RVK Newscast #91: Second Volcano Appears & More Than 200 People At Quarantine Hotel

A new fissure has opened about 500 metres from the original volcano in Geldingadalur. It happened as we were shooting this video, so wait for the end for the latest update on the situation.
Also we look at a murder in Reykjavík which so far has resulted in one arrest, and visit a controversial quarantine hotel which is currently housing over 200 people.

The main reason I would suggest as to why you have had far less snow and warmer temperatures is that the Arctic weather, Polar Vortex, has been going much further South into the USA as far down as Texas or even Mexico, has also been going to all parts of Europe a lot further South and also going into Asia,. These places have received much colder temperatures, more snow and ice, plus hail.

I looked up "hydraflot". Ah, a floating tank experience, something to calm the worry...as you were talking about the great concern over the murders. I hope that's the end of that kind of violence in Iceland this year. I'm noticing the windows along the street as you talk about the weather. I like the small ventilation window and noticed how many were open to let in fresh air, even though it is below zero. I would be doing that! My goodness - that looks like a lovely hotel. And the price, by my American standards, is quite inexpensive. I would not mind spending 5 days there! :) It's such a shame that people cannot be trusted to do the right thing to protect the country they are visiting. And only 5 days, not 2 weeks! Btw, as you walk around, I'm admiring your cityscape. I'm a country girl, but I also admire a city that brings architectural beauty into its design. I can see that the buildings are definitely designed for the climate, and are so pleasing to my eyes! I also see that Polly is constantly trying to get you to walk as if you also had four legs - LOL! At 13:48, it looked like your camera man suddenly levitated. :D And at 18:12, looking at the graffiti art. Who is "gron"? I couldn't find a reference online. He looks kind of trollish. The evolution of this volcano is so fascinating! There are a number of videos covering it, but I truly appreciate the perspective that you offer. I hope that the Nature of Iceland continues to protect human dwellings as she does what she must in her own awesome, fiery way.

Hi Valur, a little bit of “volcano” comparison... The current eruption is much like the last eruption of Kilueua in Hawaii in 2019. The actual eruption took place some distance away from the main crater and in that area there was a lot of lava that came out of those cracks from the lava lake in the main crater of Kilueua. There were a few explosive eruptions from the main crater, but the vast majority of the activity was a pushing of magma out of those cracks down the line of lava tubes from the main crater. Let’s hope that there are no explosive eruptions in Iceland.

The problem is that they aren’t honourable about their own quarantine and the entire country has to deal with the inconvenience and danger for it. So, if they are keeping everyone safe, there would not be the policy now as it is... I don’t know. It’s quite a balance when it’s people who are not from Iceland and maybe don’t think about the science as seriously as you apparently do there. Bless

Would I be right in assuming that if you lived in the countryside away from other people you would be fine taking your dog out on a walk , at very least on your own land? I know that lockdown rules are very different in cities and towns compared to very rural areas in the US. Even though they may be the same on paper people in rural areas are not following the same rules IRL. I currently live in a mid-sized city and things are more strict than where my mother lives 2 hours away in the countryside. I hate it so much I'm selling my house and moving back to the woods, as far from this craziness as possible, luckily there is still lots of open land in the US so its possible to live miles away from your closest neighbor.

As far as people Needing to be rescued from the volcano area, the government should do what Is done here in New Hampshire to people who find themselves in trouble due to their own foolishness; charge them for the cost of the rescue operation to get them! When speaking of the weather temperature this is where I find the Fahrenheit temperature scale much more accurate over the Celsius scale because a degree on a Celsius thermometer is a 1.8 degree Fahrenheit. A 3 degree rise on a Celsius thermometer equals a 5.4 degree rise on the Fahrenheit thermometer. A human can easily feel the temperature difference between the two scales.

I find your news talks very interesting! it's so nice to see you walking with poly at the same time, and I'm able to see a little of your country and the capital. I live in Sth. Australia where we often now get temperatures in the low to mid 40'sC so -5*C seems verrrrrry cold to me! 😀Having said that I don't like +32*C much either! 😫. . . regarding quarantine: if ppl. want to go to another country you MUST be willing to comply with the laws in that country! absolutely no ifs or buts! I believe you do have to sacrifice the economy, the harder you go the more chance you have to recover earlier and also it s/what protects you from the threat of developing new variants. 5 days of quarantine is so little! and you certainly can exercise in your given space. I'm sure the SAR do a fantastic job, but there are limits to the risks you should submit y/selves to, I did give a moderate donation, and wish you all the best.

During the last grand solar minimum Iceland and Alaska etc got very warm while other places such as mainland Europe got very cold. The pattern is repeating this time around. Nothing to do with CO2.

Without CO2 we all die. CO2 feeds the plant life and the plants give us oxygen. CO2 is not a pollution it is a necessity for all life. I am sure why they tech kids it is dangerous. We were never taught that in school. If there is any problem it is probably weather modification. That is a multi billion dollar a year business now. The CO2 terror thing is just a scam so some can make a whole lot of money. To be honest a bit more of it would be good.

If anyone coming into the country knows they are required to quarantine then there should be no issue. I would think it's more likely foreigners that don't follow the rules

We are more worried about the Icelanders, they can spread the virus much quicker and to more people than tourists ever could.
