Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. My first 100 mile thoughts, impressions and review.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I recently picked up my Himalayan 450 from my local dealer. This is my first 100 mile review sharing my thoughts and impressions. How dose it compare to the 411 Himalayan.

Great review and same feedback as I felt after my test ride, coming 'down' from a bmw R1200RS there is nothing making me question my decision to order mine and looking forward to the delivery, hopefully this month. No problems with sidestand, weight of bike and comfort, again having the seat in high position is best for me. The tubeless versions are seeming to be the last to get to market but worth the wait. Acccessories already ordered from India at a good price and this is going to be a good 2nd bike!

Can you find out if you can buy a 10 tooth smaller rear sprocket? It sounds like it needs a 10 tooth reduction for people who live in North America, who are doing 99% road riding in the city and highway. I want to be able to go on fire roads, and gravel roads (no steep hill climbs or heavy brush). I'd like to have the gear ratios to cruise at 60mph with no vibration. The 450 does appear to be geared unnecessarily low, which is why it vibrates. The engine produces nearly peak torque starting at 3,000 rpms, so it shouldn't be revved up to 6,000 rpms at highway speeds. The other bikes like the Transalp 750 are also geared horrendously low. Even the Harley Pan America is turning about 4,500 rpms at 60mph, which is just comically low geared. The GS1250 is geared super low, and the Chinese CF Moto 450 is geared so low it won't even hold 70mph. The point is, we are living in the dark ages for motorcycle gear ratios---none of the bikes today have a proper overdrive gear.

Hey up. I took a demo out, made quite a long video, I just didn’t want to take it back. A brilliant machine, and I totally agree, about people comparing it to the 411. It’s totally different, but I guess it’s just like all those people moaning that the Classic 350 should be fitted with a kickstart, like the “original”. Some people find it really hard to accept that RE are moving with the times, and making a damn good job of it too. They don’t take a generic style and slightly adapt it, oh no, they do it their own way, from the ground up, then use that platform to create other masterpieces. I am eagerly awaiting the “Guerrilla 450”, which looks to be a more road focused machine, based on this 450. Great “early days” review, have subscribed to see how you continue to get on with the Himi 450. All the best 😊

Really appreciate you taking the time out to share your thoughts. The motorcycle world is getting more advanced and improving all the time. RE have got this absolutely spot on, and there is something for everyone. As you say the 450 is built from the ground up, and I'm really looking forward to where this engine will sit in their new and existing bikes. Many thanks Mike

I’ve had my 452 for a few weeks now - first service next week. I almost bought a NX500 and had some angst about going for the Himalayan, but I can tell you I am now 100% certain I’ve made the right choice. I absolutely love this bike. My other bike is a Harley Davidson Ultra, which leans just as far on the side stand and literally weighs over half a ton when me, the missus and all our luggage get on board, so I have no worries at all about the weight of the 452. But I can tell you with certainty, the 452 is waaay more fun than the Harley!

Enjoyed your video and agree that quite a few KZread bike reviewers whinge about quite pointless things and make ridiculous comparisons, maybe they should stick with a car or just get the bus. I test rode one of these about 2 weeks ago and really liked everything about it, especially the looks. The engine is strong through the rev range and doesn't feel or sound stressed even under load. It does lean over a bit on the side stand but so what and on some cambers that can be of benefit, I have the opposite issue on my BMW R1200R ...... you just get used to it and park up accordingly. I've had quite a few different bikes over the years and this 450 is as well finished and put together as anything else I've had. Bought a Hunter 350 a year ago and love it to bits but it might have to go .....??? Enjoy your new Himalayan ...... I am a bit jealous 😁 All the best, Phil (Somerset)

Totally agree with all your comments: screen, sidestand, weight, etc. Smiles for miles: .it's a bargain. Was close to ordering an NX 500 before my Himi test ride, now just waiting for someone to machine a lowering kit before I place an order. I know there is a lower seat option, but nobody can confirm if it's just got less padding and will thrrefore compromise the comfort. Great review dedpite the wobbly audio.

Apparently this bike will rev 8000 to 9000, I've kept it under 4000rph and the power is more than adequate. I will do an update on the power at higher revs when I hit 600 miles. Many thanks Mike

All I can say is that people better not complain about a bike being top heavy, because then they are going to give you a plastic gas tank and giant fuel bulbs like the horrendous KTM 890. Yes, the low center of gravity of "fuel bladders" is nice, but it's an abomination. Without a conventional fuel tank, you can't use a magnetic tank bag. Be glad that the Royal Enfield has a steel fuel tank, because it's one of the best looking motorcycles ever made.
