RVK Newscast #78: More Than 10,000 Earthquakes Over The Last Days

Iceland-or its capital area to be more precise-is currently being hit by large earthquakes several times a day. Scientists fear a volcanic eruption at Reykjanes, but there seems to be no sign of one just yet. Also, scientists are seriously worried that an earthquake of 6.5 in magnitude could take place, which might well inflict damage on nearby neighbourhoods. And animals are not too happy about the shakes; Pollý, for example, is quite stressed.

This was a really nice video to see. I wish we had proper news reports like this in the UK! I'm interested in volcanoes & earthquakes and have been following the recent events in Iceland. Valur is really interesting to listen to and I'm sure his report was comforting for Icelanders to listen to. Keep up the great work and keep safe.

After Saint Hellens Erupted the Geologist said flora and fauna would not come back for decades. In 5 months later a 2-3 inch deep bed of moss grew. It looked like a fairyland. The deer, elk and critters loved eating the moss. Deer & elk food is moss!

@Tiger: I’ve never forgotten the woeful beliefs that life around Mt. St. Helens would not return for decades. Did they even say a hundred years? Anyway, all I could think of was haven’t they ever gardened? Proof came when the first green sprouted from the ash weeks later. It’s time for scientists to concede that life happens fast, not in eons of time but suddenly, fast, quick, as in right now time.

I am so glad that you have provided this view of Iceland and its people. This is scary news, but I'm glad that you're willing to show the world, including me (I live in Ohio, US) this look at your beautiful country. I will hope and pray that you will manage to do well in this frightening time. Thank you for your interest in sharing.

And the aerial shots really highlighted the previous lava flows, with different colours of moss showing different timescales, I guess? Just beautiful. But also awe-inspiring, vá, ótrúlegt!

@@CyberBeep_kenshi prayers healed relatives from cancer, protected my family from covid19 including doctors working on first line. I had dreams that warned me about dangers coming and being cautious helped me to avoid or overcome those problems. Prayer is a channel of communication with God, yes we have to do our part to have the best outcome possible. I also prayed for people not to die and they did anyways, I won't discuss the decision from above but I am sure they are resting now. Yes, it is good Icelandic population is prepared to overcome disasters, they faced many during centuries and prevention is the best to do. I'd still pray if I'd live there, to feel safe for sleeping and that if something happens I am at least awake and ready to act. My best wishes and prayers

On Sicily and perhaps the whole of Italy, you can go to jail for diverting a larva flow from your own property onto your neighbour's. It doesn't look as if there are many olive-groves in the affected area of Iceland, though, so it probably doesn't matter.

Thanks for the update Valur - give Polly a pat from all of us to keep her calm. The good news it doesn’t look like there’s any magma on the move right now so this is probably horizontal movement across the ridge line rather than presaging an eruption. Though having said that, the activity is concentrated between the two volcanic systems of Krysuvík and Svartsengi (where the Blue Lagoon is located), so volcanism isn’t entirely ruled out. To give an idea of how much energy has been produced in the current swarm, if you add up the energy released by all the earthquakes it is something over 10 kilo tonnes of TNT - a little less than the energy produced by the Hiroshima bombing. And i would appreciate it if you can put in a good word with the Old Gods to hold off from any photogenic eruptions until I can travel again.

5.7, huge? A large earthquake? In California no one even feels a 5.7.... In Japan, same deal... I've felt worse shakes listening to Carole King's Tapestry album, when I was launching it off the balcony due to an over prescribed listening schedule by the ladies of the house, which had become seismic in its offense, and so, it grew wings, and launched itself off the balcony in an act of a most noble sacrifice for my peace of mind. Of course, I helped it along, but the real blessing came from the force of nature governing lift! Thank you uplift! Truly. And you, Sir, Valur, thanks for your reporting on the situation there in Iceland! I pray you all stay safe, and aren't in the path of any more quakes. Large, or otherwise.
