I know Art must have wings - his feet never slip on all that rough terrain.

Art knocks it out of the ball park again. Absolutely world-class footage of a growing spatter cone shot from right up close. Well done the pair of you ! The fountaining is quite erratic, presumably there are pulses of magma coming up the fissure. It’ll be fascinating to see how the eruption evolves over the next few weeks. It’s clear from the mbl cameras that the big lava flow that used to flow towards the camera has either stopped, or has roofed over and it’s now delivering lava downhill through a lava tube. Though as autumn and winter arrives, it’ll be harder for our intrepid team to go visit their pet volcano, but then again, a few more metres and lava can start flowing toward the coast, so it won’t be quite so far to the front of the flow.

I'd imagine the pulses of lava are probably caused by the emerging gas-bubbles coalescing in bigger bubbles that drive upwards faster than the surrounding lava.

I can't wait anymore so will be there in 13 days. Been doing long walks to get a bit more in shape as it will be a strain at my age but must see it as I love geology - got a Geoscience degree age 57 and even did a short online course by the University of Iceland on 'Monitoring Volcanoes and Magma Movements' a year before the first volcano began.

I think its reasonable to ban children from hiking there. 15km in such a difficult terrain is a big challenge even for adults, and may take 5 hours of walking or more. And even if there is a well organised rescue service, there is always the possibility that things go really wrong. And only for looking at the volcano that is too big of a risk.

@@naturewatcher7596 it becomes a government issue when parents make poor decisions, and then become the responsibility of rescue services. Its selfish to take that service away from someone else who may need it, just for the sake of gambling on the chance that your kids will make the hike.

@@naturewatcher7596 I totally disagree. Children can outrun their parents. I had parents show up at an event at my home, bringing a bright child with a severe behavioral disorder that created safety issues for herself and everyone else. Her parents were too exhausted to respond appropriately.

It's not fair to normal well behaved children to be banned from the event only because some other problematic kids can get into trouble there. Know your children and decide if you and they can handle the trip, and stay home if not.

Awesome update on the volcano and Art you certainly know what to film with your drone, magic!!

Safety first. If the forcast is going to be absolute sh!t, plan accordingly.

That was an excellent establishing shot at the start where you see the volcano bubbling and then pan to the visitors on the far hill and they are so tiny. Really shows how huge the area and the volcano is. wow.

Thanks Valur and Art for taking us on another rugged trek to this new eruption site. Magnificent spectacle. Understandable that very young kids are not permitted in the area - concerns re gas exposure. Still, see how things develop. Loved the glimpse of the artist's work in progress. Lovely. Wow you tried to make a point about small kids should be able to go there you should trust the parents the parents but yet towards the beginning of the video you pointed out an Isreal family Was hiking back to the parking lot with their little kids who couldn't no longer make the hike and the father was trying to carry them The majority of the people coming there have never been in that kind of terrain or even hiked that kind of distance especially the kids So I think the government officials are just trying to be cautious You have to give them credit for that

Agree. And if you noticed early in the video a guy wearing tight jeans and white street sneakers. Not great in wet, cold weather and very uneven surfaces

Israel not Australia. Man was carrying little children( under 5), children who WOULD have died out there if mom and dad went down.

Thank you for this again cool report from the eruption site. I love your wonderful presentation and the camera guy is the cherry on the cake. Stay healthy in the often bad weather. Here in Germany the so called Islandtief (Iceland depression) is famous in our weather forecasts. I can imagine that the Icelanders enjoy the few warm and sunny days. Best regards 🖐👴

Valur, thanks so much for making that treacherous hike to give us such beautiful views. Maybe, on your next hike include a conversation with S&R before you head up the mountain. Too, tourists hold a special place in popular places. In Florida, we refer to them as "Tourons". That's a cross between a Tourist and a Moron. Something about being on vacation affects common sense.

The fixed cameras give no idea of the terrain and how difficult it is. So many people too, wow. Thank you Valur and Art, my favourite reporter and cameraman. Wonderful.

If they marked out potential paths and every hiker threw a rock aside with each trip your ankles would be so much safer. If I was still 12 this hike would be no problem. We hiked and rock climbed all the time, but now over 70 I absolutely rely on people like you.

@Judi L: The feet of hikers in the first grueling weeks of getting there naturally cleared paths to the first volcano. Then nice paths were made by machine. Some paths to this new vent seem especially difficult with the unstable rocks. Someone has said there is way to get there by trail bike which may be easier for all as well. Better paths and trails, with maps, will come if this volcano stays a while.

I was away when I saw your first report on this volcano and goodness me how quick it has grown in that brief period... extraordinary geology volcanism whatever we want to call it... So good to see you again and your reports after a lot of entertainment about volcanoes and other news in Iceland during the previous eruption. Also excellent advice regarding mountain terrain and the local weather systems... it is the same here so many people get it totally wrong not realising how much cooler it can be every 100m or so ascent.... About the camera , when the operator is walking on rough terrain : I think the cameras have an anti- shake device, so the video doesn't jump about ! Hoping the cameraman has sturdy boots, so he doesn't risk twisting his ankle ! I really like the presenter, his English is very good !😊. These videos are so informative : very interesting. Well done for promoting the correct gear to wear, to check forecasts, and with authorities, before the hike. Gas masks a good thing to take and stand upwind. Roman (GutnTog) showed an excellent path you can use a mountain bike/electric bike on and gets you to Meradalir really quickly. That would be the way to go for me.

Great job again, Art & Valur. I have been watching the volcano at night from time to time and it seems to be stronger and more active at night. When watching on KZread, the camera began shaking violently. I thought it might be the wind, but after watching your report, I think it might have been one of the earth quakes you mentioned in your video. You live on a very exciting island!

The stranded family were lucky that the Search and Rescue teams were there to monitor their condition on the hike. Search and Rescue is free in my country too. The volcano is a sight people dont want to miss. But to risk children is foolish.

Thank you for the walk around the volcano so we can see it from many angles. As of today, it seems that the RUV and mbl cameras are only showing the developing semi-cone side and it's getting harder to see the eruptions. I love your enthusiasm, Valur. and first thing when the news of the eruption happened, I looked for your reports on it.

Looks like it is mostly water on your glasses, but if they are fogging up too, try wiping them with shaving cream before heading out. It can help with fogging issues. Last night before the RUV cam tilted there were some great ejection displays. It was spilling over at that time as well. There were quite a few vehicles at the base as well. With at least 4 drones flying around.

The rim around the lava lake is not uncommon in effusive eruptions like this. Even the eruption last year built up such rims. They're known as perched ponds or lakes. Kilauea in Hawaii developed such a rim around the massive lava lake that began to form in December of 2020. They are still fragile structures, so keep an eye on them.

Longer walk this time can be between 15 and 20 km similar to walking from the absoulute one end of the capital area to the other (Grafarvogur- Hafnarfjörður / Seltjarnarnes - Hafnarfjörður). That's quite a walk.

I think part of the reason that in some areas of the u.s. they started charging people for search and rescue for a few reasons 1. people foolishly do not adhere to the directions to avoid areas 2. Some areas are incredibly remote 3. It's expensive and our system of taxation does not support it. It's understandable that people don't have information or don't recognize their lack of ability, but when people are knowingly defiant, they should pay something toward their rescue. Meanwhile our taxation system needs an overhaul. As for kids under 12 not being allowed, that is correct for a number of reasons, and if you as an adult need them explained, you probably shouldn't go either.

I'm curious to know what the deal is with toilet facilities out there for those hundreds of people... I assume there are none, so are they just going wherever they feel like it? And then ten minutes later someone walks through it? Yeuch... Worth it though, for that view!

It's easy to bury. Use a rock to dig a hole, if you don't have a trowel. Or go before you leave, it's only 15km.

* Looks like the active part of the seam is doing some Cone Building.. Good for them for Stopping kids under 12. You just told about the family that took kids & that was a Good Cautionary Tale... Hiking Boots are made for ~ Hiking ~ Glad you told about them.. They Protect you from slipping because of the waffle grip on the bottom & they do protect Ankles.. Thanks for taking the long trek to show us.. The Cone Building is really Impressive..

Did you correct the time delay on the opening footage? At that distance there should have been a delay of a second or so.... Nice touch having it synchronized. :)

Thanks for sharing ? I followed last years news casts also from the start of the 2021 eruption (March 19th) until I was able to travel there myself (July 15th). My previous 3 trips to Iceland and you made sure I was well prepared apart from just one issue: Airspace. It was constantely crowded with helicopters and light aircraft, even some Icelandair flights flew overhead at bigger altitude. I found it difficult to find the right moment to send my drone up in the sky. As I spent two nights on Storí Hrutur (viewing hill) I found out there's no air traffic apart from drones at night. Hopefully you can talk about airspace and droning in the next newscast ?

I think that Valur should have had hiking poles for that sort of rocky ground.
