Ryzen 7000 vs Low Profile Coolers

Ғылым және технология

Cooling the Ryzen 7000 CPUs with low profile coolers should be "impossible". But I wanted to put some of the best low profile coolers for the 7950X, 7900X, 7600X and 7700X to the test. And it turns out that using SFF coolers might not be as bad as you might think for Ryzen 7000 performance, even against the very best air coolers!

    the question is.. is Ryzen 7000 worth it over 13th gen if Ryzen 7000 in general runs so hot despite the low TDP on non-x versions.. Not lots of MB options for ITX on either side and especially the AM5-ITX mb seems riddled with issues unless you buy the most expensive ASUS B650E-I.. Too bad the non-x versions weren't tested..

    Thanks Mike I love the deep dive into small form factor coolers definitely throws a wrench in the works for the future of this form factor to some degree. For a small period of time the highest performance gear was useable in the smallest footprint just as that was developing into the mainstream production of itx cases we might see this era coming to an end... at least for a generation or two. I imagine that out of case radiators are going to be more common in the forum posts for a little while. My only hope is that somehow this results in itx cases with 360 aio compatibility outside of that one sliger case this area feels rather unoptimized in the current market. I've done some calculations and with the modern size of gpu coolers almost matching up to 360 rads it should be possible within 18 liters of volume and no need for a riser cable. I haven't modeled anything though.

    I have recently switched my focus to primarily SFF builds so thank you for this video. Coincidentally, I am patiently waiting for the N-ATX and P-ATX cases to go back on sale. I also like how you touched on PBO Curve Optimiser. Optimum Tech did a very detailed video on it titled 'Ryzen 5000 Undervolting with PBO2 - Absolutely Worth Doing'. A big tip in that video which helped me with my Zen 3 builds was that some Asus BIOS settings have an extra setting called 'PBO Limits'. If that setting is there for a particular motherboard (noted the one in the video does not have this), it needs to be disabled for the undervolted curve to have the desired effect.

    Nicely done and very useful. I'm glad to see SFF low profile air cooling is still viable with the new AMD CPUs. I'm wondering how much difference the overall cooling of a pc build will make, say when paired with a new gen GPU in the box? Though it wont be on CPU temps as this gen maxs the temp to give the most performance.

    I' using a 7600 (yes, this is the 7600 with 65W TDP) with AXP120-x67. This fan is similar to the Scythe Big Shuriken 3B, using 6 heat pipes and a 12-inch fan. I found that it was unable to suppress the 7600 under the stock setting of the CPU with all cores and full load. The temperature soared to 95 degrees and the CPU frequency could only reach about 4.9G. When playing games, it can often reach 70-80 degrees or even 90 degrees, and the CPU utilization is only 15%-25%. I adjusted the PBO -40 optimized voltage curve (yes, this CPU is of good quality), adjusted the SOC voltage -0.025 and set the temperature limit to 83 degrees. Only then can the temperature be acceptable(60-70, most of time less 80 degree) in daily games. The good news is that I released the PBO freq up to 200MHZ, so it's single core usually can reach 5.3G in daily usage. The new generation of Ryzen 7000 is really hot. This is already the lowest-end CPU in the series, but still.

    Nice visuals graphs, good topic, well done. On a sidenote - probably a lot of small form factor cases need a rework considering recent trends in power targets and GPU sizes. They were made for a different world. So a different CPU cooling along the way could be an option. Also those smallest air coolers weren't 100% great a few years ago either. So there's that.

  • @hwi7114

    @hwi7114

    Жыл бұрын

    Disagree on the smallest coolers not being great a few years ago, you just need to know what they are designed for. In small cases with cooler height limits under 40 mm there are only a few options on the market and the NH-L9 works no problem with a 12400 or 5600X. Obviously it isn't going to cool a 5900X or 12900K and it wasn't designed to do so. Ryzen 7000 just runs exceptionally warm and doesn't really have a SKU that works well with such small coolers, at least so far.

  • @vensroofcat6415

    @vensroofcat6415

    Жыл бұрын

    @@hwi7114 "only a few options on the market" doesn't mean something is great. They have been very limited in what they can cool all along. To avoid further confusion my current PC runs with NH-U12A. I do like air cooling and consider Noctua NH-L9 and the two others quality products. But none of them is great at cooling. Rather "limited". My main point - many sff cases are designed for those tiny things or aio. In the way stuff is arranged within. Which may need to change. Or not. Because in my world 50mm air cooler clearance sounds ~nonexistent. More so with 250W CPUs. And yes, I do know underV exists.

    You can also go lower than -10. Ryzen master has a tester in it that will give you the value your chip can handle. It's not always perfect but it's a good starting point. Personally, just turn it all the way down to -30 and see if your computer crashes at idle (not under load), some chips can handle it just fine. If it does crash then dial it back little by little until you hit that sweet spot. For instance my 5700x can do a -21 all core offset so it runs cooler and the clock speeds hit 4850mhz which is 150 mhz higher than stock.

    I haven't looked at the mid to low-end...but the top-end isn't cheaper right now. i9 13900K is currently cheaper than 7950X and the top-end equivalent X670E boards are more expensive than the Z790 boards (I'm looking at Asus Hero for my upcoming purchase).

    I'm currently running a 7700X on a PBO offset of -30. The plan was to put it into that NZXT N1 that I still have sitting around once the 3D V-Cache CPUs release but I honestly never even thought about the ITX thermals in that plan... Think that puny 140mm AIO will be able to handle it? I can't test it since I don't have the mainboard for it yet.

    Yeah it will be fine, especially at -30. BUT you should absolutely consider putting a power limit on it as well. PBO -30 with a PL of 80w will give you the same performance as stock, but with MUCH lower temperatures and power draw. Watch Optimum Tech's video on PBO. Maybe even go 70w. The silicon is great but AMD fucked up the stock v-f curve.

    I have a cooler master V8 gts with 8 heat pipes. My limiting factor is they are 20 mm thick fans. So i can get past the noise and 1600 rpm cap. But these new coolers hold 6 pipes and better fan performance. It may be time to get better cooler 👀 i just like how air cooler towers look in builds.

    Too be fail the L9A is running into a physics limit, it's just so small that it does not have the surface area or air flow to absorb and dissipate the heat. The cooling issues are compounded by the extra thick IHS on the 7000 series. A better option would be the L9x65 or L9x65 SE-AM4. It's still low profile at 65mm but has more mass to soak up the heat with.

    I know what's happening between Big shuriken 3 and IS-55. Big shuriken 3 has 70mm in height and IS-55 only 55mm, in a case with 79mm clearance, so it will pull more fresh air. You should try a fan duct to see if the gap between the two closes or use P-ATX with IS-55 to see if it performs better.

    Have a dope experiment.... try running the 7950x3d delided, with a direct die frame, liquid metal(obviously), the id cooling is55 equipped with a noctua industrial 120mm fan, and setting the temp target in the bio/uefi to 80-85c with no offset. I bet you get most of if not all of the performance of a stock 7950x3d, running reasonably cool, on a low profile cooler
