I think it's JRRT's parents. They both died when he was young and for some reason I just see him framing them in a tiny piece of heaven together somewhere living out the lives they wanted to live.

Yes, I do very much think that Tom Bombadil could very well be the Professor himself putting himself in the storyline

It was obvious to me, since I read biography of Tolkien. Still it leaves a question what status Tolkien imagined for his alter-ego. I guess of Maia who entered Arda before it was fully formed and marred.

With a single word, Tom had the power to overturn an entire continent or send the oceans washing over it in a massive deluge. In fact, it was Tom who destroyed Numenor with a single word, and later when the hobbits (then called hob-goblins) fled to the north-east, Tom would destroy these lands west of Eriador too. Only Iluvatar had that power, and Tom would then be his Avatar. We need to be mindful that Sauron was a minor character, just a Maia like Gandalf and his fellow wizards, and like the Balrogs. Sauron served Morgoth, formerly called Melkor, who was banished to the abyss but later escaped. And after he escaped, why didn't he appear in LOTR and other stories? Because Iluvatar sent his avatar Tom Bombadil to entrap him in a tree called Old Man Willow, who was said to be "imprisoned", and not of the race of Ents. In fact, OMW had a tremendous dark power to "corrupt" the world around him to a vast extent from his location, and he is credited with corrupting the Ents. Tom lived in a small valley close to the Withywindle river which he occasionally boated down to visit the hobbits. Many of the creatures in his valley were very old and magical, with talking animals and plants. Here he stayed to guard over OMW as his jailer, until one day OMW would be released from his "chains" and return to the world undoubtedly as Morgoth, who would gather all of the old evil to him once again for one final apocalyptic battle called the Dagor Dagorath with numerous Balrogs, Dragons, massive Spiders, Trolls, Orcs and such. Occasionally, Gandalf or some other important figure visits Tom for advice concerning the future wars, so he knew the future and was willing to guide the protagonists to the correct course of action. At this times, Gandfalf et alia spent long periods of time under Tom's tutelage, which shows us the authority matrix of Maia to Iluvatar's avatar. As for his relationship to Tolkien, Tom was a doll his son enjoyed as a boy. Some claim Tolkien identified with Faramir, but in so very many interviews and letters, Tolkien was 100% clear that he most identified with the hobbits, and with Sam Gamgee most of all. There are just so very many quotes of him saying this.

Absolutely not a self-insert. Tolkien has commented on which character is most like him in LOTR. His answer is... Faramir. Please, let this speculation die. It is a pure ink blot interpretation with nothing to back it up. I do appreciate the Socratic refutation of the other speculations, though.

Tolkien often changed his mind and held multiple takes on his creations. Like all good artists do. Eudaimonist is being a stultified naysayer, sans any consciousness of the possibilities of other 's unconsciousness.

@@qarljohnson4971 I gave an argument in favor of my position. You gave nonsense. Saying that Tolkien changed his mind does not defend the thesis of the video.
