RVK Newscast

Welcome back to Reykjavík Grapevine’s Newscast with editor-in-chief Valur Grettisson. Today we finally return to the Fagradalsfjall volcano to give you a comprehensive update on the new activity in the area and ask the question: will there be a new volcano soon?
0:00 Intro
1:43 Quiz
3:45 News

There have been thousands of earthquakes registered every day for the past few weeks, but activity is now dropping. This situation is comparable to the one right before Fagradalsfjall erupted in March, leading some scientists to speculate that we can expect to see a new eruption in the coming days or weeks. If there was to be another eruption it is expected to be in a location very close to the original volcano, but there is a chance that it could take place in an area that is much more concerning to infrastructure and personal property. Thank you Valur, Polly and Art. What an amazing farewell vlog to 2021 and for taking me and probably thousands more across the globe, back to the volcano area that originally intrigued us with the wonderful country and culture of Iceland. You should be, and I hope are are at least, partially funded (like PBS in the USA) by the government! Thanks for showing Iceland's amazing terrain in the winter sunlight, together with Polly posing for her publicity shot (hello mugs and tee-shirts!!!) and the final drone view of the "dead" crater which is so gorgeous and better than any end of year fireworks. Altogether just wonderful photography, staging and dialogue. Thanks finally, for "hoofing it" up those hills this past year for the best ever shots. PS: ONLY because of you I searched tourism sites so I can visit Iceland next year.

The Krafla eruptions in NE Iceland which lasted between 1975 and 1984 behaved a bit like Fagradalsfjall - although they were much bigger eruptions and they originate from a hot spot not an ocean ridge, so their lavas are quite different. During Krafla's most recent eruption, a fissure would open, pour out lava for a while, activity would cease and resume shortly afterwards along the same fissure line. The Mývatn Fires of 1724 to 1729 which erupted from the same volcanic system were very similar - although even bigger. Amazingly, in both cases no one is known to have died. I recommend a visit to the region if anyone fancies a trip to the North. But I better stop - Pollý is clearly thinking 'quit talking about the freaking volcano - I wanna play ball!' Happy New Year everyone - and thanks for all the nice conversations during 2021. Stay safe, be kind, have fun - be like Pollý.

The more I see the Reykjanes peninsula, especially around Fagradalsfjall, the more I am wowed by the wild interplay between fire and ice. Natthagi is a near perfect example of a glacial valley with a hanging valley above it (I believe its name is suðurmeradalir). Both are features of ice dominated environments, but some of the structures in these valleys could only have been formed by subglacial eruptions of lava. The main vent itself has become the hallmark of what Fagradalsfjall means. With its vibrant display of color, it truly is a beautiful valley mountain.

So, I'll always remember 2021 as the year when I knew the news in Iceland at least as well as the news at home because of your reports. The year when I kept surprising people by telling them what the Icelandic approach to Covid was. The year when I'd leave my computer on all night so I could check the live stream of Fagradalsfjall if I happened to get up. And, most importantly, the year when I started supporting online content I enjoy, because I think this is the way to get more of what we like. Now if only we could find a way to sponsor another nice, friendly tourist eruption ... Have a brilliant new year! The fireworks are just starting here (in Australia )

Great filming. We have not seen the area around Fagradalsfjall at this time of year before, with the sun very low like this. I distinctly recall the night in March when the glowing lava first broke the surface here, releasing the pressure as the recorded earthquakes subsided. But I also remember that the exact timing and location were different to what the geologists were estimating. Now I notice that there was a 3.4 at Bardabunga under the Vatnajokull ice-cap on Wednesday, as if the energy for an eruption is spreading, not focussed on a single location. Which may mean that nothing at all happens on the surface: it is impossible to accurately predict these things, I believe! With many thanks for all your fantastic coverage this year and best wishes to all at RG for 2022.

2021 had been an interesting year for me too. I found this channel here and started to love your way of presenting the volcano eruption in Geltin.... (I will for sure write it wrong, so I stop here). Not only your channel, also another channel talking about the other volcano in La Palma. We want to have fun, right? And if we are wise, we should stay at home sometimes these days. So, the best is, watching such interesting videos like yours about the volcano and other news in Iceland and checking Reykjavik on a virtual journey in Street View. I wish you a happy New Year 2022 too. Your channel was one of my personal highlights in 2021. Im very grateful. And I wish you will be able to continue this work in the coming year. 🖐🏼👴🏼

In England we have a game called 'Spot the Ball' where people put an 'X' where they think the ball is in a football game. Maybe you could hold a small competition where people try and guess where the volcano is going to erupt and you could give a prize of say 50000 beers for whoever get's it exact and smaller prizes of say 10 beers for the next 10 closest, it would be fun anyway, I think you should do it, just post a map on your website, you could get some traffic? ;D Happy New Year!!! ;D

Love the volcanocasts! Valur...please watch where you are going...path you are on is difficult. You are looking at your phone and not where you're going. Be careful. Please don't ignore sweet Polly...

Valur is a consummate professional. You can tell, since he is able to keep reporting while the utterly adorable Polly dances in front of him saying "Pay attention to me!"

To the Grapevine staff: Valur, Art, Andie Sophia, Hannah Jane... Polly and all those on staff at your outstanding magazine.. .thank you for a very interesting 2021! The volcano may have brought me to you, BUT the stories and beauty of Iceland have kept me coming back week after week. I have enjoyed reading more about your country (that's a lot of history to keep straight!) It's opened a whole new world I knew very little about just a short year ago. As an aside, your weather is warmer than ours in Wisconsin, USA! I have joined the world in falling in love with Polly... what a charmer! I wish you ALL a very heartfelt Happy New Year and look forward to joining you for more news and videos in 2022! Be well and stay safe! TO ART: Your photography is world-class and those volcano shots today along with the pix of Polly with the sun in the background well... they just take one's breath away!!

Valur, you have been practicing how to pronounce “vulcanologist”. Bravo! With recent developments, you are getting a lot of practice. Exciting times to be in Iceland.

Happy New Year to all at Reykjavik Grapevine. You were the best find on the internet this year (you really cheered up some bad times!) and I told my geology students that they should listen to your podcasts. Thank you, I have enjoyed watching you so much and I hope I can visit Iceland again soon. Take care my friends.

When serving at NAS Keflavik, always made it a point of going outside at noon (unless a gale was blowing) during winter. If you missed the sun at noon then basically you came to work in the dark and left in the dark. PS - Some nights you could see the Northern Lights and hot springs were a relaxing soak day or night.

The way the light changes during the video could easily confuse people that you started the report in the morning and then walked around untill sunset...Must visit Iceland in the winter sometime to see these day long sunsets> Thanks again, give Polly a pet for me.
