Scrooge (1935) DICKENS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC

Stars: Seymour Hicks, Donald Calthrop, Robert Cochran
Director: Henry Edwards
Writers: Charles Dickens (novel)
This wonderful adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" would have made Charles Dickens proud. The film is notable not only for its superb performances, but also for the setting and costumes which utterly capture 1843 London. The impressive moving-camera photography and atmospheric lighting are reminiscent of German expressionist cinema. Sir Seymour Hicks, as Scrooge, delivers a first-class performance; and he also co-authored the screenplay.

"October 2021" Two months before Christmas. With the covid virus, many jobs lost, lives lost, many down personalities. As I go through Christmas Movies, this one touches my heart. It's the Spirit of Almighty God, as we know, that changes hearts.God changes scrooge's heart. Many of us who families are deceased, I want to encourage people, King David, had to encourage himself through prayer, devoted friends. I know that if I can help somebody as I pass along, then living shall not be in vain. MERRY CHRISTMAS. Love this classic.

My favorite part is always the end when he is loving and kind. When he goes around helping everyone. Sometimes I wish I was rich so I could do beautiful things for people❤️ but since I’m not I give with my kind words and actions. Money when I have it. That’s pretty rewarding in its self.

This film was released 92 years after the book. “A Christmas Carol” was first published in 1843. That was 92 years before this. Now it’s 177 years old. Let that sink in.

I like the Alistair Sim 1951 version the best, but there is something about its dark lighting of 1930s movies like the horror movies made in that time that made this version the scariest Scrooge for me. When I was a kid the third spirit showing his Future scared me as much was The Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. It was well done and the ending giving Scrooge a second chance is always a favorite to see each Christmas.

Sir Seymour Hicks(scrooge) performed thousands of shows on stage. Starting at age 9, then professionally by 16, he built a theater, produced, managed and was a writer as well. Quite a remarkable career.

It's July 2021 and I'm watching scrooge. I watched this as a child with my mom every Christmas Eve and now that she has passed I watched for the first time since then and I'm crying like a baby. Thank you for the memories.

This is one of the best versions of "A Christmas Carol." My personal favorite because it's presented in such an exceptional way. Excellent acting by all. Charles Dickens was a genius to create and write such a moving and heartwarming story. It was first published on

This always reminds me of my favorite boss, David R.Ramage. If anyone knew how to keep Christmas, it was he. Mr. Ramage always shut down the print shop at noon and threw a grand Christmas party for his employees. Lots of delicious food and tons of beer and spirits. He would give each of us our paycheck and then another of equal amount for a gift. And because the other shops didn’t have a proper celebration, he would open the doors to everyone who wanted to attend. Everyone loved Mr. Ramage and I think about his kindness every year at this time. May his memory be a blessing.

When I was a little boy my mum read to my brother, sister and me every Christmas the story of Scrooge. She always explained that Scrooge was a horrible mean and selfish man but learnt the error of his ways and became a nice kind man in the end.

Amazing, some of these actors had memories of the 1800's and were witnesses of the golden age of Victorian Britain.
