. Only after Tomb Raider 2 and Resident Evil 2 were released did the Playstation became the default choice here. Knew a ton of people with Dreamcasts as well. Sega was well loved in our country.

  • @WeskerSega

    @@Edexote Tomb Raider II was pretty much stolen by Sony because of the exclusivity deal. This was pretty much the consequence of big companies swimming in money from other different fields entering the videogame business and then downsizing the traditional companies by starting a money spending war like Sony pretty much did (Microsoft is also quite the same). Resident Evil 2 was a different situation to Tomb Raider II. That one definitely was going to be released for the Sega Saturn, Capcom wouldn't have accepted a cheque and betray their loyal Sega Saturn fans like Eidos did. What happened is that due to Sega already phasing out the Sega Saturn (even in Japan) and impeding release of the Dreamcast, Sega and Capcom prefered to reallocate the resources of the oingoing Sega Saturn conversion to a brand new Resident Evil for Dreamcast, and thus, Resident Evil Code: Veronica was born. Capcom also did like a sort of apology by releasing Resident Evil 2 for the Dreamcast too. Eidos doing the same? Nah.

    It's very strange and a shame this wasn't released in the US. The 90's had a goofy vibe for most kids and young adults in the US and Gradius was already popular so I think it could have been a big hit! I tended to blame everything on SOA back in the day but after having seen a few recent documentaries, it looks like SOJ was actually more to blame (although we don't know in this case). But either way, I certainly disagreed with America's insistence on changing the box art to be more "Americanized" on many titles since they underestimated the growing appeal of anime style art at the time. Anyway, another great episode! I appreciate it!

    That's straight heritage from the western arcade version. Japanese text is kept intact from the Japanese version and what they did was fitting an English translation just below it, using the game text font. Odd thing here is why they didn't remove the Japanese text in the process, but then again, the Parodius arcade localizations were somewhat cheap. In fact, the western versions of the Parodius Da arcade have the title and intro still fully in Japanese. For the European Deluxe Packs, they did the extra touch of localizing the tittle screen one based on the European SNES title but they still left the intro in Japanese even though that had been localized in the European SNES version.

    Having played the UK copy, I give it a Good/:D. It's rarity in the UK makes it an expensive game of Legendary Stature but I don't feel it is a system seller. It is more like the cherry on top of the cake. Very Welcome but not essential. Also, I wish we got the US CD cases for our games. We have awkward plastic boxes with the covers glued on (probably animal glue as the boxes can smell a bit foul) that peel and fade with time.

    11:26 I am 44 so I when I was a kid, I played with the NES... Once I went to Super NES, many games that are now qualified as very difficult today were not that difficult when you grew up with a NES. Parodius (or Super Ghouls'n Ghost or Contra III) is considered to be very difficult but it is really not that hard. I agree with the cheap deaths. But there is always a path. You have to find it, you have to die and repeat, yes, but once you find it, the difficult part of the level becomes easy, and you move to next enigma. You have to see the Gradius/Parodius/Nemesis series more as a puzzle game to master it.
