Ok, I haven't watched a lot of volcano videos, but 7:48 - 7:55 is easily the most interesting volcano shot I have ever seen. Lava flowing freely from an active caldera into a lava river and then disappearing into the ground again a few hundred metres away, in a dark, post-apocalyptic fog! Maybe mission accomplished? At least for me.

Sorry you had a tough time there Tom - if it's any consolation, I've lost count of the number of times I've arrived at an "erupting" volcano only for it to fall fast asleep. If you're ever in Japan I'll gladly show you around some of the fab volcanoes here, you'd love Sakurajima!

Of the two catastrophic failure states for "I tried to film a volcano", this is definitely the better option.

Nice save, actually. Being a production guy, I honestly do enjoy the "it didn't quite work out" stories and how they get saved (or not). It kind of lends a nice human-ness productions efforts. Good job.

Sometimes I wonder how tom can travel so easily. Then I remember he lives and europe and can just hop on a train to another country in the time it takes me to get home from work on bad days.

As a geologist, freshly cooled volcanic rock is so cool. Not wasted at all!!

Ah, volcanoes. Fickle little buggers. You can walk over that cooled lava. That flow was dead and relatively shallow in depth and it solidifies quickly. You can tell by the texture of the cooled lava surface it was a dying flow before it even stopped. It happens. I've hike 10 miles oneway through horrible conditions only to reach the lava-filled vent and have it rain horizontally for the next 10 hours and only ever feel the heat and see glowing steam. It's a lot more difficult than most people realize. Welcome to my world.

You know, the occasional tom scott video about a story that just didn't come together gives this channel such a nice feeling to it, like a breath of fresh air, not everything in the world is dramatic and amazing at all angles and all times, its nice to see that presented.

I like that Tom now does the "this video failed, here's what I can salvage from it" bits on his main channel. The Park Bench had its own charm but it was also hidden away on a seperate channel, it wasn't something the world would see.

Getting food poisoning on top of that was really unlucky. Really unfortunate.

I feel like volcanoes in Iceland are a bit like floods in the Netherlands: yes, they're inherently dangerous, and used to claim lives, but by now the locals have mastered mitigation and live alongside it with death being mostly something that happens to foreigners and the damn fools that ignore warning signs.

in these stories, you always make everyone around you sound like a superhero. It's amazing.

I think the fact that we can see the video is a reason why this isn't a total desaster.

My guess is that the few times they are heard are predominantly in Iceland rather than Mexico.

i can't tell you how weird it is to go in summer to a place close to the poles, spent a full afternoon, go back, you have dinner, AND IT'S STILL BLOODY SUNSET then you wake up at 3 AM to go to the bathroom and IT'S ALREADY MORNING

These are always my favorite videos. I love it when things go weird and you have to adapt.

I am sorry you got sick. I love that your videos can not go to plan and you still come out with a great story.

Even if the original video failed, its still an interesting story to see when things go wrong. Things happen when we make films and we never know what those things are

Things especially happen when you try to make films of nature being nature. Sometimes, you get an amazing, award winning shoot. Others, you get tiredness, disappointment, and a few good but not blow it out of the water shots. Then you make what you can of it and move on.

And those people usually cannot salvage anything, while a youtuber with a few million subscribers can at least recoup the cost of the failed shoot.

Tom... can I point out the ridiculously high standards you set for yourself? For most people, going to Iceland, getting drone footage of an active volcano and lava flow, filming that newly formed igneous rock. That's FRICKIN' AMAZING! Sorry you got food poisoning. Hope you're feeling better now.

Proud of you for not giving up, the footage you did get was amazing (proud of Bjorn too) and I think the video you did end up with really hits home on the "volcanos are unpredictable and don't care about your plans" point. I didn't know that scifi scenes were filmed in Iceland, that's cool to know.

Alas... this morning we had a tourist couple send their kids out on the lava, while they took pictures of them playing. Thankfully they didn't melt in a pool of lava. Darwin must be on summer holiday. Got cross, too, for being told off...

I live near a miles long cascading waterfall. One day, I went to hike the trail, but was unable to: seems some people stepped onto some of the waterfall rocks, slipped, and then had to be peeled off of the next set of rocks. Fortunately, the extrication was nearly complete by the time I got there. What do we see once on the trail? More people doing yoga on the rocks under the waterfall. Some people are in stiff competition for the Darwin awards.

Its really cool, because the volcano is actually between the airport and Reykjavik. So you can stop on your way to the city to see the volcano. And the blue lagoon is only like ten minutes away from the volcano. It really is convenient.

I would have loved if you went "OH VOLCANO!!" and that was it.

The shots of the ingneous rock were so cool! Even though the original plan fell through due to unfortunate events, this was still a great video. Thank you for persevering
