The Volcano: A Memoir (Part 4)

This episode was filmed in February and June 2022.
On the 19th of March 2021 a new eruption started in the southwest corner of Iceland, on the Reykjanes peninsula. Although there were signs and signals that this volcanic activity could be anticipated, nobody truly expected what happened next: something that changed the landscape and the culture of Iceland forever.
Join Valur Grettisson and Josie Anne Gaitens of The Reykjavík Grapevine as they review the life-and eventual death-of the Geldingadalir volcano.
In the fourth episode of this series on the Geldingadalir volcano, we go over the last days of the volcano on Geldingadalir and then visit the old crater.
Music by Flesczen: dannyhewlin...
The volcano newscast is sponsored by Lava Centre lavacentre.is. Examine the various volcanoes and eruptions, geographic faults and glacial floods that make Iceland a showcase of volcanism. Featuring new material about the Geldingadalir eruption!

Me too! I loved the scientific knowledge displayed on some of the websites of the volcano. Sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide etc. Fell in love with Iceland and of course, the newscasts from Valur, Art's cinematography, and of course, Polly.. I especially enjoy Valur's walk abouts in Reykjavik so I can see the shops and scenery.

@@pamelakuhlman8481 "Just Icelandic" is another great channel. His "10 things not to do when visiting Iceland" is hilarious. I have worked with a few Icelanders, and have assumed that they had master degree levels of dry humor and irony taught at university, but didn't realize that they also had such photography talents. Of course having such good material with low light angles helps :)

The volcano is dead, long live the volcano! Thanks to Josie, Art, Valur and all who made the hike to report from the volcano, and thanks for such a lovely documentary :) In the end, Valur turned the Champagne into a little volcano!

The Reykjavik Grapevine photography is pretty amazing and continues to impress. I watch KZread pretty much all day every day, but this show seems singularly unique in its format, showcasing the rhythm of life in Iceland. It is not just commentary, it is not just landscapes, but it has an almost interactive feel.

Brilliant end to a brilliant series! We've loved the newscasts since the beginning, and the volcano coverage ended up being the icing on the cake until we could (finally!) get there in person - Art's camera work has been incredible, a real joy to behold, award winning in our eyes. And in this video, the drone footage of the empty crater, then zooming slowly out to the surroundings, I was blown away by how shallow of an upturned boat the Gónholl 'viewing hill' is now - when I remember what a big deal it was to climb (esp in the wind!) when there was so much more of it above ground (as it were!) back in May, before it was cut off by the lava overrunning the saddle! Incredible sense of perspective and the concept of just how deep that lava field is. Hiking along to the Meradalir eruption (luckily just before it ended!) & seeing the back view of the No.5 cone was incredible, it's just so striking, hulking on the horizon there. (Sorry for such a long reminiscence!)🥂 Skál!

What a lovely reminisce! I put my chunk of the Geldingadalir lava up on my laptop so she could also watch and remember. Loved the light shining on you two during the sofa chat. And it was fascinating to see and to hear the narration about what the lava fields are like a year on. The explosive champagne - perfect! 😂 And Art's footage - wowow!

Thank you for your amazing coverage. Sharing your adventures about the volcano will be something I’ll always remember, being locked down at home in the UK through the pandemic the eruption was essential viewing. I finally came to Iceland in Oct 2021 just after the eruption had ended, to visit the lava fields and actually be there in person was just as spectacular and felt very special.

I was September 23 to the volcano’s with a photography trip. It was planned to see the eruption of the Meradalir but it stopt on August 21. But I liked it very much to see both in real. What amazing to see you walking on the lava and how big the cracks are and the colors. But you had still be careful. Thank you for this video. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Perfect way to wrap up the Volcano Series. Loved the Champagne Bursting out. I agree with Josie that was a fitting way to honor the Volcano. “ Bob” made quite an impact, in more ways than one. Thank You Art for all the Incredible video you’ve taken of both volcanos. Thank You Valur, for walking us through this, The life of the 2021 eruption. I learned quite a lot and came out with a heightened Respect for The Nature. Thanks also, for putting the video clips of when the Meradalir Volcano erupted. Her appearance may have been short but reminded us that there will be more activity to come. Sooner rather than Later? We shall see … Josie, great job on doing this documentary. Tell your Boss, that you earned a raise! 😉 Can’t wait to see what happens next. Love to Pollý.

Thank you all for this series. I have totally enjoyed the time of the eruption. I was hooked to my laptop watching al the webcams, try to read the Icelandic news with the funny google translations and of course watched the Newscast with the beautiful videos from Art. I became a member of the Bob nation group. A very enthusiastic group from over the whole world. It was a great help during the Covid period with al the restrictions. I am very curious what wil happen next. It is clear that Reykjanes peninsula has waken up, but there are also other systems that want attention it seems. So interesting times. Thank you all.
