RVK Newscast

Welcome back to Reykjavík Grapevine’s Newscast with editor-in-chief Valur Grettisson. Today’s news: Iceland is experiencing its worst ever Covid-19 numbers, and the volcano may be back sooner than later!
Iceland continues to break its own Coronavirus records in terms of daily cases registered, with almost 900 cases diagnosed yesterday. Two ministers in the government have COVID-19, and the youngest COVID-19 patient in critical care is only 16 years old. Read our latest Coronavirus reporting here: grapevine.is/tag/covid-19/
The Search and Rescue teams have officially started selling fire works for New Years. Read more about it here: grapevine.is/news/2021/12/28/...
And finally, seismic activity is continuing around the site of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, with geophysicists preparing for an eruption that could happen “at any time.” More information here: grapevine.is/news/2021/12/28/...

I would say that a time when your government quit functioning when they removed the precautions and didn't reinstate them the instant the cases started climbing. So sorry they didn't learn from the mistakes of other countries who had that happen. Actually, you had a warning at the end of July when there was a surge of cases with 85% of the country vaccinated. One of your statistics was a day where 80 of the 116 new cases were vaccinated (July 28th IIRC). Clearly the vaccine alone wasn't enough.

That thin ice brought back memories, one of which I was sharing with my lady just yesterday: I used to love testing the thin, transparent ice when I was a kid in Ontario, cautiously putting more and more weight on it, listening to it creak, and if it seemed strong enough, commit! to standing on it. Sometimes you could see minnows swimming below, or a crayfish emerging from the slowly waving aquatic plants if you were truly lucky. I was never in much danger, as it was just a shallow creek, but it felt incredibly adventurous at that age.

@@mandycleezehappyhour4238 I spent a couple of deliriously nature-enriched years in Bramalea, dubbed at the time 'Canada's first satellite city!' according to the billboards. This seemed to me 'highly logical' as a Mr Spock fan. It's all been absorbed into Brampton at this point, and much of that creek runs through concrete channels now. At least my memories remain largely unsullied by 'progress'.

Enjoy the books Valur - don’t have nightmares! The new ball is getting a work out! They come in packs of three: one of them glows in the dark, which makes it really useful for about half the year in Iceland, another makes a sound which may or may not sound like the spirits of the damned being unleashed - so it will be perfect for a Supernatural Iceland episode.

Ice cleats/grippy boots and walk with slightly bent knees, and it’s alright. Plus I bet Valur and Art have plenty ice experience. 😁

Interesting to see what happens with the volcanoes, but my question is: how much wisdom is there in walking on thin ice in an earthquake zone? ;-)

I have seen Lava Glow on Nar, towards the right hand side of the volcano, looking from one of the cams, you can see it well at night!!

"This seriously feels unsafe", hopefully not the final words we get to hear from Valur lol I was going to say congratulations on not falling over and how did the camera man not fall either, but the secret was revealed. Stay safe and hello from Down Under ✌

Please don't go to the volcano until after it erupts. If you go there tomorrow, and it blows, you could be too close.

When volcanoes "blow", it's usually blow because their magma contains high silica levels. This will be very low silica magma fresh from the mantle so it will almost certainly be a gentle eruption and good for tourism.

@@Peter_S_ this is true with low silica basalt volcanoes such as that one. However you have pressure building up under a cap of thick volcanic rock that might break catastrophically. You also have a possibility of interactions with groundwater that could create a large explosion. Yes, you're right. It's best not to take a chance with a volcano.

@@ReclinedPhysicist From what I know of the geology, there is no real chance of a phreatic eruption at Geldingadaleur, but there is considerable phreatic eruption potential slightly to the East and I would avoid those areas until things calm down a little. A bit further to the East there are multiple systems I would keep great distance from during any activity because they have higher silica magma, and Kverkfjoell did just have a phreatic eruption a couple months ago. The good news is that not all Iceland volcanoes behave the same.

Is it just me or does Valur sound like he's speaking from within a telephone booth? 🔊 . . . Valur be brave you need only to worry it you can hear the ice cracking underfoot I think, learned that from 'Ice Road' Truckers' 😀 Maybe it's my Dutch heritage but that ice looks like a great place to put on a pair of ice skates! 😍 I heard that the daily case count in the USA. is nearing 250,000/day 😱 get your shots folks, it's way too late once your infected!

Oh, and I nominate 4:44 to 4:49 for the Oscar for best short film of the year! What a great little vignette! UPDATE: It occurred to me last night after watching that clip for what must have been the 100th time, that had Art filmed Polly running back in the opposite direction and spliced that in a couple of seconds later, it would have been even more epic and hilarious.

love how people here in the comments are nervous about you walking on the ice. You can't even hear anyting from the ice! I see people in the background, skating? Here in The Netherlands people start skating (distance, not hockey) when the open-water-ice is 1-1,5 inches.

Another top newscast, thanks Valur, Art and Polly. Lovely setting for reporting on worrying COVID situation. Hoping all affected by this awful disease fully recover. Possible eruption? keep safe. Watching you skillfully negotiating the icy surface has left me with a slight ache in my old legs. I must have walked every step with you. Perhaps you would consider wearing a cushion tied across your backside as an item of safety gear should you end up on your bum on the ice. Heaven Forbid! Happy New Year. from Australia.
