The Volcano: A Memoir (Part 2)

On the 19th of March 2021 a new eruption started in the southwest corner of Iceland, on the Reykjanes peninsula. Although there were signs and signals that this volcanic activity could be anticipated, nobody truly expected what happened next: something that changed the landscape and the culture of Iceland forever.
Join Valur Grettisson and Josie Anne Gaitens of The Reykjavík Grapevine as they review the life-and eventual death-of the Geldingadalir volcano.
In the second episode of this series on the Geldingadalir volcano, we look at the night the eruption actually took place, and how people reacted to the breaking news.
Music by Flesczen: dannyhewlin...
The volcano newscast is sponsored by Lava Centre lavacentre.is. Examine the various volcanoes and eruptions, geographic faults and glacial floods that make Iceland a showcase of volcanism. Featuring new material about the Geldingadalir eruption!

Thank-you for this. The Grapevine absolutely knocked it out of the ballpark with its coverage from Geldingadalir. Art's gorgeous photography and Valur's ridiculously enthusiastic approach to getting close to a fiery death were the next best thing to being there for those of us who couldn't get to Iceland because the world was ending. Josie Anne - you have a great future ahead of you as an interviewer - either Jeremy Paxman or Graham Norton - you choose!

I really love these episodes of A Memoir! Very well put together. The way Valur and Josie talk about this, it really brings back memories, as I was also there during the second day after the eruption and witnessed all the volcano activity before it happened. It was a crazy time and I've never had so much adrenaline in my life! The walk to the volcano was veeery difficult, as we walked through lava fields that never seemed to end, and there were some scary steep hills where rocks were falling down. We walked 25 km that day, and I'm not an experienced hiker. My shoes were so bad, and the way back to the parking spot was really tough, but we made it, and it was totally worth the experience! Luckily, shortly after they opened shorter routes, so the walk was only about 7 or 8 km total. Thanks for these amazing episodes!

Thank you. The eruption day 2 was the point at which I began to watch local news from Iceland.

The way you talk about watching the volcano is right, it's mesmerizing, hypnotic. It's so beautiful. That is also how astronauts talk about viewing space. ❤️

Valur and Art covered the volcano story better than other news organization. Most of us watched the live online video feeds throughout the eruption, but the two of them brought the volcano, up front and personal to the entire world. It was as if we were right with them. Just a fantastic job by the two of them. A big congratulations to Valur and Art for incredible work.

Great report. Wonderful to bring back the good memories. What makes me smile is that in the movies there are traffics jams of people escaping the volcano; in Iceland the jams are people flocking towards it!

Wow! It was my first time seeing the beginning of this volcano. That glowing red sky looking incredible surreal. Thank you for the continuing bravado Valur and Art show in their efforts to bring us amazing news! Josie does a great job of interviewing and it’s been wonderful watching her in other newscasts as well. She is a brave, adventurous soul.

Such amazing memories of following you and the amazing adventure you took us on with the volcano. At the height of the pandemic lockdown this was such a joy to watch and I was thrilled to see every instalment of Grapevine. I finally managed to visit myself in October 2021 and see the spectacular lava fields. The whole period is a very special time, thank you for all you’ve done 🙂

I’m amazed at all the situations behind the scenes. Valur was watching TV with his family that Friday when the eruption began. And the way Art and Valur got lost in their first visit to OUR beloved Fagradalsfjall. When I hear (and see) your adventures, I wish I had been there… 🌋

Marvellous coverage. It's astonishing how small the eruption was at the beginning, with the lava just oozing out from a couple of vents, before it later became more like a pulsating monster. I too purchased a gas mask (in UK), in case the wind changed direction when visiting in August, which was thankfully unnecessary. So I have no idea whether it would have worked.

As a late comer to the Grapevine channel, this inspired me to go back and find the first broadcast from the volcano, #86. I may have to binge watch all the ones I've missed now. 🙂 I wonder how many new viewers and subscribers the eruption helped to bring to The Grapevine.

Brilliant Valur, Art and Josie-Ann. Have appreciated your coverage of the volcano for a long time and I really love this personal aspect of your coverage as you look back. I'm not sure that all visitors really appreciated what the volcano meant for Icelanders themselves, and this memoir shows how deep that feeling for the volcano was. Wonderful! Takk!

Thank you for this video. I followed the volcano 🌋 from the beginning. Amazing. Begin of July I go visit the lava fields and see the volcano with a photography trip we make through Iceland. I’m exited to see it with my own eyes although it’s not active any more. Greetings from the Netherlands.

This volcano got me through my first year of teaching high school Earth Science (in a pandemic no less.) The cafeteria was closed all year so the students would eat lunch in our classrooms, and O would turn on the webcams so we could all watch the volcano. Takk fyrir.
