RVK Newscast 163: Tragedy at Þingvallavatn

Welcome to Reykjavík Grapevine’s Newscast. Today editor-in-chief Valur Grettison (and Pollý) visits Þingvellir National Park to talk about a recent tragedy that occurred there, as well as bringing you the latest updates on Covid-19 and weather.
The government have brought in looser Covid-19 restrictions, with the aim being now to achieve herd immunity. The chief epidemiologist estimates that this can be achieved in 1 - 2 months. Up to 500 people can now gather for events, if everyone in attendance is wearing a mask. Read our latest Coronavirus reporting here: grapevine.is/news/2022/02/08/...
The weather in Iceland has turned very wintery, with heavy snowfall - as you can see in this video! Unusually, there was a red weather warning for the Capital Area on Monday, leading to schools being closed. Since then there has also been electrical storms in various areas of the country, which is a rare phenomenon in Iceland. Read our coverage here: grapevine.is/news/2022/02/08/...
And lastly, a tragic aircraft crash has resulted in the deaths of four people in Iceland. The plane was found, after a massive search effort, in Þingvallavatn. Divers are now working to retrieve the bodies, but this is a challenging and complicated task. The aircraft’s pilot, Haraldur Diego, was a well-known and respected pilot. Many tributes have already been posted online, including from photographers such as Chris Burkard, who he had worked closely with in the past. You can read our reporting on the incident here: grapevine.is/tag/lost-plane/
We at Reykjavík Grapevine would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of all of these individuals.
You can now take walking tours of Reykjavík with Grapevine crew members Valur, Pollý and Bjartmar as your guides. Click here for more details: gotravel.grapevine.is/grapevi...

Iceland sure is a small country, my classmate's father was the pilot, Haukur Diego. I'm so sad for him, I lost my father 2 years ago, and it was also sudden. I just want him to know at least when he goes back to school that I still kind of know what he's going through. It was sad enough that he died, I can only imagine what the other families must be going through too, it truly is tragic.

So sad to hear about the people who died in the accident. Well done to the search and rescue teams who helped to find them. I was in Iceland just over a week ago when it started snowing (was a blizzard when walking back from the zoo) and it hasn’t stopped since! Also got my hotdog and walked past Reykjavik grapevine and Valur was up in his office by the window! Planning my next trip out now…. Thanks again for the newscasts and giving me my Iceland fix while I can’t be there….

I've been following this story on Iceland media since last week and I knew the outcome would be tragic. It just breaks your heart how much these folks are going to be missed. My prayers are with them. Iceland's Search and Rescue teams are really something! In an emergency they "run to" the trouble where most of us I believe tend to "run from" an incident like this. SAR are to be commended for their dedication in trying to bring these folks back home to their loved ones. On a lighter note.... Polly! She's quite the little adventurer! Iceland is the perfect home for her! Even though she got pretty stuck in the snow... she found her disc and came back wanting to do it again! And yet again!!! That's quite the storm you're having there.... stay safe!

I love the snow too! It's so pretty when it covers everything over and everything gets very quiet and all you can hear is the snow falling. Our winters in Maryland seem like they're changing in the same way as yours are. We used to get snow in December but now sometimes we hardly get any in January and our big snows come in February and March, if we even get any big snows. Also, although we do sometimes have thunderstorms in the winter, are severe weather has been increasing as well. Sometimes we even have tornadoes in the winter, something that never used to happen. I had to laugh at Polly needing rescuing but then when you got stuck, Polly thought she would come help! Such a tragedy about the plane crash. I can't imagine being in that situation and then trying to swim and water that cold to get out and then you're wet and the temperature is freezing! 😔

My daughter lost her terrier at the end of last year. He was and elder, around 12 or 13 years of age. He, like Polly, had the sweetest personality. When accidents happen in the American Great Lakes, which are also very cold, bodies tend to sink and never come up. This is distressing for the families when whole ships sink in one of the lake storms (the song The Edmond Fitzgerald was about such a sudden sinking with all aboard.)

The lakes aren’t American. They’re just lakes on the North American continent and belong to no country. And bodies do come up unless they’re trapped on something. Spring comes, water warms, bodies begin to decompose and bloat. And float. They show up wherever the lake takes them.

@@Momcat_maggiefelinefan Linda, do you live on the Lakes? Their depths, and not great depths do not warm. The common understanding of “American Lakes” is that the Great Lakes are therefore situated on the American continent. The friends I have in Iceland, Sweden, and Germany appear to have such a good grasp of geography it was understood to be North America. I carefully did not say the US Lakes because that would have been incorrect in attributing their oversight to one country.

@@Momcat_maggiefelinefan Linda, I would envy you what is probably a lovely place to live if I weren’t 75 and comfortably established in the Pacific NorthWet. Believe me I thought about the fact that the Great Lakes are shared by Canada and the US when I wrote. The comment about bodies not rising as they normally would in other bodies of water cane from a National Geographic video on Shipwrecks. The video started with some of the very old wooden wrecks from the US Revolution, with the more modern sinkings of some of the big ore carriers and the Edmond O’Brian. The coldness of the waters and lack of oxygen at depth was mentioned as the reason for lack of decay.

I read about the plane crash over the weekend. As a private pilot with several hundred hours in that model Cessna 172, it raises many questions as to how a well experienced pilot managed to end up in that tragic situation. We may never have all of the answers. My condolences to all the families of those that lost their lives. Polly gets stuck and Iceland's S&R is right there on the scene to pull her out. For a moment I thought they would have to rescue Valur too! I think Josie Anne has learned from experience when it's a good time to retrieve the frisbee and when it isn't.

When I was learning to fly I was taught to fly high enough to be able to glide to land from the mid point when crossing a substantial body of water if the engine failed. Looks to me like someone forgot that lesson and was too low to get to land, or was disoriented and mistook ice for land. Either way I'll be surprised if the conclusion is not "pilot error". Whatever the cause, I also send my condolences to the bereaved.

Valur mentioned about a submarine which was used to find the people underwater, it was volunteered by this submarine company, it has the newest technology underwater. I had been in Iceland last week for the 4th time - visited the (currently not eruptive) volcano :-). It was wonderful as always (weather was also good on Thursday only a bit windy) Heard about the lost aircraft from a tour guide in Reykjavik a day after it happened - there was no transmitted information from the pilot (probably had no time for communication) or the airplane that there is something wrong before the "landing in the water" as you said. It sounds like an engine failure to an unfavorable time in a particularly unfavorable place - I assume, during an excursion they will also not have flown high that a glide would be possible for a long time. Sad!

They always use drysuits in water that cold. And thick undergarments, sometimes with heated vests as well. Personally, I would love to dive up there. Kudos to the SAR personnel and rescue divers everywhere.

Wow, that is really tragic. If you fall into water that cold without protective suit, you have less than 10 minutes to live. That why people who fly in winter over the sea (like staff from oil rigs) always have to wear such suits, in case something happens. Even surviving the crash itself is not saving you, if you fall in the water with normal clothes on.

The plane crash was on the news here in Australia. Condolences to Family & friends of the deceased. It's interesting that Iceland is having snow later in winter. Here on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia we are coming to the end of what has been quite a cool summer. Out of 10 weeks of summer so far we have only had about 1 week of hot weather. It reached 35C maybe 3 times but mainly around 32C but they were really spread out in between days of around 25C which is usually our winter weather. We have just had 2 weeks of what we would class as winter weather but it is still summer here. We had the same thing happen here last year as well while other regions were getting temps of 40C which is horrible hot. This global warming is creating different weather all around the world.

Tragic and avoidable, this accident. The pilot - however good he was - must have miscalculated, he should have crash landed on the ground. One thing about the famous ICE-SAR - they are all unpaid volunteers, who do this service out of the goodness of their hearts.

I love how you have to jump into waist high snow to rescue the dog at beginning. Prayers to the family of the aircraft disaster. Very sad news. Omicron flashed thru cape cod in Dec 2021 Jan 2022 many people were infected then it dropped off as spring came in March April.

Sad news, but it's hard to stay sad for very long when Polly's around. Kudos to the SAR teams. Despite all their experience, it can't be easy going on a mission with such a low likelihood of a rescue.

My condolences to everyone effected by this tragedy, and all those lost to Covid. When I recently had surgery, the doctors said that Omicron is not less dangerous than older variants, but our vaccinations protect us enough to keep away the worst effects. But they said that children are being effected a lot more, and they have never had so many children in the hospital. Polly appreciated you making a path through the snow, and enjoyed every minute in the snow, no matter how deep.

I have been following that guy on IG. What a tragic event. It seems so mysterious that he seemed to have landed the plane as they found it intact, and no one was in the plane so they got out? I think the water this time is very dangerous.. like um íshröngl. I didn't hear that they found the bodies. Sad news. Thanks for covering this.
