REEEEEMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIX!
Could Sega have launched the American Saturn with Virtua Fighter Remix on the surprise release of May 11th? I explore that question while intricately comparing the gameplay to the original Saturn port.
Big shoutout to SaturnDave for the amazing new thumbnail design. He does sick what-if repros of Saturn games that never made it to the U.S.: / @saturndave
Head for Saturn with Sega Saturn, Shiro! We do podcasts, articles, and cool videos related to the benchmark of engineering excellence: www.segasaturnshiro.com
Major shoutout to Pimpeaux for all the release date research help and getting this series on what is now the “correct” order.
Welcome to the series where I review every single Sega Saturn game released in North America by order of release date. I made a spreadsheet with all the games satakore.com has as American releases, listing them off by order of release date, including sources. All the games are narrowed down to the day they came out in the U.S.

The missing lights on Sarah's stage is not just a missing effect, Remix lacks real time light-sourcing altogether, so all highlights and shadows are "baked" into the textures. This is actually a very common sacrifice on many Saturn games since all of the hi-res fighters like VF2, DOA and Last Bronx also lack real time light-sourcing. The lack of light-sourcing somewhat gives the impression that character models are more complex or detailed than they are in terms of geometry since lights create contrast by nature and makes hard edges more visible. The 1st Tekken also lacks real time light-sourcing but on the flipside runs at 60 fps. Awesome video BTW, what you said at the end about no one hating Sega more than people who love Sega is so relatable, watching them make mistake after mistake all these years is so frustrating.

D-Xhird is a 3D fighting game that uses light sourcing. That game was an interesting looking tech demo for the Saturn. Prior to that Toshinden URA attempted to mimic the effect with some kind of coloring effect in two of its stages.

  • @RetrOrigin

    @RetrOrigin

    3 жыл бұрын

@@ENiceGeo Yes, but D-Xhird does not run in Saturn's hi-res mode. The point is that none of the Hi-res mode games utilize real time light-sourcing. Low res fighting games like D-Xhird, Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, Final Fight Revenge, the Original Virtua Fighter and others do utilize light-sourcing. In general, light-sourcing was commonly sacrificed even in low res games from other genres on the Saturn, Sega Rally, both Virtua Cop games and House of the Dead to name a few popular ones lack light-sourcing.

We were competitive arcade fighters at the time. VF on Saturn gave us practice at home with the virtua stick. Then my brother imported a Sega Megalo sit down projector cabinet and VF2. What a story. I had no idea so much had gone into VF Remix. Back in the day, having Sega send the game to me for free, it was like a dream come true. I could not believe how amazing it looked over the original, or just in general. I don't recall signing up on any given website, but I was obsessive-compulsive about sending in registration cards back then, so that's may be how they found me. At any rate, a great video! I always like to imagine how things may or may not have fared differently had Sega just waited a bit longer, had VF Remix as the pack in and launched with the powerhouse VF2, Virtua Cop and Rally trilogy...

I only ever played remix after vf2. This being the case, I always saw it as a gimmicky version of the first game, and honestly felt at the time and to this day it doesn't look as nice as the original pack in saturn version. Back in the day of its arcade debut, most people would have thought the texture free appearance was an intentional design choice, and a good one at that. I can say that remix at launch would have been the better option had it been a possibility. It would have been a good sales pitch, seeing anything marketed as better, new and exclusive is certainly going to be a good thing for marketing. I think for sega to rewrite their wrong with the poor launch of the saturn, they should have created an awesome sequel to Virtua Racing and released a new saturn bundle called the VIRTUA BOX Trio, with copies of Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2 and Virtua Racing 2. A light gun included in the bundle wouldn't hurt either.

Quake Saturn a good microcosm for Sega itself honestly.

Interesting content. I love all the research that goes into these -- much better than the typical retro video that focuses more on personal reminiscence of playing an old game. I do have one minor quibble: playing VF well has less to do with reflexes and more to do with anticipating what your opponent wants to do and knowing the properties of both your and their moves. Fighting games are one of the few types of games where you will regularly see guys in their 30s or 40s getting top placement for that reason.

I really liked Sega’s original “Virtua” style. The clean, flat shaded polygons were what I thought of when I pictured high-end virtual reality simulations at the time and Virtua Racing (VR) and Virtua Fighter exemplified that. While I also liked other styles like that of Toshinden on PlayStation, I kinda hated the mutt look that came with low poly graphics and low res texture maps. Virtua Fighter Remix was the worst such offender- it was at an awkward adolescent moment between what was out of date and what was coming next. I remember playing it at a friends house and while I love how that game plays, it really looked generic compared to the original, which had this bold visual style. I understand why Sega would be in a hurry to prove that they could make texture mapped fighters but I wish they could have leaned even more into the flat shaded polys instead.

I had a dream/nightmare about a baby cone head who was sleeping next to me and being very demanding and I needed to look after it even though it’s terrifying and super annoying. Virtua Racing on Genesis does not lag by the way. It doesn’t drop a frame at any point, maintaining 15fps at all times. Fun fact. A version of Virtua Fighter was actually finished for the SVP chip. Here’s hoping it turns up at some point.

So I got half way through your Virtua Cop video and thought "No. I need to watch the rest before finishing this." I just want to say that it is an absolute travesty that your channel hasn't popped off yet. Your early videos were witty, weird and informative but as they go along its so wonderful to see how much you began to believe in yourself and delved deeper into your research. I know it sucks knowing that you put so much work into this project but seriously; this is so fucking fascinating. I've never watched a series that goes this deep into the time line of a console; especially one as interesting and tragic as the Saturn. I also LOVE how much 90s media you put in. The skateboarding, the radio shows etc. It really sets the mood and reminds you of what it was like to grow up during that time. Listening to HUM's Electa2000 and boasting that your RPG came on 4 CD's.

The two machines were designed so that porting games between the two would be an easy and quick process. Though sometimes, there are slight differences. Or, it's possible that the changes don't yield ANY visible difference. People have a tendency to over embellish these sorts of things.

I realize this is 2 years too late and may not be as helpful but you misunderstood what SEGA was saying about the changes to the response time. They were talking about controller input latency. The pack-in had pretty bad input latency and it's one of the reasons why the 32X version plays better. There are lots of ways to measure it. One way is to record yourself pressing the button and seeing how long it takes to be represented on the screen. But I want to add that your videos are great in so many respects, good work!

When I picked up my Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation at the PSX's launch Virtua Fighter was the big game I wanted to play. For some reason, I never cared for the first Tekken. I remember seeing Virtua Fighter in the arcades by happenstance around its first week. I walked into my local arcade to try and get some quality SF2 Championships Edition play (I think this was the newest one at the time). Too my surprise no one was playing Street Fighter 2 and that was an odd sight. At this point, I'm completely bewildered by what was happening and I could hear a very large crowd in the back somewhere...did a new Street Fighter 2 launch? I walked to the back to catch a glimpse of an arcade cab I have never seen before, intrigued I went to see what everyone was going crazy over. What I saw was simply something I could not explain nor comprehend. Fully realized 3d characters moving in a three dimensional space and it was buttery smooth. I wanted the game right then and there but I knew my Sega Genesis/Sega CD nor Snes could do such a thing. Flash forward to that September of 1995 and on the way home I had images of that first time flooding my mind. I was going to be able to play Virtua Fighter in all of its glory right in my bedroom and nothing else mattered. None of the other new games I bought for both the PlayStation and Saturn were going to compare...or so I thought. Unfortunately, the Saturn port was not where it should have been and I was...not happy. Bad polygon flicker, characters disappearing during the replays, and something just felt off. I told myself, maybe this is the way it is and these new machines are great at least it's close...that is until I popped in Ridge Racer into my PlayStation. Holy shit was that a mother f'ing showstopper. From that point forward I began to really worry about Sega in the 32-bit generation. Thankfully, Virtua Fighter was not my only new Saturn game and Panzer Dragoon really set the tone right. If only Sega had kept pushing titles like that... Addendum- I got my copy of Virtua Fighter Remix by calling the 1-800-USA-SEGA. Oh and Sega did a promotion like the free Virtua Fighter Remix before. When Sonic The Hedgehog became the pack in for the Genesis, Sega gave away copies of the game with proof of purchase from the Altered Beast pack-in version. That's how I got my "NOT FOR RESALE" copy of Sonic

Knowing Sega they probably held off on releasing Remix with the America launch because it wasn't ready to put out in Japan, and they refused to let America have a game before Japan got it. They've done it before! Good lord was Sega run like such a chaotic mess at this time.

It's no wonder why the Saturn failed in North America - the more you look at the timeline via each game's release it becomes more and more tragic. Rushed release of the system & games, no foresight to hit the market first with the better version of available games (see Daytona USA, VF rather than Remix), no thought to what the competition will do next, not having a long term plan to keep growing it's biggest IP, lack of oversight when outsourcing... it's staggering. Still love me Saturn though 👍

Love the Saturn. Just purchased my first Japanese console. White model 2. Very late to the party yes, but man! buying new games is addicting and fun all over again. I have VF2 and just recently purchased VF Remix. I never got a free copy back in the day 😭. So I had to get Remix in the collection. Ram cart fighters are a blast. I own two fighter sticks from back when making them even better. I now see why the Saturn was more successful in Japan. Many more great titles that never made it to the states. My og black model 2 still works flawlessly. It totally sucks how that great piece of hardware was handled. The people behind the console are the true failures. They done f'd up a great creation. SEGA!!!

Virtua Bros Thanks dude! Love your content as well. Pack in seemed to always give me a somewhat steady 30 FPS. Game journalists of the 90’s say the arcade version also runs at 30, which I believe to be accurate. It wouldn’t be until Virtua Fighter 2 when Sega finally reached that crisp 60 FPS.

PandaMonium Reviews Apparently VF1 ended up being 30FPS due to the lack of time AM2 had to optimize code but at least those 30FPS are solid. Similar to other arcade games Model2 VF2 runs at a weird framerate which is 57.5 FPS for some reason while the Saturn port runs at 60FPS.

Rolando Marrero All versions of VF1 are a solid 30FPS unless you count VF 10th Anniversary which runs at 60FPS personally i think it doesn't count because that's a remake of VF1 made using VF4Evo's engine and characters.

Tried this game recently and Its kind of... It honestly took a while to explaining how the game feels because I was pretty mixed on it at first. The game feels both slow and fast. I say slow because you don’t really have many options for movement and the run doesn’t feel smooth when transitioning back into a normal fight stance. The game does have ways to get back up quickly and wake up attacks so its not too bad when it comes to getting back on your feet. Now I say fast because regardless of what I mentioned previously you gotta be on your toes with the Computer opponent. After a few matches they will definitely start to outspeed and shower you with attacks that will often ignore any moves you try to do to them. The computer can pick a move that will out speed yours and will focus on trying to knock you down most of a match or out of the ring. The Difficulty is random for every playthrough. Your first can be tough, your second could be easier, third it could be harder than the first, fourth can be the hardest group of matches you’ve had so far and the fifth could be the easiest run you’ve ever had with the game. Sometimes when you think you’ve got the game down already. The next play through can make it feel the exact opposite. It was interesting as I’ve never had a fighting game act like this before. I also noticed the damage of certain moves aren’t consistent either. Some characters have some moves that do a whole lot of damage at the start of a round. A good example is Akira. He has a move that knocked out 70-80% of my health at the start of the round. Other times it looks like only 35-40% damage was done. Another good example would be Kage, Pai and Sarah’s Backflip kick. A few times they were able to knock out half of my health when it was still full. I’m not sure why the game does this other than it seems like the fighter that achieves first blood with a stronger attack gets extra damage done to the other. This aspect should have had a little more balance but then again if it was like that in the original arcade. Then it seems like a great way for the opponent to eat up your quarters. Its Not a bad game at all by any means but you can definitely tell its one of the very first 3D fighting games for any home console. I guess its still alright today for a game released back in 1993-95. Definitely better than Battle Arena Toshinden. Can’t wait for the review of that one.

Just imagine if Sega made Panzer Dragoon the pack in game and released Virtua Fighter Remix as the official Virtua Fighter for Saturn a month or two later. Battle Arena Toshingen would have been just a lame duck PS1 launch because there is no rushed Virtua Fighter to compare to, Tekken's impact would have been diminished because Virtua Fighter is the better and more balanced game, Dragoon would have shown gamers the capabilities of not only the Saturn but what 5th generation consoles could provide, and there would be much less ammunition for critics to fire at Sega for their botchery. Who knows if the Saturn would have survived the PlayStation's early barrage of games, but still.

Is there a way to run VF Remix without the textures so it looks like the original arcade version? Hard to say if that would be any better anyway, but it would be great to have a non shaded version with the better non glitchy graphics. I got the Saturn on launch day here in Australia, which was in September, and although i bought the package that had 2 controllers and 3 games ($899 for that, or $799 with just one pad and VF) but i had to wait almost 2 weeks before Daytona USA arrived in the mail. It was not available to buy on launch day. When i had preordered my machine there were no 3 game packs left to order, but the game shop i bought it from did the same deal, and gave me a retail boxed controller and Clockwork Night with it on the day. I played Virtua Fighter for pretty nearly 2 weeks straight, and hardly did anything else. When Daytona arrived in the mail that was all i did for MONTHS, couldn't get enough of it!! Wasn't until i went to an arcade 6 months later that i realised Daytona wasn't close to Arcade perfect!!
