    My parents said it the right way. When I was young I realized that my family had more than others did. I remember asking my mother if we where "rich". Her answer was your Dad and I have some money, however you and your siblings don't. They instilled a work ethic in all 4 of us children, and if we wanted something other than the essentials. We had to pay it ourselves. We all had part time Jobs by 14 or 15.

    @@vz1270 Exactly! What makes this case so awful imo is the fact that this douchebag had enough opportunities to make a decent amount of money - his parents ran several businesses and obviously they loved their kids very much, they didn't want for anything. It was rather pathetic how much he disliked (even hated) his sisters - they were much younger but also more mature and responsible while he couldn't even be bothered to hold down a job to pay child support after he fathered two children! This whole sense of entitlement after he had never done anything to warrant it - and I bet that, if he had gotten away with the murders, he would've burned through all that money in no time! What a jerk...I can't even stand the thought of losing my mother to natural causes some day, much less harming her in any way. It sure sounds cowardly but I would rather go first instead of the other way around.

    I can't help but imagine myself being that 911 operator dealing with a young lady with no idea what is going on except that her brother is attacking her mother, only to end up hearing the same girl you were just talking to presumably get murdered. How do you move on to the next call? How do you end your shift, go home, have a shower and go to bed after hearing a teenage girl get murdered over the phone? First time I've seen a true crime account cover this case. Glad someone finally did. Shawn was definitely a "bragger" when it came to his parents wealth. I met him when we were both on the sales team at a car dealership, in Illinois. The first thing he told me, was how rich and successful his parents were. He even showed me pics on his phone, of his parents home, including the trophy animals all around their house, from his father's prize hunts. I remember underneath the pool table was just a huge pile of assorted antlers. When a coworker called me to tell me what Shawn had done, I was not surprised to learn it was motivated by his parents money, as he frequently complained about being broke, and owing child support. I hope the Bentler family has at least some closure, while Shawn rots in prison. My heart goes out to his remaining family members, and his two little girls.

After that, there was child support for his 2 daughters, rent, utilities, and upcoming court costs for his paraphernalia charge. He had exhausted his parents kindness, and I am almost positive they had cut him off financially. He saw killing them as his "only" option, being not in his right mind, thanks to the amount and kinds of drugs he had been using. This guy was seriously convinced he was untouchable, and super smart. He absolutely believed that he would get away with it. Thats what happens when you've never had to face consequences, you truly believe you are invincible. When it comes to Shawn’s psyche… in order to do what he did, he needed to feel a deep level of hate/need for revenge. It had to be personal. Shawn blamed his family for all his misgivings, his siblings included… for whatever diluted reason. Stems to jealousy and entitlement, but I’m sure his childhood wasn’t great either… I mean, this was building in shawn for a long time. I’m sure he has some mental health issues, too. Sociopathic behavior, to a t. Zero empathy, but a large portion of our society doesn’t preach teachings of empathy kindness and compassion. Kinda ties into that whole nature vs nurture thing… was shawn born broken, or did he break. What made him break. It’s interesting to think about 🤔

And using his friend's car and running out the gas without replacing it. But besides all that, almost a perfect plan Sean.

A lot of sexual abuse trauma survivors I work with overshare or engage online because it feels safer than meeting people in person. I can’t speak for the poster but Foster care can be pure hell. Be kind or just don’t respond pls.

    When evil stupid and lazy come up with a plan. Shawn was always about taking and not giving, so he took everything in his life worth having. He turned his loving successful family into victims of a monster, and he sacrificed his own potential as a human being to be that monster. For ultimate gain he created ultimate loss and could not see the difference. His small, selfish world could not comprehend the real world, could not hold a dream and make it come true, so he embraced nightmare instead, and could not see the difference.

    It's almost like if you raise someone, letting them take whatever they want, without fear of consequence.. they'll grow up to be an unadjusted adult, willing to take whatever they want without fear of the consequences. Gotta raise your kids looking towards the adult they're going to become. If you allow your kid to be a spoiled brat, and you just let him get away with murder.. well..

  • @stevew7097

    @stevew7097

    @@karenamyx2205 But we really don't know how he was raised. The daughters seemed to turn out alright. Just because the family had money doesn't mean they spoiled him. Maybe from their point of view he seemed to be struggling at certain points so his parents tried to help him out a little financially, but from his point of view it could have looked like "Oh good, now I don't have to work anymore." It sounds like his parents finally saw he wasn't getting the right message and tried some tough love, but then he revealed the monster he really was. Everyone has an inner world that's private even to family, and those that are dark learn to hide it. If they are good at it, family may be even less likely to see it than friends or co-workers, because families are more tolerant and forgiving,, and never expect that in the deepest part of their loved one is an insane depraved stranger and everything they knew about him was just a performance. Psychopaths fool people, including family. That's the extent of their social interaction, and there are no exceptions. They are split personalities, not in the clinical sense, but in the sense that their inner world is for themselves alone, and no one but them ever touches it because they don't let them. All social interaction is a performance to benefit that secret inner self which deserves whatever it can get through the performance of its outward-facing self. Psychopaths are so inwardly isolated that to them nothing is real except that inner secret self, because they never allow anything real to touch it, but it is they who don't allow anything to touch it, they've chosen to live utterly separate and isolated lives within themselves. Perhaps this severely distorted view of themselves and the world is what ultimately allows them to do such horrible things.

    @@stevew7097 Well, do we know what the sisters were like? Or are we just assuming they were good because they were victimized? I mean, I'm truly not trying to be disrespectful. But, they might have been spoiled jerks for all I know. Just because the brother was a monster and did what he did to them, doesn't mean they were automatically great people. But maybe they were, idk. I dont wanna speak badly of murder victims, so it doesn't matter, I'm just bringing up the realistic possibility. Either way, tragedy, should have never happened. Anyways, if I'm being honest, this case is new to me so I dont know it as well. So I guess I'm more venting of the archetype. Which you KNOW it exists. Even if maybe this guys different, the concept of what I was talking about is observable data. It's always a mommas boy type in a rich family. He cant do bo wrong in her eyes. So he has always gotten whatever he wanted. Always. The quality of his behavior doesnt change that, so it goes unregulated. Nor is the degree into which he applirs himself, so theres no development of work ethic. Or earning your way. More importantly, of NOT getting your way if you FAIL to earn it. These circumstances on a child definitely shape the adult they become and how they conduct themselves in society. We all run into jerks and entitled self centered people in our week to week lives. How you think they became that way? Its not random. The same person who will cut in the front of a line because they're in a hurry and you're not as important as them.. they acted like that as a kid. And nobody punished them. A selfish act without consequence has no deterrent. So anyways.. Now, you've got someone that feels entitled to get what they want. Its expected, not earned. So theres no drive to go get it, it's always been given freely, so work ethic is non existent. But they still WANT it. Even worse, never being punished for their actions or placing boundaries on their behavior, they've also got weak moral fiber. They feel fine doing wrong things, and dont factor consequences into their thinking. So they will do bad things to get it, without thought. So... Now, final piece. Mom thought this shit was cute when he was her precious baby boy.. but now hes a grown ass man. And they're tired of it. He doesn't listen to threats or consequences, because they've never made him face them. Hes not gonna go work for it, because no one ever made him. But he is gonna get what he wants. Because he ALWAYS has. So he continues to just demand it. And mom finally grows some balls and for the 1st time ever... she says NO. And even worse, you're CUT OFF. For the first time ever, hes facing the consequences. For the first time ever, hes gotta go work for what he wants. For the first time ever... he doesn't get his way. Or does he? Instead of turning his life around, he doubles down. He says, no ima get my way, like I always do. Ima get it for free, like I always do. And I'll behave evil to get it if I need to, and nothing will happen to me, like I always have. So bam. Kills his mom to keep the life style SHE taught him to expect since birth. No, that's sounds like I'm blaming her. I'm not. I think she made some mistakes parenting, but she deserved none of this. Hes a monster. P.s. I'm obviously being a little theatrical and over top, but I am interested in the topic personally. I have a daughter at the age now that I can see how my parenting is shaping who she will become. And I also have a brother, growing up our parents left the picture. Wealthy grandpa adopted us. I was already going into teen, so I was raised mostly on the poor part, but he was younger so grew up getting spoiled. Always his way. No consequences, no work ethic. And hes kinda a dick now! And stole a bunch of money from my GPA when he was too senile to notice. But at least he didn't murder him.

    @@karenamyx2205 I do know what you're saying, I once had an enormously wealthy friend - he wasn't spoiled per say, in fact he was actually a good guy, but you could tell just through casual conversation and interaction that he just considered himself better than you, not the wealth per say, more like the fact he was born into it just made him a better human being. He never had to work much, at one point he and his sisters were told to pick a house they would like and their father paid for them in cash. My friend chose a more modest house but his sister's was close to a million dollars, but it wasn't an issue for that family. So yes, in a way they were spoiled, and it showed in subtle ways, but I don't think any of them were monsters, and the father did discipline them, even in the midst of all that wealth. He told me a story about it once He had been selling marijuana in high school and his father knew he was up to something, so one day out of the blue he asked his father for $300. So his father took it out of his pocket, put it on the table in front of him and said "Take it. But if you do, that's the last dollar you'll ever get from me." He said he knew his father was serious and said "No thanks, " So while there's a lot more rich people in the world than monsters, it does seem the majority of familicides committed by offspring are over money, unless the perpetrator is obviously schizophrenic or otherwise mentally damaged, but the outwardly passable, maybe seemingly well adjusted, or even a general asshole but still not suspected of being capable of this, money does seem to be the motivator, but I still say you have to be at least somewhat psychopathic to actually choose that path over any and every other. That's just not normal behavior, rich, poor, or in between.
