RVK Newscast 204: Volcano Getting Smaller But Still Significantly Bigger

The fissure in Meradalir is now shorter and slightly smaller than in the beginning, but it’s still significantly bigger than the eruption in Geldingadalir in 2021. The gas pollution is now Iceland’s newest export, but it was reported at RÚV this week that the sulfuric dioxide has been gliding all the way to Scotland.
The hike is long and pretty heavy for amateurs but the distance is about 15 to 17 kilometres. So it’s incredibly important that hikers are well equipped and know what they are getting themselves into.
There is a gas alert for the neighbouring towns and cities. The gas is not life-threatening but can be bad for those with underlying conditions.
Government officials have asked hikers not to bring young children to the volcano because of the gas pollution.
And finally, don’t walk on the lava!

    Hi!!! We are traveling from US on 19th August and would like to hike with 2 kids age 12 and 16. We do hikes here for about 5 miles. We are wondering what’s the best route and best parking lot to shorter the hike? Also, I heard there are no restrooms, if there is an emergency can you go behind the rock or there are no safe place?

  • @peterginsburg2465

    @peterginsburg2465

    Жыл бұрын

    @@anshzeel From all the RGrapevine videos and others from last year, the only restrooms that could be seen were by the parking lot. On the different trail routes, there were no large rocks to hide behind. With the hundreds of thousands that made the trek last year, I'm sure Icelanders had a system. It may be, bring your own toilet paper. And as usual, don't pee into the wind. Also, until a trail is set up, (the officials plowed a trail through the rock fields) most of the area is a bolder field of 3-8 inch rocks with moss. Valur uses sturdy high top hiking boots for the rocky terrain. Good luck. Have fun. The hike looks to be about 10 miles round trip, with 1,000 ft vertical.

    I am always amazed that Valur and Art are able to keep their feet (remain upright), and remember their notes for the report, and remain safe during their videos. I don't worry about the volcano or magma hurting you, I worry about a loose rock or slippery dirt under foot sending you tumbling. Take care and thank you for your reports!

    I know, it is one thing to sit home and observe, and think clearly, but they do so in an incredible range of situations, most of which would make even a seasoned reporter loose his cool. But, each and every episode is so conversational. Things are always made to look so easy and comfortable. That is a sign of good, no incredible, journalism 👏 thank you!

    What a textbook fissure eruption! It's absolutely on form for a fissure to appear, grow rapidly and then begin to concentrate activity around just a few vents which become more active. It would be entirely predictable for it to begin fountaining from this remaining craters for a prolonged period. This is exactly what happened last year, (and one of those vents became a monster); and at Holohraun. In the UK, the BBC was being extremely cruel on Thursday by making their presenters attempt to say 'Geldingadalir'. You could see the look of fear appear in their eyes as the word appeared - and kept appearing on the autocue. None of them were able to do it, so by Friday it had become 'a volcano in Iceland'.I hope that's some consolation for Valur if he has to say 'ash' if/when Grimsvötn blows its top. Thanks for the confirmation that Art is - [signal lost]

    Thanks for sharing ! Like previous year I'm consuming all the info. Last year July I hiked both trail C and trail A to the crater. The current trail is basically an extension to trail A and I can remember walking a bit further and also encountering the conditions you showed: loose gravel on an sloped slab of rock, very treacherous and easy to injure yourself. I've seen multiple videos of the region and notice also smoke being emitted from some of the adjacent hills. I can imagine with all these earthquakes going on, these are also potential eruption vents only the current eruption fissure probably is the least resistance. Have these smoke vents been assessed by scientists already ? Maybe if the lava lake level rises, these might also start pouring lava ?

    Just before the magma reached the surface there was a clear periodicity of roughly 12 hours between activity peaks. Is the lava eruption also showing periodicity? If so, timing would strongly affect estimated rate of lava ejection. The periodicity is interesting and I am curious about its cause.

    Tides have a period of 12 hours. Maybe it’s the moon?

    I have always wondered the same thing about periodicity, as well. Watching Italian volcanoes in Sicily, it seemed they had a rest period, too. Perhaps the Earth's movement causes the magma to 'slosh' underground and therefore it must get back into the proper place to be ejected. (Just a guess!)
