Note: part of the lower clocks that we’re seeing here are due to this specific motherboard, not just the increased thermals. With ideal cooling, this board will see all-core boost clocks in the 3700-3800MHz range with the 5950X, so the 3450MHz isn’t actually that terrible considering the form factor.

As amazing as this is, does the thermal throttling reduce the performance to the same level as cheaper CPUs, or does this still offer something over the 5 and 7 with the same case / hardware. Is it possible to compare how this performs in terms of creative tasks / game performance against the Ryzen 5 and 7?

@@potatotree just google "UDIMM very low profile ddr4 memory". My understanding is that they are used in 1U servers. They are quite common on e-bay, i have always been hesitant on pulling the trigger since I don't know if it is worth investing in them + the Black Ridge. Having Ali check it would be amazing

Always interesting to see you push limits. Thanks to your channel, I have my first SFF build in purchasing now. MB, memory and storage are here, waiting to decide on a case and cooling until after the shortages subside and I find out what I can get. I love the idea of a build this size, but since my next one will live on a desk, I think I'll be using something a bit larger in the interest of improved cooling and more importantly, reduced noise.

On some motherboards (*), the Alpenföhn Blackridge will have inqadequate mounting pressure. Some people got between 2-8°C thermal improvements just by adding a Noctua backplate (from the L9aL9i mounting kit)! (*) afaik this occurs mostly on cheaper motherboards which have less components and thinner PCBs, resulting in the motherboard slightly bending.

Wow, didn't know this. After testing, there appeared to be more than sufficient mounting pressure when I removed the heatsink, but I'll keep this in mind for future testing!

I myself modified the backplate of the mobo to achieve more pressure. Extended the hole diameters and dremeled down the standoffs.

I have a Lian-li PC-O11 Dynamic, so it's basically the complete opposite of a small form factor PC, and I still absolutely love how much content you do on SFF PCs. It makes it seem really awesome, and even tempts me to tinker around more with my own build, or look in a direction I definitely wouldn't have before for my next build.

I built my Dan A4 v4 last year with the Asus b550i, the same cooler setup and a 3700x. I've been really pleased with it and knew it could handle more, but im blown away to see it handle the 5950x. Great vid!

Is there a way to put a bigger slim fan on the cooler? A lot of the fins weren't covered. Or are the dimm sticks in the way? This content is seriously awesome and I would really be interested in another follow up video trying to optimize this to it's fullest potential. Maybe low profile ram with a bigger slim fan on the cpu cooler and deshrouding the gpu and replacing the fans with noctua ones. Now that would be a SICK video.

You can fit a 120mm slim fan on the Black Ridge but you have to use niche VLP (Very Low Profile) DIMMS. You do get slightly better performance for sure.

@@ultraL2 agree but he does way more than sff content, a lot of good thermal testing and product reviews, he is sort of known for SFF content and maybe people only see it as a itx channel but even before I built small I was always amazed by it...watching someone build inside those massive cases is just so boring because anyone can do it...watching someone cram top of the line hardware with open loop cooling is just art 😂

I'm surprised you don't add a backplate to the Blackridge. I noticed warping on my board, so added one for rigidity. It helped a great deal!

Thanks for this. Its is good to see the hardware limitations. The NCase is portable enough for airline carry on in a good padded bag. So for me it strikes a better balance for power and portability.

If you swap out the standard RAM for some VLP modules, you can replace the 92mm fan on the cooler for a 120mm for that tiny bit of extra cooling.

Thanks for another great video! :) Would be interested to see how is the performance with low profile ram & 120mm slim fan. I'm using this combination to run my HTPC and it's dead silent for intel quad core.

For on-site event editing this looks like a great idea, throw in a couple of portable screens and peripherals and you're set. But instead of a backpack I'd go for a small pelican case thst maybe you'd be able to use as stool in extreme cases.

Cool test! My 3900X runs at -1,0mV colded by Noctua L9a built into a DanCase A4. With powerlimitation to 85Watt I have 20% loss in multithreadexperience but the noise is okay with DaVinci and the cooling stable at max. 73°C. I am glad that you build such amazing little boxes! 😍

Have you tried flipping the fan to push air through the heatsink and also straight out of the case? Not sure if it would help, but seems like something worth testing.

I could see this used as a VR system you could put on your back for VR, like the ol' zotac backpack vr rig they made a couple of years ago

Hey! MSI just the RTX 3060 Ti Aero ITX! Would love to see a Velka 3 build with that and a 5600x!

Do a complete review with different slim 120mm fans. 2x120mm vs 1x120mm vs 120+92mm vs 92mm. And flip them to get the intake vs exhaust config temps. I really look forward to A12x15 Vs P12 slim on this cooler sub 47mm with VLP RAM.

Did he use one of the siliflex risers NFC-Systems once sold? I've wanted to buy one for some time for a very specific project which would require one like this specificly. But I can't find one anywhere; so any tipps on where to buy one would be really appreciated

Incredible what ryzen has allowed for in terms of power per volume. Would there theoretically be space behind the gpu backplate to extend the cpu cooler heat pipes and finstack?

Now it’s winter, coolers perform much better than when in summer, so maybe a slim cooler can handle something in winter, but turned out to be overheated in summer

Would have been interested seeing some benchmarks comparing the 5600x and the 5950x with the optimized setting, I would guess in most games the 5600x would win in CPU limited games as it would boost single cores higher, and the 5950x would win in core heavy apps, would have been interested to see some benchmark data though. But great video! 👍

Makes me wonder if I pair an Alpenfohn Black Ridge with a Ryzen 5800X, then I attach an NF-A12x25 and NF-A9x14 onto the Black Ridge (as Ali did in his original Black Ridge review) what would be the severity of compromise in performance and thermals? How would a Ryzen 5900X fair in that scenario?

Is it possible to use a larger fan the covers more of the heat sink fins? I think that could help better cooling

It would be interesting to see some benchmarks, or real world performance. I wonder if that CPU is the fastest you can get in that cast, or if a less thermal limited CPU would actually outperform it.

I would like to see if the blackridge with a top 120mm noctua fan can handle the 5950x without thermal throotling in those Sliger cases that can fit it... great vid, as always...

One real world use case for a setup like this is when you need more cores for virtualization workloads. For professional developers working with distributed systems like Kubernetes, having more threads to run your software stack can be a real god send. These workloads don’t need fast cores, just lots of them. This is my use case for a similar build to this - as well as gaming of course :)

Not to mention the noise from the blackridge v2, even with noctua fans its a jet engine due to the dense blades. I'm running a 3900x on a AXP-100 with a 120mm noctua, it's 58mm, and running silent and cool.

It would be really cool (no pun intended) to see how the performance of the 5950x compares with a 5900x. With _just_ 12 cores the 5900x wouldn't generate as much heat and thus not throttle as much, so could its 12 cores being lightly throttled compete with the 5950x's 16 cores being heavily throttled?

I am curious too. In theory both chips are limited to 140w by default anyway, but the 5950x might have better binning. If I had to guess the 5900x would actually lose more performance with more eco modes, but its purely speculation on my part. The only benefit might be you can get an all core overclock higher on the 5900x that lets your light core loads perform better since you lost the single core boost by manually setting the OC.

Actually no, they're both rated with the same TDP so what ends up happening is the extra power per core actually goes into achieving slightly higher all core clocks than the 5950x in the 5900x. Actually, interestingly enough, the 5900x should be hotter, given the heat is spread across less surface area (less rapid heat transfer to IHS) and an equivalent amount of heat is being generated. This is actually the basis for the 5800x being insanely hot, it's given the same power envelope as the 5950x with less surface area for dissipation, so a 5950x will clock quite a bit lower in all core (but not half because frequency/voltage isn't linear) and run a tad cooler under equal conditions.

oh now now lol an NCASE M1 deserves the kinda sophistication of a weekend duffle bag. Likely a premium tanned leather one. Class deserves class my friend lol

Yeah, but where do you mount it? There is only so much space beneath the fins, and there needs to be a significant gap let where the air is sucked in or blown out, depending on which direction the fan blows. A extremely slim fan like this is definitely the way to go. If the radiator itself was designed differently to accommodate a larger and more powerful fan, youd definitely have a point, but the way it is, the only thing you can do is to moderately increase diameter.

You can mount 15mm fan under or on top of Black Ridge, or 25mm on top. Fan brackets are already included.

Built my Ghost S1 with the Asus Strix x570 and the 5950x now I just need to find a way to use the Tophat and meta customs top plate to seal everything nicely.

The Cheap Asrock b550 m-itx can fit a 120mm fan with normal low-profile ram, if you mount the Black ridge "upside-down". you only need to mod the fan a bit by cutting half a cornor off. i had it in my K39, really nice performance, without going on compromise with having to use ultra low profile memory running at 2133Mhz.

Could there be a meaningful difference in temperature when using the Ghost S1, the NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition and the X570-I Strix? Thanks for the video. Great stuff!

Do you still find that the Asus Strix X570-I scores low on CPU benchmarks? You showed this with a Ryzen 3000 CPU in a previous video, and my pc does the same thing. Same Mobo, and a 3800X.

I managed to get a 5950X as well as a RTX3090 But i need to switch from a 9900K to the AMD CPU so right now i am still lost on what mobo and ram to get. (PSU available is a 1000Watt corsair) I want to go with a custom waterloop for the first time too. (CPU and GPU) All goes into a Thermaltake Core X9 case so room is no issue at all. But i am so torn upon what to get and all the options for watercooling confuse me a lot :/

You could always just strap a fan to the outside, but again, that kinda destroys the point of using this case.

One might say that, broadly, clock speeds and cores are, in this case, analogous to swings and roundabouts, although I'm not sure where ipc would fit. Otoh, you could put it in the fridge.

Just FYI, the default power settings on Asus boards are broken. Manually setting the EDC equal to the TDC (95A if you want "stock" behaviour) fixes this and gets similar frequencies to boards from Gigabyte and MSI, at least when cooling is sufficient (had the issue myself with my 5950X on both a Crosshair VII Formula and Impact).

The question is, how would this fare in terms of thermals, performance and noise compared with 5900x, 5800x? When downvolted and clocked as much as it is, this becomes in particular relevant. Let's say the current configuration has same performance as a 5900x with this cooler, then it really wouldn't make sense to get the 5950x with the reduced performance at a higher price.

The thing with it is that with a 5900x it's going to push the clocks further to meet the same power rating the 5950x already has without tweaking. Obviously running a 5900x vs a 5950x in eco mode, though, you'll reach somewhat higher clocks on the fewer cores you have. The thing with voltage/frequency is that for a couple hundred extra MHz above a certain threshold you're pushing a lot of extra power, and beyond that for 100MHz you're pushing a lot of extra power, then 50MHz, then 25MHz, all the way until you're drawing as much as a 10900k for the extra 300MHz. AMD has been settling their CPUs comfortably in the "elbow" of the inverse parabolic voltage/frequency curve. It's really a funny thing, though, because in the most taxing single workloads the binning on 5950x would help it's core reach the highest possible freq without tweaking even despite running lower clocks on the rest of the cores in a multicore workload. At the end of the day a 5900x or 5800x would really not show substantial gains in the thermal department if the total package power didn't exceed the 142w on all of them and they're all trying to push as close to it as possible without overheating. A 16 core at 2.5GHz is still greater in performance than a 12 core at 2.8GHz.

This makes me wonder how other low-profile coolers like the Scythe Big Shuriken 3 would fair against a 5950X if you replaced the default fan with a Noctua NF-F12x25 3000 RPM Industrial Strength Fan. That's what I'm planning to do for a build I'm about to make in the next couple of days, and not gonna lie, I'm kinda nervous. lmao
