Translation from SamIAm of the V.R. Virtua Racing reviews [1995-12-22 issue, page 202]:
(Please keep in mind, these are quick and rough translations, giving us the general gist of what they're saying in the magazine.)
"Plentiful courses, plentiful cars, with everything from go-carts to F1 racers. The grand prix mode where you earn points as you go is quite exciting, and it's nice to be able to choose original Saturn courses. I just can't deal with how hard the courses are to look at. The way the point of view switches around depending on the circumstances as you race is impossible for beginners to deal with. I wanted the display to at least be easier to understand. The scant music is the same as the arcade, so I'm not going to say much about it, but I remember little in the way of it being enjoyable. Since you're able to choose your car, I wanted the F1 car to feel a little faster. (6) [written by Atsuko]
At a glance, it looks pretty, and it's fun with all the new courses they prepared. However, as someone who was in charge of [reviewing?] the Mega Drive, 32X and arcade versions, I can't accept how the controls feel different. Doing precise cornering is what was so fun about the original game, but the Saturn version feels like it has a tendency toward understeering, like you just can't turn. In conclusion, if this were an original game, I'd give it a 7 or 8, but since it's a port of a game as big as Virtua Racing, I'm subtracting 2. (6) [written by "London" Kobayashi]
Once upon a time, Yu Suzuki gathered a huge amount of data about cars, took the first 3D board from the biggest name in arcade games, and created the masterpiece that is the basis for this game. I was eagerly anticipating a port of this masterpiece, which drew the curtain on the present age of 3D. However, this Saturn port? Maybe it's because another company ported it, but despite it appearing similar, the control and the contents of the game are weak. The various new cars and courses, and the cool replay mode, are all perfectly enjoyable, but the more passionate fans will find it lacking. The load times are long, too. (6) [written by Uncle Jam]"

Though every time you mention yu suzuki, it reminds me just how shocking it is that a man can go from developing frickin Super Hang-On, Outrun, Space Harrier, Virtua Racing, and Virtua Fighter, to shitting out shenmue 3 dear God why

It's funny how Suzuki didn't want to call the game Virtual because he thought it would have a different meaning in the States. I and everyone else I knew called it "Virtual Fighter" and "Virtual Racing". I called it that not even realizing the "L" had been removed because the graphics were exactly like I had seen in virtual reality at the time. I thought that's why Sega called it virtual. When I saw Virtua Fighter the first time I was like "Look! Virtual reality graphics!"

I was surprised to see you didn’t have the racing wheel; I’m just now realising it’s probably a regional thing. Here in the UK, Saturn racing wheels are literally as cheap as a regular controller. I got mine boxed for £10 from a retro shop and I’ve loved it for years. It really makes every racing game so much smoother.

Honestly, I think this game got more hate than it deserved. If you accept it for what it is, rather than as a port, it had a lot going for it. It’s also pretty ironic that the flat shaded look that everyone hated back then, ended up aging a lot better than many of it’s contemporaries. Considering all they were up against and only using one CPU, it has a really crisp, colorful look. And the 2 player mode was fun too!

Can't wait to hear your in-depth thoughts on the wheel. Mine has a bit of a dead zone in the middle, and I don't know if that it typical across all wheels, or if mine was just well-loved by its previous owner

Mine doesn’t seem to have the dead zone, as it was gently used. My mission stick on the other hand seems to be slightly off center. I have to hold it in a certain spot to “stop moving.”

Those two discs you showed came with my Saturn, which I bought on the surprise launch day (Yes, I was surprised by said launch). I didn't have to send away for them as I still have my receipt and fully intact box. Anyway I remember watching the Virtua Racing video and thinking how BAD it looked. It really isn't a good first impression and really soured me on the game... I wasn't looking forward to it at all. They should not have had that video or other videos with such alpha footage. Just a list of games that say "Coming soon" would've sufficed.

I absolutely love this thing. The only game I don’t like with it is Sega Rally. Not sure if it’s because I got so used to the d-pad steering on it, but I can’t get anywhere with the wheel. Every other racing I tried with the wheel was a blast though.

Same. Sega rally controls so well on the dpad. Cornering with the arcade racer changes how I approach my racing lines. Wipeout out with this wheel feels better than a negcon.

As a developer, I don't think getting a bunch of uncommented, undocumented, ASM sourcecode from Japan would have made my life any easier. Doing it from scratch would have been a more enjoyable experience.
