The Volcano: A Memoir (Part 3)

On the 19th of March 2021 a new eruption started in the southwest corner of Iceland, on the Reykjanes peninsula. Although there were signs and signals that this volcanic activity could be anticipated, nobody truly expected what happened next: something that changed the landscape and the culture of Iceland forever.
Join Valur Grettisson and Josie Anne Gaitens of The Reykjavík Grapevine as they review the life-and eventual death-of the Geldingadalir volcano.
In the third episode of this series on the Geldingadalir volcano, we look at the lifespan of the volcano, the many trips that Valur and Art made up to the site, and how it changed over time.
Music by Flesczen: dannyhewlin...
The volcano newscast is sponsored by Lava Centre lavacentre.is. Examine the various volcanoes and eruptions, geographic faults and glacial floods that make Iceland a showcase of volcanism. Featuring new material about the Geldingadalir eruption!

I’ll echo everyone else - thank you Valur and Art. For 6 months it was the webcam + Volcanocast - what a great time to be alive. I was lucky enough to visit several times - I even met Valur up by the lava. What a treat!

The footage in this memoir is outstanding! Art, Valur and Josie Anne, you all did an amazing job covering this volcano. I was living in Reykjavik at the time of the eruption and was lucky to have been there 4 times. Each time, the landscape looked completely different. I can't think of anything more spectacular on earth. Thanks for this episode and I look forward to part 4!

Another wonderfully produced and edited video retrospective of the volcano. Valur’s broadcasts from the volcano were really special and something I always looked forward to. Valur essentially became a spokesperson for Iceland and our virtual host. When the multiple cones began to pop up it resembled an amusement park with rides and attractions. Literally Iceland’s Disneyland and an appropriate symbol of why Iceland is such a special place.

Another wonderful Volcano Memoir - thank you Valur, Josie, and Art (and of course, Polly). We haven't missed any of your fantastic videos since we first found you in March 2021. We were fortunate enough to hike to Fagradalsfjall May 29 and June 7, 2021, when it was erupting every 15 minutes minutes - what an experience. We have our Reykjavik Grapevine "Geysir Volcano" jackets and long-sleeve tops and love them. We are looking forward to our walking tour with you this coming August (our 5th time in Iceland)! Please don't change your reporting style - we love it and always look forward to Tuesday and Thursday for your updates.

Thanks Josie-Anne for hosting another episode. Last year's newscasts at the volcano were truly something special for those of us who weren't able to make it until later in the year - when it had gone out! The quality of those episodes, Valur's fearless enthusiasm at getting as close as possible to *an erupting volcano * and Art's matchless photography were far better than that produced by media outlets with infinitely more resources. Congratulations. 'It was pants!' - another classic Icelandic phrase to add to my vocabulary - I'll be fluent before long!

Thank you for reminding me of those first days. I look at the valleys and hills and think that now the lava has covered that valley in hundreds of feet of lava and that hill only peeks out above a sea of lava or is completely buried now. Great photography Art and commentary Valur.

I vividly remember the episode seen around the 21-22 minute mark. It was only the second or third episode of the Grapevine I had seen, but Valur referred to that small, kind of pathetic spitting cone as "that small bastard" and I laughed SO hard. That was the moment I fell in love with your show, and I've been a regular viewer ever since. This memoir series about the volcano has been such a delight to watch. Thanks for all those long, difficult hikes to bring us such amazing pictures and stories.

A little over a year ago now, I started watching this new Icelandic volcano. I was so captivated with the multi-weekly reporting on the volcanos progress. I saw nearly ever episode it was my favorite part of KZread posts. Remember being very disappointed after the eruption ended the reporter starting going to other countries. I kept wondering what's going on at the volcano? And I still like occasional post on what's happening at the volcano site. Thank you for taking the time and long walks just to get to the once active volcano and sharing with us this amazing event.

I wasn’t able to go in person, but I watched your videos, plus the live feeds several times a day. I was so happy when they added the microphones, so I could hear as well as see the volcano - that was a sound I’ll never forget, like hearing the heart beat of the earth. Because of the volcano, I bought cables to connect my phone to my TV, so I could see it on a larger scale. 😁 I became like an addict, betting which path the lava would take next, or which part of the crater wall would fall next (and on which cycle). Sometimes I would shout, “You need to put a camera over here!” Like a sports fan yelling at the coach, right? 🤣 It was so fascinating seeing all the changes and shifts in the lifecycle of this volcano system. ♥️♥️♥️ Thank you so much for all of your reporting along the way. It helped me to understand all of the live feeds I was watching. 👍

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the journey you have taken us during the volcano’s eruptions and lava flow. Thank goodness such an event has occurred in Australia for many years. The photography and narration have been amazing. We were thankful that KZread directed us to your site and continue to enjoy your comments and of course Polly. Best wishes.

Third episode of this series of volcano reminiscences is a joy - as were the first two. Josie's intro is spot on. This interview style presentation really works. Valur, sharing your experiences of this spectacular event gives a special depth to the broadcasts of the eruption. AND new video too. Beautiful camera work from Art. capturing the rawness and power of the volcano and lava flows. Many thanks. Bless you all at the Grapevine.

The eruption was very exciting, particularly because it did not threaten anything, so it was just putting on an exceptional show! It was how I came across you, um, actually, how I learned of Polly. It made her famous 🤗

Thanks to covid and this event, I finally know what "binge-watching" is. I have been fascinated with volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis for many years, but this was my first opportunity to get my fill of an ongoing eruption and it was amazing to watch you and Art...and Polly...cover this event so thoroughly. I was addicted and sad to see it end for now. It also ushered in a new way to keep up with similar events, so we went directly into 24/7 coverage at La Palma and Etna, and now also have live coverage of Stromboli. What bliss! Finally, I cherish my "Don't walk on the lava" t-shirt but feel you are wasting an opportunity to make a few krona more...with a t-shirt featuring Polly! Thanks for your hard work and great coverage of all things Icelandic.

In two weeks I will be in Iceland for a photography trip and we will visit the volcano on our last day, 2 July. I will see it with my own eyes, how amazing it is. Greetings from the Netherlands.

I'm so disappointed yo learn that Poly has been chanded by reading her own press clippings, just like Hollywood celebrities. Never mind that dogs aren't supposed to read at all. Has someone else been reading her rave reviews to her? Josie Ann, is it you? Is it too late to hope she'll be a modest sweet dog again?
