Why is Hurricane Beryl of so much global scientific concern? Inside Story

A hurricane rips through the Caribbean - causing devastation, but alarm too among climate scientists.
It's the fiercest and earliest ever Atlantic storm - a direct result of global warming, experts say.
Why is this storm causing so much concern globally?
Presenter: Nick Clark
Guests:
Daniel Gilford -- Meteorologist and atmospheric scientist who focuses on how climate change affects hurricanes and local communities
Rhea Marie Pierre -- Caribbean Delegation Spokesperson for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
Naderev 'Yeb' Sano -- Southeast Asia Executive Director of Greenpeace and a climate justice activist

The irony of these stories being published by a Qatari funded channel. People are hooked on oil/gas and these fossil fuel producers know it isn't going to stop.

True, though it doesn't make the information any less relevant, and AJ being funded by certain Qataris represents influence, not necessarily control. Still, the irony _is_ pretty funny in a general sense.

Sea surface temperatures are high 28-31C from Africa to USA. And that is not all, waters under the surface are warm too, so updrafts only brings minor relief to the area. This later part is missing from most hurricane models. Models have been wrong about this storm in many ways. Some predicted it to be only cat 2, but it rapidly intensified to cat 4 and after Windward island cat 5. Now it was scraping along Jamaican coastline. 140mph+ winds were ravaging some areas. Lots of heavy rain reported too. This hurricane is most likely only the first one in this season with multiple more. 3-8 over cat 3 were on models, but Beryl's early start may hint for more to come. We have already heated this planet with fossil fuel emissions. And now we are seeing worsening storms and storm seasons. And we have not turned the burning heaters down. Coal, oil and gas usage is at worst state ever. Stop burning fossil fuels. Before it is too late.

Add those with 100-1000Gt (or more) CO2e from permafrost, all ice and snow melting effects, soil emissions, ... But overall we have not reduced the main cause of this havoc: burnig fossil fuels.

I think people in the Tropics have two choices until Wet Bulb Temperatures exceed livable/survivable conditions: Either build more resilient infrastructure (which will have to be subsidized by Rich Countries, of course - and in the most destructive implementation could lead to some form of power over these countries again [similar to what China does currently with "helping" poorer countries building infrastructure and when they cannot pay their loans, seize the control over it, practically taking over Critical Infrastructure of other countries - "economic Colonization"?]) or leave these areas already since once the Wet-Bulb-Temperature exceeds survivable conditions (older people and infants might need to live outside of these "Danger Zones" anyway because of their vulnerability or have designated, climate-controlled shelters to stay in over weeks to hot and humid months!) it will become necessary anyway. So, the compromise seems like: some people might stay and try to build more resilient infrastructure - maybe even new people coming in to assist and coordinate that - and others (the mentioned vulnerable groups) needing to leave already, which will, of course, cause Social Bonds to be ripped apart or at least strained through long-distance relationships, all of which can also lead to a "Spiral of Suffering" initiated on the social level because how these Climate Refugees are treated in more and more nationalist rich countries, seems to also be predictable...and a massive fail of so called "Western Values" (Human Rights), if this isn't addressed and the lies and deceptions in the Western Countries not resolved and responsible parties held accountable. Climate Change is never just *one* (Planetary) Climate - it's always at least *two* : the Planetary Climate and the Social Climate of our Human Civilization - how we treat and look out / care for each other in times of Major Crises, that are only going to increase in Frequency and Intensity from here on out!

That’s why the planet cannot redeem itself, too much pollution atmosphere our way of life needs to change our dependency on fossil fuels…and begin to use sustainable energy that is not dependent on fossil fuels. Carbon capture won’t work. Native America Indians formed large nations some nomadic nations moved according to changing weather. They were great farmers and hunters and respected the planet that gave them life and sustained them.

One thing is certain; they can’t just rebuild the way they always have. They have to really think this through and build ROUND hurricane proof buildings! ICF panels and round buildings and the buildings can withstand a category 5 and flooding. Square, wooden buildings with pointy roofs have to be taken off the table. They have a chance to rebuild right but they are going to need a lot of help from the rest of the world.

We'd also need energy storage devices to store all that wind energy or maybe even transport it across landmasses and store them as well. Hurricanes affect around four or five regions globally, and they're not a year round phenomenon, also don't forget the harnessing won't be dampening so still a lot of damage.

I wonder what the big polluters and governments will say on their deathbed once they maybe fall victim to climate crisis.. Like, 'at least I had a secure job the last few years' or 'at least I could peacefully drive my 5 cars around my mansion'?! I feel like if we all stopped using most of the private cars right now, there would be a massive change already! But some people seem to ignore the actual thread bc they can't deal with the fear and helplessness that would arise. I agree, we need to focus more on community and helpful solutions! And to not give up and still spin the wheel around!
