Excellent reporting again. Both entertaining, and informative! I always felt safe whenever I was Iceland too. But, God forbid, if there is ever another world war, you are on one of the most strategically critical islands in the world. When I was in Iceland in the US Navy during the Cold War our job was was tracking submarines entering and leaving the North Atlantic. You sit in the middle of the easiest route for Russian warships and submarines to enter the Atlantic Ocean, so whoever is based in Iceland has a great advantage in monitoring and controlling sea traffic in the Atlantic and the route between the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea. Anyway, let's hope that never happens! Thanks again for the news updates.

I was in this area 6 years ago. I toured the power plant and saw all the hot springs. Also that bird statue is of an extinct bird. Cannot remember the story of the bird. I am sure my cousin Helga (Elfa's mother) could tell you! LOL! Wish the weather was this good when we did the walking tour!

That bird statue looks like a Great Auk. You won't have seen them around - they've been extinct for about 170 years.

It looks like there are plenty of bones that DNA can be extracted from, and people have looked at its relationship to other species (closest relative is unsurprisingly the Razorbill) and population properties (doing OK until the wave of hunting started). No way of knowing how much or what level of preservation would be needed for recreating a species, though, until (and if) someone manages it on something.

Yes it’s the Great Auk. That statue has a mate on Fogo Island, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. The statues are positioned to be looking at one another.

I was helping Jardboranir drilling for steam in that area back in about2005. Seams to be more steam now from Gummukver. Also new bridges. I guess we was walking on the old once that we now can see totally damaged. The weather use to be terrible there. NB! We use to drill slowly and I actually was able to go swimming in the Blue Lagoon while on duty. Very nice people to work with and great beer. Some good food, but the sheep balls and the shark was not for me. I did taste it and many people can not do even that. The smell of the shark is pretty intens.

The Volcano in Hawaii erupted not long after steam plant activity so risk is possible. We are all so worried about the Ukrainian people and the war there. I don't trust anything Putin says, he seems nuts, and is certainly cruel.

Sad about bird flu. as though Icelanders haven"t had enough worries. Very interesting for you all if another volcano develops and/or more eruptions occur at Fagradalsfjall. Had a scare thanks to a remote scammer. Stopped him before any damage was done. My PC has been serviced and updated with more comprehensive security measures put in place. Hi Polly chief morale officer. A sunny day on April? Unheard of. I love Iceland and recommend the Viking festival in June in Halfnafjordur and kayaking in Isafjordur. Prayers to the Gannet colony for their recovery. Love this channel. Go visit Iceland, it's an amazing country.

Just a small correction; Finland hasn't sent an application to join the Nato, they are discussing the Nato and the security policy in the parliament today. Then on the basis of that discussion, it's the president and the government who have to say whether Finland is interested in joining the Nato, if yes, the Nato will invite us. So most likely we want to join, but nothing is official yet and there are no applications. But super interesting news about the underwater volcano!:)

I have been in two volcanic eruptions, one in Alaska and another at Mount Saint Helens, Washington State. The ash was so bad in Anchorage that we had to wear masks for protection and it covered our vehicles and everything else. People had to change the air filter in their cars almost daily, otherwise the car would be damaged if you were to run the engine. Ash is no joke for your lungs either. However, people have lived with volcanic eruptions and ash fall all over the world so it is survivable. Kind of exciting to think that another volcano might be in the works soon.

Hello Valur Grettisson of course!

That looks very much like Valahnúkur - I was there last September and it is a magnificent stretch of coastline - and most tourists never see it. A quick walk up to the lighthouse gives the most amazing views. The volcanic activity in 1226 was especially bad, but no one is entirely sure if it took place on Reykjanes itself or in the ocean - or both. There are some suggestions that the eruption started inland and moved into the ocean as a fissure spread southwestward. The Sagas talk about 'fires in the sea' between 1223 and 1227 which dumped about 250 million tonnes of ash across South West Iceland with the eruption in 1227 being especially bad when farmland was covered in ash during the so-called 'sand winter' which led to a lot of hardship as fluorine in the ash poisoned livestock and people. The good news is that these eruptions tend to be very small as there is very little magma under Reykjanes - but you only need to look at the photos taken during the birth of Surtsey to see how big an explosion can be created a small amount of magma and a lot of cold seawater. Anyway - pay attention volcano - whatever you are called. Please don't do anything until I get my new passport. To miss one Icelandic eruption would be unfortunate, to miss two -well, I might have to hand my geologist hammer back.

The ash from Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991 had a huge impact on Subic Bay Navy Base and adjacent Cubi Point Air Station in Philippines. It was a constant effort to keep ash off roofs as ash plus rain water threatened to collapse roofs due to excessive weight. Cars had issues with dust, everything was a mess. A large amount of ash would make life miserable in Keflavik and Reykjavik. Hopefully an eruption will not damage Iceland severely.

Considering the annual mean temperature of Reykjavík is ca. 5°C then 8° would be an "annual average high," if it was always the same temp year-round 😊 But 8° being an otherwise average spring day. (normal 5-10°) But it can feel warmer with the strong sun as long as the wind is absent

We love that area were you are. Is it part of the Golden Circle Tour. We intend to come back to Iceland again. Covid is still around but we will return next year.

The bird statue appears to be a Razor Bill Awk. They are common here in Atlantic Canada, so probably Iceland too.

I think it's a great auk, a now extinct relative of the razorbill. The last one was shot in Iceland in the 19th century on Eldey, which is the island he talks about at around the 3:30 mark.

Grateful that water was not super hot volcanic water. There was a case, I think last year, of a man walking their dog through Yellow Stone National Park here in the U.S.A and the dog jumped into a pool of water that was super hot and unfortunately the dog died. So as I said, grateful Polly is fine

Don‘t worry, I will come back to Iceland in June this year, so there will be no eruption. I have been in Iceland two times last year and every time I was there, Fagradalsfjall was quiet and nothing happened. XD

Not a gannet. Great auk. It's a flightless bird as can be told by the size of the wings.

Beautiful coast and ocean similar to US north west coast. Beak looks like Albatross. I think Gannett have a more pointy beak. The east coast USA also having this problem. Bad timing because we all eat so much chicken. If it hits California they screen and kill all chickens on farm hit to prevent spread. Has worked in the past but really hurts the farmers. These species fly long distances up to the arctic so makes disease to spread over world. Some birds immune survive but takes time for population to recover. Usually doesn't hit humans.

When stationed at NATO-NAS air base in 1979-80; at our in briefing, it was mentioned that one of the first ways we would know we were at war would be the loss of a P-3 anti submarine aircraft and Russian paratroopers assaulting the Keflavik international airport. At the time, it was considered a probable risk. Hopefully, Ukrainian war will not spread further or do anymore unnecessary damage. What a waste all around.

Yeah, horrible bird flu. Will be here to stay for a long time since they don't have any Travel Restrictions or Lockdowns. Large Group air travel in all parts of Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, North America just as usual when the cold warm winds ruffle their feathers. Too bad for homebody birdies that don't travel...

The Finns did ultimately lose, but they beat the crap out of the Russians in the meantime. Red Army just too large. Let's hope Ukraine doesn't go the same way.
