I think the charger is faced away from the vehicle so that it’s facing YOU when you are facing the vehicle. Also, it looks like it’s a straighter plug into the vehicle without rotating the handle around. This might make it easy to manhandle the cables, particularly in cold weather.

Good points. I was thinking you’re facing your vehicle as you look at it, so ok I see that. But when you pull into a spot it’s the most confusing from inside the vehicle. Thanks for the comments.

Did you try calling them? They can reboot remotely. It's also a great practice as if they're unaware they'll dispatch someone to fix it in case this can't be resolved remotely

Hi Mark, my experience has been turn the heat on in the cabin it will warm the battery. Even better is if you can plug into 110v to keep the battery warm. That does two things I really like. You will start warm which helps fight the cold temps that reduce efficiency and range. Second if you go to fast charger in short distance like you did it will charge FAST. I have used the Truckee charger a lot and tested in the cold. Single digits and 30 min of pre conditioning was still not enough for peak charging, but I did get 100kw. I have tested the 110v twice now in zero degree temps and then went to an EA charger. Slow not plugged into 110v got 27kw until warm. The next night I left plugged in 110v then next morning ramped up right away. EVs take planning which most don't like doing. Appreciate your videos as many will learn from this.

That is very interesting, thanks Matt. So your'e plugging into your home/cabin with the slow, level 1, 110v charger that comes with the vehicle, which is so super slow it doesn't really add much range, but it keeps your batteries warm overnight? That is a very clever plan. I will try that!

Thanks Scott for chiming in. Tell me about that Phoenix trip when we see each other. I think you'll be ok on this trip. There are plenty of non-Rivian but fast chargers coming up the Central Coast/Valley, then you can hit these Rivian chargers in Sac and Tahoe, and It looks like one prior to Sac in Manteca. Have a good trip! Let me know how it goes

Nice. I was just there at the Sacramento REI RAN. FYI, You can drag down your navigation it will tell you all your charging stops and charging time of each stop without exiting your trip navigation.

I hope you reported the issue to Rivian. I found a few chargers down with error at Rivian Manteca. While charging I called Rivian and rebooted those error chargers and they were fixed by the time another Rivian drove in to charge.

Thanks Mark. You did answer a question I had about not being able to navigate to a charger while navigating to a destination. Question--how did the regen work on the trip back down toward Sacramento? What kind of efficiency did you see? The only long downhill stretch for me has been down Cuesta grade into San Luis Obispo. Thx.

I should have recorded the numbers to support this... but I saw really, really good range coming home. When we head up to Tahoe, we technically can do it without stopping, but it cuts it really close, like 10-30 miles remaining, so we always stop for a 15 min charge on the way up. On the way home, I NEVER stop for a charge. Last weekend I left South Lake Tahoe with 95% range, and arrived home (East Bay near OAK) with 108 miles remaining, and that was me going 75+ MPH. The first hour, when regen was in full effect coming down the mountain, it was as if I was barely consuming any battery. I'll have to capture that the next time. Pretty cool

I was at the Sacramento REI adventure chg. station, yes they are backwards, but fast and the store is great.

It is a great stop, i make it even when I dont need to, so I can buy some toys I dont really need :)

Will be nice to see the RAN extend to the Eastern part of the US. We only have the 11kwh Rivian destination chargers here in TN at this time… They have partnered with our state parks which is great but no help on road trips.

They used to be different charge network, still free, Rivian took them over (and some at other NPs also.)

So one of the main charging issues our R1Ts are having is not being able to sustain the 200+ kW charging due to overheating and need to throttle significantly to cool the battery. It looks like you were in a mid range SOC when you started, so the normal throttling around 60% started before it overheated. All of the pros out there say the RAN units will be no different then the 3rd party DCFCs because it is the truck asking for those higher peaks. I'm curious if anyone can comment on their experience when using a RAN at a lower SOC where they went right to 200+kW and how long it was able to sustain that before overheating vs a 3rd party charger.

I think we're saying the same thing; all EVs have to throttle down their charge rate as the battery fills up, the vehicle controls that not the charger. But Rivian as compared to Tesla holds the faster charge speed longer through the charge period, so I have appreciated that

Looks like nav thought you go from sacto to truckee and have 104 mils remaining (15:39) but you actually had 121 (17:25, subtracting 3mi added in charge session). Am I reading that correctly? That means rivian trip calculator handled elevation prediction really well.

In my Teslas I have sped preconditioning on cold mornings when going a shorter distance by running the heat and pre-warming the car. ?Same in the Rivian.

Richard, next time I am there, in 2 weeks, I will have the car's internal temp start warming a solid hour before I come down in the morning, see what that does.

Hi, I also have same question like Vinny or concern , max pack with quad on order since no more quad thinking to switch to R1S have 2 kids both pretty tall and was keeping max pack order only valuable on R1T but really want quad and having Tesla Y also and going on vacation was little bit cramped for 4 adults. Guess my question is R1T roomy for 4 adults on longer trips .

I would not wait for the quad, and not worry about having "just" 294 miles of range (which is what I get with the 20" rims). And this cabin is far, far bigger than the interior of your model Y (I have one of those too). This truck is all we use now on all our trips, or in fact really any time the family goes anywhere together. Lots of space. As for R1T vs R1S... both are great. I get more use out of the truck bed and the gear tunnel in the R1T than I would that 3rd row of the R1S, so for me the R1t makes the most sense. Pull the trigger!

Heh. Small world. I've charged my Model Y at the REI in Sac several times now. Love it. Very fast L2 charger as it's 242/3 voltage as compared to many businesses which have voltage around 200. I've never had any problem with starting up charging. Never needed to plug it in a few times to start it. It started for me immediately each time. I have a R1S on order so I don't feel bad using Rivian chargers to charge up the Y. 😂😂🤣🤣 Enjoy the free charging while it lasts. My understanding is that Rivian is going to start charging Rivian owners in April 2023 to charge on their network. I feel jipped as I won't be getting my R1S delivered probably for another 2 years.

Thanks for the story. Keep charging there, Rivian doesnt mind, I'm pretty sure of that, nor do Rivian owners. I bet the majority of Rivian owners are also former or current Tesla owners as well. I myself have a model y, and previously owned a model 3, so Teslas and Rivans to me are part of the same brotherhood. And I think you'll have it faster than you think. I hope you're in the R1T by years end!

I grew up in Vacaville and my family is still there...where are you at?

We're in the East Bay, along the Bay. So Tahoe for us is 3.5 hrs away, sometimes 3 if we're hauling

I was reviewing my photos from the first meet & greet up in Marin and the charging port was on the front right hand side of the vehicle . . . could be that it was changed to the left side, but the charging stations were already planned 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey man, are you still happy with your r1T? I have the max pack enhanced dual motor reservation. Is the bed size any issue for you to the size of the cab comfortable compared to larger truck cabs?

Super happy. Battery and range are good enough for me and the trips we do around California. The bed size works for me, when you drop the tailgate you get extra length and its no problem putting in a sheet of plywood at 8' long. With the tailgate up, putting in a long snowboard means I have to go a bit diagonal, but I would not wish this truck to be longer, I appreciate the over length is not excessive. And the cabin is PLENTY roomy for the family of 5.

Like a champ! I felt very secure. Only times I got wiggly was when I yanked my foot off the accelerator and kicked in the Regen too fast. I was just being lazy and not paying attention, if you pull your foot back slowly like you would apply the brake in snow, you'll be fine. And it you put it into Snow mode, that truck adjust some of the regen for you.

My wife and I very much enjoy your videos Mark. We took her Rivian on a recent snow trip and were also perplexed at the orientation of the charge screen to the car. Felt awkward as the owner of the RT1 in the next stall was watching me, probably wondering if I’m going to hit her truck with the cable wire or rub up on it 😅.

I was lucky each of my 3 charges to not have a vehicle next to me. You’re so right, it would feel awkward standing up against another vehicle. Glad you enjoy the videos. I’m trying to get more out, and make them shorter.

I think the rivian network is showing correctly and here's why. The 3 chargers are up. The network isn't telling you that 1 is in use while the other 2 are not. It's telling the user there are 3 aviable because they are live. Not that their in use. I think the delevoper said we can give them what systems are up and how many but we haven't got a way to determine which one is in use or by whome at least not yet.. So it's correct 3 are aviable two are having issues. But there's no turn around of what is in use and by who. So that could come in an update. But it's not completely wrong it's just not determine the end users information to say 1 is in use just that 3 are there and can be used. Hope that makes sense. And to think about it I would always want to know the entire count of available but not in use chargers. If Rivian would build a small sub menu so when you tap on the 3 avaivle a modal pop displays current number of chargers then how many in use that would be a nice add on I think. This way you can see how many are they, how many are in use, and how many are out of order. Just a thought.

You are right, there are lots of ways this can be improved, and I expect that to happen. Rivian, and Tesla, do a great job of continuous innovation. I bet we see some of those things soon.

Thanks for the great video Mark. Also an R1T owner. I was not aware the Truck will have the ability to charge at 300KW with an udpdate? If so that is awesome!

That would mean 750A delivered through a CCS1 port, which if you are following CCS1 standard is limited to 500A. Nothing says they can’t go beyond 500A for their Charger with their vehicle but I’ll believe it when I see it. Don’t get your hopes up.

Is there an option on the app to report stations that are marked as working but actually aren't?

I didnt see it, but maybe if you click into an actual station in your phone app, but I'd have to try it. But nothing that I see on the vehicle screen.

Do you know range affect of a hitch mounted bike carrier with 20' inch rims at highway speeds? Driving from San Diego to Park City with two bikes mounted on the hitch.

If it were on my Model Y, the impact would be significant. I had a bike carrier on it that caused me to lose 50% of my range on a long trip down the 101. Just from wind resistance. It was shocking. But the Rivian is different, with all the weight and its size and its massive battery, the scale of it all, it is far less impacted by variables. If you're towing a boat, yes you will lose noticeable range, but a bike carrier I don't think as much. Maybe factor in about a 10% drop to be safe (270 miles instead of 300). Visiting my parents... only rule go charge by that exact REI if I wanna use the car on long road trips lol..

I've had a R1T on order since the initial get-go, max pack of course, so now I'm still in line yet another year. I really wanted this truck (software) and charging network to be ready to go when my truck is delivered. ICE vehicles may be not as "cool," but all this planning crap just to drive it, and waiting up to 1 hour to charge on the road is really dampening this potential purchase. I get pissed off just waiting 4 minutes in line to get gas. In the "now" generation, I can't see how people have the patience to wait out this crap, and I'm not even a member of the "now" generation. Thanks for sharing your insights. You're persuading me to stick with ICE ICE baby.

Hey bud, I've had my R1T for 3 months now and love it. That's not why I replied to your post however. Trout bum here too, lol. At any rate, I understand why some would want the max pack. I'll say though, that the large pack seems to be more than sufficient - at least for me as a daily driver. I guess if you're planning long road trips, that would be a different story. Yes, no question that ICE vehicles take no time to "recharge." Wish you well either way bud.

If I had to wait an hour, I'd be pissed too. We've never had a trip where that happened. (1) We're almost always staying within 4 hours driving of our house, (2) often our final destination has an on-premise charger, so we can arrive real low, (3) our charge stops, which are only at those with 150kw speeds or higher, have been 15-20 mins because we pick a spot where the battery will be below 30% full, and thus will charge very fast, (4) we sometimes charge for 30-50 mins but only if we've stopped near a restaurant where we are going to eat. So what that means is that with some planning, it's not that bad. And the many benefits of EVs outweigh this aspect, imo. Thanks for your comment!

The fact the chargers are sideways in a straight in parking stall upsets my OCD.

Since you already have a R1T, you should bring this up to Rivian about the charger installed in reverse. Rivian has a lot to learn from Tesla on DC fast charging and hope they can evolve quickly.

Maybe try DC fast charging at the nearest station to your destination right when you arrive. That way, the battery pack will precondition for optimal speeds and you’ll have enough capacity for a few days before the trip back home. So in this case, charge up to 80% when you hit Truckee RAN, have fun in Tahoe for a few days and on the trip back, maybe bypass Truckee RAN and charge-up in Sacramento.

I pretty much did that, charged when I first arrived in Truckee on Day 1, that is the first charge you see there where I got it to 71%. But I didnt stick around to get it higher because we were in a rush. Then we drove around the area for 3 days and drained it, came back on this cold morning before we headed home. But now that you mention it, maybe I could have maybe driven down to Sac on what I had in the battery and skipped this charge, but there was a massive storm we had to drive through, very sketchy roads, and didnt want another thing to worry about.

Who ever approved the #Rivian charger need to be fired. Why would anyone Not want to see the screen? ?

Ive been to the chargers many times, and it still bothers me as I drive up. Oh well.

Rivian will need to switch to Tesla Super chargers and save themselves hundreds of millions trying to make their own network. It is not worth fighting Tesla for charging stations.
