Riding the Shimano EP8, Shimano's all-new motor!

Спорт

Wondered what it's like to ride on the latest Shimano EP8 motor? Well, check out Andi's latest video where he takes the 85nm, 2.6KG motor out on the trail.
Shimano hasn’t just knocked out a new motor but also updated the display, control and even the wiring that goes with it.
The Shimano SC-EM800 is a colour display that’s slightly smaller than the previous version. It still provides you with all the important riding data you need, it still can’t really be seen in direct sunlight, and it still only shows you battery life as a group of 5 bars rather than a %, but it will now connect to 3rd party equipment wirelessly without the need of any extra hardware.
A more important update, in my opinion, has been made to the assist switch. E8000 bikes were designed to use an underbar shifter to switch between assist modes, but most riders swapped to an E7000 overbar button unit for better ergonomics and the ability to run a dropper remote.
For the EP8 Shimano has made the new SW-EM800-L, an over bar assist control with concave button shape and wider input area for improved ergonomics.
The final detail is the update to the wiring on the EP8 system. Each of these new components is now connected with the new EW-SD300 electric wire. The new wire is lighter, thinner and also futureproof. Shimano felt that the old wiring isn’t up to the job of transferring more complicated data that might be necessary on eMTB’s of the future, so has taken this opportunity to put that right.
The new wiring system is just 2.4mm thick rather than 2.8mm and should allow more electronic components the ability to quickly speak to one another. Manufacturers are still able to mix and match old and new parts with a wire adapter.

Thanks for the review. Did you notice a rattling noise coming out of the motor? Rob from Rob rides noted that in his video and I think I could hear it in yours too. I'm btw absolutely with you on the power consumption riding with mates topic. The range of this EP8 seems to be great but on my last mate run I was able to get 75km and around 1400m of elevation out of my 700Wh Levo battery. I'd really love to try the EP8 though. Hopefully YT will implement it soon in the Decoy and present it on one of their roadshows.

Beside software problem ,error messages ,have they recall or fix all the noise in the bottom motor rattling due to manufacturer /metal fatigue as they said?I think reliability is really in question even though this motor is very quiet. They should have tested out all these problem before releasing the bike.

Hi, yes there is some rattling. It's less than the Bosch but there is something there. On the pretty fast and technical terrain I have at my local, you don't notice it, but you do notice on some rocky paths or cobbled roads when transitioning to the next trail.

I think you are placing too much trust in the battery bar display. The Bosch also uses a 5 bar display. It takes miles to use I bar but as soon as you are past 2 bars use the other 3 go pretty quickly. I interpret what you experienced as exactly the same. In general a 630 battery should give a bout 40km range with a bit in reserve.

further to range discussion: your weight. lighter riders get more range. outside temp and starting battery temp. subfreezing, shorter range. starting with a cold battery shorter range.

Just for some perspective, from a dirt biker, the E-bikes are basically silent, my KTM, makes considerably more noise just sitting still. With my EP8 motor on my Husqvarna it basically just has a slight whine that lets you know it is working properly.
