RVK Newscast #97: Lavafall, How Volcanos Affect Global Warming & New Dead Fissures
Today, we ask a few questions: Is it completely pointless to try to reduce greenhouse gas emissions considering the large pollution of volcanos? And how exactly do volcanos affect their surroundings? In short, Valur and Art visit the volcano, talk volcanos, and then find out that two vents have gone empty. What will happen next?

@@ETRuT1 In some of the newscast episodes you can briefly see the shadow of the cam guy. There you could see that the mobilphone is simply mounted in a gimbal system. That's why the focus is so concentrated on the narrator even in that rough terrain where they both walk. Nothing to do with being a "superb cameraman"! Everyone with such a technological tool and some training in its usage can produce such pictures. (If one has the luck to be in such a place that is of course!) Haven't seen an episode from them yet where they talk about the job background of the people so of course it could be that Valurs guy is a trained cameraman with years of professional videoshooting, but I doubt it! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimbal

@@Peter_S_ you’re the one taking this far too seriously, lol. I’m just going by the name of the Facebook group set up by a bunch of fans of a volcano. The Facebook group is called BobNation. I am in no way responsible for the name they chose, however I do enjoy the information they share about this lovely little tourist volcano that I can’t wait to see on my next visit to Iceland. I am also thankful for the Icelander, Ragnar Heiðar Sigtryggsson, who setup the livestream rebroadcasts here and the Facebook group.
First time I have ever heard a newscaster use the word bullshit on a national news show. I wish all news anchors could feel so free and honest to use words like that to accurately describe a particular situation. Well done as always, gentlemen. It will be a sad day indeed when the vents close down and the gorgeous lava flows cease to captivate our enthralled attention.
Thank you Valur and the team for another brilliant newscast. We look forward to settling down to watch them and to see and learn about Iceland. It's all absolutely fascinating and your presentation style is a joy. We love the phrase 'it is what it is ' and are now using it ourselves so we hope you carry on saying it! We received our printed Grapevine newspapers today that we ordered from the shop and are looking forward to reading them as they look really good. Best wishes to all the team including Polly of course - we're delighted that her photo is included alongside everyone else. Take care, Wendy and Geoff in Brighton UK.
Marvelous, Valur and team. I am sitting here comfortably in my chair at my desk in Boston, and you, Valur, together with the friends from The Reykjavik Grapevine, have to undertake a rough hike so we can watch these stunning images and listen to your great comments. [Disclosure: I gained a bit of weight over the winter. But no that it is spring, there is no reason anymore to not go out and exercise. But doing that here in Boston is vastly less demanding....].
I could listen to that moving lava crackling sound all day. It is very relaxing and soothing.

I want to say I love your reports Mr. Grettisson, and to the Cameraman for the great footage. Always great information, the long walks to get the news out. The danger you in while doing so. I take my hat off. I always look forward to the next RVK Newscast.
So good of you to catch the noise made at the edges of flows. That will continue for some time as it creeps from pressure or the weight of lava behind and collapsing as it cools and off gases. You or your producer or your cameraman I don't know who is responsible but someone there has the eye for capturing something different than the drama queens, equally interesting, fascinating really. There's much more to this eruption than liquid rock shooting into the sky and I am glad someone takes the time to let us see IT too. I look forward to your segments - the whole lot of you do an excellent job.
No one around there on your visit, like you had the place to yourself. It seemed so desolate, but it appears easy to forget the dangers while nature was changing the landscape behind you. Great reporting, keep it going and stay safe.

Excellent shots of the moving lava and great presentation. Although the amount of lava spewed out so far does not seem huge, I think this location over the Mid-Atlantic Rift is similar to Krafla in the north, where I believe the eruptions lasted from 1975 to 1984, so this may go on for some time. It would be interesting to know what exactly is causing the smoke in vent no. 1: a sulphur deposit perhaps.

There are no words to express how much I love this video footage, and the commentary. I am sharing the material (for example) with a 94 year old friend who was a documentary film director for decades. With him the conversations are about both the technology and what one can do with the technology; the drones are a part of this of course. My list of friends who have Iceland in their hearts is not short; and they all want to get back there to see the eruption. 😁 I am so glad it is being put to video for us all. ty.
Volcanos do contribute to the global output of greenhouse gases, the real important thing, they do that since billions of years, its a steady amount, its nothing that changes much in a year, in 10, or 1000. but as you said, big erruptions especially the explosive ones with a lot of ash and sulfurdioxide actually cool down the climate for a short period (the erruption of pinatubo did reduce the global temperature about -0,5°C for 2 years or so)
Every video the cinematography gets better! Active volcanos in 4K! Amazing footage and presentation by Valur ✅✅✅
