Rivian R1T Truck Road Trip to Pismo

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm excited to share with you how I planned and executed my first 4-hour road trip in my Rivian R1T truck. I'll cover both the trip planning, as well as execution. For planning, I'll show you how to charge up using the Rivian Wall Charger, onboard Range Estimations with various Drive Modes, Trip Planning, and a Rivian Phone App Charge Station search. And I'll throw in some packing tips regarding some hidden storage areas in the R1T.
Then on the road, I'll demonstrate for you how to adjust the ride height using the air suspension, using the"Conserve" drive mode, how to monitor energy consumption, how you track progress and the estimated battery remaining upon arrival, then I demonstrate several features like Navigation, Rivian's Driver+ Adaptive Cruise Control and Highway Assist (their self-driving features). And I'll cover a charge session I had while on the road.
But most importantly, at the end of the trip, I'll show you how the Rivian R1T Truck performed with the Range I achieved, and the Accuracy I observed when compared to its original estimates.
I also compare several aspects, side-by-side, of my Rivian R1T Truck and my Tesla Model Y; their differences in range, battery size, charge speeds, charging networks, ride quality, size, storage, and off-road abilities.
Here is the agenda to help you follow along, and know that KZread provides you with chapter breaks along the bottom scroll bar...

    Hey Mark. I paused the video just to hop down here and let you know that I really appreciate your approach to your content. Your voice and the tenor that you speak to the audience is very easy to focus on and I can tell you put a lot of thought into the way your structure your your videos. Keep up the good work for as long as it brings you joy.

    I appreciate that! Thanks for taking the time to share feedback. I feel I spend too much time on my videos, likely, which is why I dont get a lot of them out there. I hope to soon find a balance where I can put out a video with the same quality but a lot less time filming and editing. Then I can get at least one a week instead of one a month. Thanks again!

    Video very detailed. Been through 2 teslas. Model s and x. They’ve improved range throughout the years and phantom drain. Only downside when traveling is charging. Glad you’ve talked about how accurate the Rivian range compared to Tesla. Going to trade in my Tesla model s for the Rivian R1T. I’ve missed driving in taller vehicles and be able to carry gears.

About the EA fiasco, I've heard some folks proactively sign up for all memberships across all providers, just to avoid what you had to experience. Now I know why.

    Electrify America has been going through some software problems & some hardware problems as well. I ran into some problems over the weekend but three days later went to the same local location & everything worked just fine. Public stations going through some growing pains. As more varied & more BEVs are using the stations there will be some glitches. Right now I look for a charger that I can arrive at with around 100 miles just in case it's not working & I have to use an alternate charging location.

    Hey Mark, the question I have for you is, where was your family?? I didn't hear a peep from your wife or kids during a four hour trip 😀!! What's your secret? Great video btw!! What was your opinion of Rivian’s GPS system? Another respected reviewer panned it! I'm considering purchasing either a Rivian or BMW iX M50. Have you reviewed the BIMMER, or do you plan to? Have a glorious EV DAY. Over and out!

    Good question. On the way down, which is when I was filming, we were delivering a vehicle to someone in SLO, so some family members were in that vehicle at times. And my kids in the backseat were playing video games, so I would yell "Quiet on the set! I'm filming for 30 seconds!", and then offer them ice cream if they were good. The navigation system is great to use, but needs to (1) allow you to add waypoints during the trip, this is something we use often on the Tesla and miss it, (2) could be a little more accurate at times, as far as WHEN to get off the freeway to get around a traffic jam or accident. But in those situations my co-pilot will check our phones to validate what to do. I also have observed that more often than not, there is a spot on our route that it does not calculate that I am going to use the express lane, so 30-40 mins into the trip, after I get past the bad traffic spots, it suddenly says "recalculating route, we have found a new route that saves you 20 mins...." But I think the way it functions in general is good. I do know that an employee at Rivian told me he does not really like it, so I know some people are not fans. But again, I think it works pretty well, and the massive screen is super nice! I dont know anyone with that vehicle (BMW) so would be hard to find one to review. Now, I do have friends who have Ford Mache, the Hyundai IONIQ, and the Polestar, so I am making plans to use their vehicles for a day and review them. Thanks for the comments, as always, Dan!

    @@marksevlife Hey Mark, many thanks for the reply about your family and Rivian’s GPS. My opinion is Rivian’s GPS needs a hearty software upgrade based on your feedback and Kyle Connors. The large monitor/screen look great! I look forward to seeing your future EV reviews, but what's your next Rivian road trip use case? I wish I had a Rivian R1S you could test drive! Soon, hopefully! Take care. Dan

    No trips to Tahoe yet but will this winter for sure, We also like to go up to Arnold. As soon as I get my first session in the snow, I'll be sure to get a video out on it. But not just about the snow, I'm also curious what the rise in elevation will do to my range. Hopefully do that soon, we might do a camping trip up there before it starts getting cold.

    How come you didn’t pick a hotel at your destination that had a charger you could use overnight? That way you would avoid the need for a fast charger on your return trip and it’s better for your battery.

  • @marksevlife

    @marksevlife

    Жыл бұрын

    We usually do. Our favorite hotel there is Dolphin Bay, if they are full we stay at the Lighthouse Inn, both of those have chargers, even though they are slow you are there for multiple days, it works perfectly and it is free. But for a long story reason, we stayed at a new place and they did not have a charger. I was going to cover this in the video but it was going long... in California, at hotels where people vacation, you have a good chance of getting an onsite/destination charger. You can make it part of your search criteria for a hotel in my opinion. So yes, those are very helpful.

  • @marksevlife

    @marksevlife

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm always riding on Soft, just feels better. Acceleration in both All-purpose and Conserve was equally as smooth, where it starts to get punchy is when you go into Sport mode, with that you have to be good on the pedal or you'll give yourself a rougher ride just from the acceleration kicks.

    The trick with charging at Tesla 250kwh chargers is when your doing a road trip drive fast 70-85 MPH, pull in to a charger with 10-15% state of charge then leave once you hit 80% charged also just charge often. About the range Tesla model Y has 75kwh battery while your Rivian R1T has 130kwh battery twice as big as a Model Y so yah I'm not sure why your surprised you'll get 300 miles of range.

  • @marksevlife

    @marksevlife

    Жыл бұрын

    I've been doing that in the Tesla. On trips where others are driving with others in a caravan (they are in ICE vehicles and not stopping to charge) and it's a 4-hr trip... I will drive 75-80mph, they are driving slower, I stop for a charge when my battery is 20%, we take only 15-20 mins time to stop, do bathroom and food, and we're back on the road, and we end up beating the other cars to the final location. So to your point, drive fast, charge when low, and in the end you're not losing any time on the total trip time.

  • @rj8u

    @rj8u

    Жыл бұрын

    @@marksevlife Best way to do a road trip definitely and with an electric car it actually forced you to stop and rest then get ready again to hit the road. The other and the most significant must is an advanced cruise control like the Tesla Autopilot because it took care of 80% of the drive on the highway and you just relaxed and supervised the system it's a game changer. I do feel for Rivian adventure vehicles to work you need at least 400+ miles of range. I used to have a model 3 long range rear wheel drive that gets 300 miles and it's not enough when you go off the beaten path sometimes.

  • @rj8u
    @rj8u Жыл бұрын

    300 miles of range with 130kwh battery is still a horrible range efficiency per battery size of this truck. Next time bring your Tesla model Y performance with the same trip as a comparison.

  • @marksevlife

    @marksevlife

    Жыл бұрын

    It's the price you pay for the size & weight of a truck. When I want to go offroad, or carry a lot of things, the truck gives me a great option. If all I needed was range and efficient charge stops, I would go Model Y. As for cost, when I charge at home its free since I have solar, and on the road when I charge and pay, the difference between the two vehicles is just a few dollars.

  • @rj8u

    @rj8u

    @@marksevlife Cool. Rivian did a good job about the weight of this truck in comparison to both F150 Lightning and GM Hummer, but the truck still still needs to go on a diet. It would have been nice once Rivian started delivering the R1T that they already at least installed their own charging stations in most visited National Parks in the U.S specially with all the money they got from IPO their company. I can't wait for the next version of this truck or their R2 vehicle and of course the Cybertruck also.
