Eli Stutzman Part 01 : Barn Fires & Bodies

Eli Stutzman was born into an Amish family, but he never was able to tow the line and follow the strict rules laid out by the community. He valued his freedom and not only was he willing to kill to get it, he was willing to kill to maintain it.

If you are a victim of domestic abuse, please reach out to someone for help. Please call the national domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. That’s 1-800-799-7233 or go to thehotline.org to chat with someone online. The great thing about this website is that, at any time, hitting the escape key twice will instantly take your browser to a google search page. In the event the abuser is nearby, you can ensure that you don’t get caught trying to get help.
If you are having feelings of harming yourself or someone else or even just need someone to talk to, please contact your local mental health facility, call 911 or call Mental Health America who operate the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. That’s 1-800-273-8255. They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I know a guy who had hyperglycemia (too much refined carbs/sugars cause insane mood swings). When he was like 12/13 his parents sent him to a 6 week camp for “crazy” kids. They called him crazy. Well this came was for kids who used drugs and kids who had extremely behavioral problems from having been horribly abused (beaten and sexually). They were literally an upper middle class family and the poor guy had never been exposed to even the knowledge that such evil existed as the stories those poor children told in “circle time”. Needless to say….. he wanted very VERY little to do with his parents after that. He went to an away school after that and was extremely happy to be away from them. Of course the staff at the away school helped him figure out that he had hyperglycemia and he regulated his diet. The freak outs stopped. But he was never crazy, and his idiot parents calling him crazy for years made him believe he was. That God for that boarding school. He learned who he really is and has a great life now.

I am from Mt. Gretna, Pa which is a small bedroom community near the Lancaster county line. My family would go the The Green Dragon every Friday night. Great memories. The local lake is a big draw for the Amish in the summertime. Also, I went to a school where a lot of Mennonites would attend. You are right about the Amish not liking to get there picture taken. It is very disrespectful--but this never seems to stop the tourists, who have no real understanding of their faith or culture. They are very wise people but get treated as if they are stupid. as someone who grew up in ohio amish country, i do feel the need to sya that the things discussed here are different in every community. for instance, the community i grew up in / around (my dad 'drove' amish most of my childhood, i spend most of my time with them outside of school) they were perfectly happy to communicate with people who left the churtch, and when they were "banned" it was only a ban from church functions, i.e. mass cannot be held in your home, and you can't live within community space unless it's with your family members. As well, you can't work at the community owned businesses or use community tools unless they're owned / operated explicitly by your family. You could still come to the community as much as you like, talk to everyone, be around your parents and siblings and whatnot, you weren't shunned or ignored. But, i'm sure it's different for every "pod" of amish there is. Some are stricter, some aren't.

I don't know why but I always thought of Ohio as being more of a non-urban state I don't know I kind of think of it as more farming than urban communities but holy crap was I wrong. I'm not judging though that's for sure. Because the stuff that goes down in Missouri... lawd...it's like there's no gray area. it's either like "yeah that was nothing, minor violations is all' or " HOW THE HELL WAS THAT HUMANELY POSSIBLE AND UNSEEN??? " Ohio: "Hold my beer... " 😶 Missouri: "Hold my wild turkey... And my meth... and my crack... And my gun... and my machete..." 😶 🤣🤣🤣

It has never made sense to me either. I've never been able to wrap my mind around the fact that we KNOW we have THIS life NOW, but they purposely make it as dull and difficult as possible in the HOPE that there is something better afterward. Why not just make the life you know you have better NOW? It is insane to me. I used to work in a small town gas station/convenience store in Kentucky and Amish people used to come in pretty frequently, especially during the warmer months. They were always riding in a van being driven by a non-Amish man. The men were usually quite... standoffish. For example, instead of handing me their money they always threw it onto the counter and made me pick it up. I'll never forget one particularly rude man that always rubbed me the wrong way. He just emanated an aura of rude asshole. One day he counted out his money while I held out my hand for him to give it to me. Instead, he dropped it onto the counter, a huge handful of change, and made me stand there and pick it all up. So when it was time for me to hand him back his change and he held his hand out for me to hand it to him, I dropped it onto the counter for him to pick up. You could tell he was shocked and pissed that a "lowly woman" dared to give him a taste of his own medicine. We had a terrible snow and ice storm earlier this year that left everyone without power for 14 days. The first time I was able to get out of the house in over two weeks, I got behind a horse and buggy with a man and a woman and a newborn baby cruising down the road. It was literally barely above zero degrees F and here they had this probably only weeks-old infant wrapped in a single blanket in the back of a buggy. Poor kid.

Wow I read a book about this story years ago but I never see it mentioned in videos. Such a sad story. Thanks for covering the lesser known stories, they are all monsters

There are other vocations, such as carpentry, teaching (as we found out here), quack doctor, probably black smithing...

I've got Yosts and Yoders in my family tree on my mom's side of the family. Makes sense, considering my grandmother grew up Amish and left when her family left the community when she was 10.

30:56 I love that you know how to use 'feasible' correctly & not mix it up with viable (living things). I know it's so minor in your narration but it shows how well you work.

There is a book about Eli. It's titled "Little Boy Blue". This book deeply affected me in my soul. In fact I've read it twice because I can't figure out why Eli did what he did! I don't think any justification will grant this atrocious human forgiveness.

I only discovered your podcast about three days ago and you are already one of my favourites. In fact, you are definitely in the top three (which switches around). I can’t believe how well researched your stories are. I love that you add in your own opinion with a bit of swearing and lots of sarcasm. To me that’s kind of the perfect poddy!

I love hearing about stuff that happened in PA or at least part of PA, since that's where I live. About 20 mins from me we have Mennonites...some of the nicest people I met
