William Helena I'd get the NCase M1 instead of the Ghost S1. The reason why is because if you want to have decent cooling with the case, you'll need to get the the large top hat. That adds $50usd to the $279 base price. This also brings the size of the case close to the NCase M1. So you pay ~$330 for what the NCase M1 gives you for $200. And good luck finding the large top hat in the color that you want. Colors that aren't black are on eBay for $99. The sidearm t1, which I'm waiting on, comes with everything I need and it's going to be $200. The ghost is overpriced and overrated imo.

lol all these misinformed comments. As an owner who had both of these cases, Ghost S1's quality is MUCH better than Ncase's. N case has a cheap pop off panels that feel cheap everytime you pop them off. ThorZone is incredibly overpriced and has limited cooling. Sliger is ok but considerably bigger. I'd go with Ghost S1

I was wondering about that. I have a C7 CU and it claims to have a TDP rating of 115 watts. So, I was wondering if this is true in any realistic sense at all (even if that is borderline) Sure enough, it does seem to be accurate. So given my intentions it's good to know that 1. This does work. 2. It is very borderline, so better options would be preferred. Still, that it works at all is a great start. If nothing else it shows I can proceed with my build if I'm careful, and should I need to beef up the cooling, I can always transfer the C7 to my old i5-750 that I currently run with a stock intel cooler. (though stock intel coolers from that era are a lot better than newer ones.)

Why though? Do you really need a tiny case? If not, you’ve spent probably more of your life worrying about this than you ever would have just getting a decent mid/high tier air cooler like the Noctua DH-15 - it’s not like cooling is expensive, especially if we’re talking about expensive high end CPUs like this. When you’re spending over $700 on a CPU, what does it matter if you get a cooler for $30 or for $90? The more expensive cooler is going to run quieter and give you better thermals anyway, and even if you don’t care about that it’s unlikely your time is worth so little that you can spend weeks to maybe save $50 without it being a waste.

This is extremely helpful information. I'm glad to know my plans are doable, if borderline. But it's also useful to know that it is indeed a borderline solution, and that ideally I should figure out a better cooling solution at some point. It's tricky to combine SFF with that though, so... Well, I'll see how it goes. I'm pretty far off having the smallest case ever, but it's still quite restrictive...

Running a 3950X in the Ncase M1 using the C14S Cooler. I found that its a bit insuffecient in cooling the processor at stock settings. But with a combination of capping PPT at 135 and setting a vcore offset (around .06) i was able to get even better than stock performance at times. Im not sure of all the software you're using to look at clock speeds and temps but i'll top out at 82-83C now with clocks at 4.06. r20 tests are around 9350. So it can be done with some minimal undervolting.

Thanks, this was an informative video. I don't currently have a SFF build, but I'm planning to give it a try. Currently I have a Ryzen 7 3800X overclocked to 4.5 GHz @ 1.375 volts in a Thermaltake Level 20 HT Snow Edition 4 case. I'm keeping it cool with an open loop containing two 360mm radiators. Temps after an hour of Prime95 stay within the upper 40's.

Thanks for this video!! I am not running a 3950x in my Dan A4, but a 3800x, which has the same power target as the 3950x, but wants to stuff all of that power into a single CCD. It was bought in the hopes of better binning (Narrator: Meh) I'm running an L9a with a fan-duct and with about 2500rpm after temps hit 75C. To keep this CPU from overheating right on the spot, I had to drastically lower PPT / TDC / EDC values in the BIOS, and the limiting factor is an EDC setting of 55A max current towards the cpu, which the Ryzen adhers to perfectly. Together with observed voltages of around 1.1V under all-core load the max wattage this cpu draws is at around 60-65w under load. This results in a Blender Benchmark temperature of around or just below 80C after 2 blender runs (about 28 minutes) with clock speeds of around 3800 to 3900mhz. Keep in mind that this thing is sitting in a cupboard, so its heavily airflow restricted anyway and I can expect much lower temperatures if I kept the system outside of it.

I haven’t played around with Ryzen Master software yet but did manage a stable all core over clock of 4.1 GHz at 1.32 volts. I did try to push it a bit further but ran into instability with my encoding and in blender, so dialed it back. This is all in a core p3 case I mounted on the wall as, so basically an open chassis. The system does absolutely everything I ask of it with ease and I’m always stunned how much power that little (talking about size) processor has. The encoding I did before would peg and lag my 1800x or 2700x processors, but the 3950x doesn’t even breathe hard. Love it.

Due to needing a high performance rig for the kind of work I do and wanting a SFF build, I went with the NH-L9a in a case that is similar to the DAN A4 (the ZS A4 v2). Paired with a 3900x, I'm seeing idle temps around 68 degrees celsius with it hitting 94 degrees celsius under extreme load. This is stock prior to undervolting and switching to ECO mode, which I will be doing. But these temps just seem unusually high to me. I'm new to SFF builds, so is this what I should expect in a case similar to the DAN A4, or did I stuff something up? I applied the thermal paste by spreading a thin layer over the full IHS to ensure good contact with the cooler. Since it is a serious pain to get the system back out of the ZS A4 v2, I really don't want to open it up, and redo the thermal application if I don't have to, so wanting to ask advice from people that have experience with similar sorts of builds.

Man, had I know, would have opted for the Cryorig C7 (despite there being a shortage of it) for my 3900X and with the Velka 5 case (with delivery dates in May). I feel like I could have probably waited for it.

I installed an i7 9700k and a 2070s into an NR200P mtx case with a noctua nhl9i and the hardest part for the first few weeks was managing the thermals. For a while, I couldn't find a way to give enough airflow to the case to keep it below 89c. After some tuning and rebuilding it a few times I managed to get it down to 73c consistent.

Great video, but next time please try the Cryorig C1. It has a TDP of 140W and a height of 74mm. I would love to see what the Silverstone SG13 with a SFX PSU and this CPU cooler and the 3950 would do in thermals.

Not all heatpipes are creating equal and not all coolers with same heatpipes are created equal. Gelid phantom has more heatpipes than the nh d15 or any other top cooler, but it performs on the level of coolers with half the heatpipes it has. Also air coolers will punish you more than AiOs if your configuration of case+fans it's poorly managed. On the other hand, if everything it's in the right spot, it can be even better than the best AiO. I'm suscribed to optimum tech, but sometimes he pulls out some stupid ass affirmations.

Hi, would you still recommend the alpenfohn black ridge? Planning on using a B450 itx board, and should be able to fit the extra fan on top, but am having lots of trouble finding reviews other than yours. I have found that depending on the version, it can have compatibility issues with AM4 boards.

I'm running it on a corsair H80i, so far it works really well, however 2 cores consistently clock only at 3ghz in a blender render (Ryzen master stress test get's them to 4), even though thermals should allow for more. any ideas why?

Running a 3900x in a Ghost S1. Started with a L12 with slim 120mm fan. It did run well, but the fan was constantly at 100%. Now using a X52. Runs cooler and more consistent noise, but still quite loud. Liquid temp is also very high ~45°C during loads.

It is even today very rare to see anyone testing thermals with ANY AMD build, and for that you have my thanks. I specially appreciate the fact that you have a room temperature indicator. I've gone through MANY very lengthy discussions with people who in spite of claimed qualifications don't seem to understand that their 70ºC temp with a budget cooler wasn't the end all be all with their 15ºC temp of their room (especially considering that with every 10ºC increase there seems to be an approximate 10% increase in inefficiency so a 35ºC room temp -troooooopics- would just by it's own generate 20% more heat under the same circumstances and have less headroom because the 'cooling' air is hotter to begin with) .

Don't forget, temps in a case could be very different depending on airflow etc. In a Steck my 3.3GHz R5 3600 @0.97V vcore and 0.9V SOC is at 50C doing browsing and watching videos, with a Wraith Stealth. Prime95 SmallFFT max temp around 71C, excited to see what difference NH-L9a brings, even though there's maybe just a very small difference.

very good video, thank you :) I am actually thinking of putting the 3950x in my Dan A4. Currently i am running a core i7 6700k which, the way it is configured, draws around 85W at prime95 load. thats around 90°c hottest core at 25° ambient. cooler is a Dynatron K129 with a noctua 92mm fan. keeping in mind the 3950x has a soldered heatspreader, and thus should be easier to cool at the same power draw, i think it should work quite fine at around 95W power target with the same cooler. any opinions?

Well, the 3950x is probably the most efficient cpu in the market right now, at least when speaking of consumer hardware. If you don't like it in your setup, you have a problem with your case/cooler, not the cpu. It would be wise to buy only the cores that you need, as lower core amounts will likely run at higher clocks for the same ppt

I've been kind of curious how hot the thing'll run with air cooling and surprisingly decent. That's a 25 minute blender render which is rather CPU intensive meant to blast the damn thing lookin' at 70ish degrees on those small coolers, it's lookin' pretty good in terms of just using the thing for gaming and streaming. Less intensive processing in comparison.
