Hi there folks. Seems there are a few comments here on rattle. Ok, so during the making of this video there was no perceptible noise from the motor, this was possibly terrain related. On the fireroad climbs the bike was incredibly silent and on the descents...well I was mostly dodging rocks. However, it's clear from other vids I have watched that there is something here other than cable rattle so I've contacted Shimano direct. This is their response "Shimano’s DU-EP800 may generate a minor rattling noise if the bike is exposed to vibration when the gears in the drive unit are not loaded (ie during coasting). The DU-EP800 drive unit is a product that achieves high torque with a lightweight, compact, quiet, efficient and low drag structure with improved heat resistance. All components of the drive unit are optimally designed to balance these performance requirements at a very high level. The resulting combination of components can result in a rattling noise in certain situations, but this phenomenon does not affect the function and durability of the drive unit. Based on the feedback from our customers, we are making daily improvements to make our products better. The feedback we received here will be reflected in information to improve future products." Since then I have ridden some different mellower terrain and yes I can hear a slight rattle in certain places, but for certain the feeling is one of improvement over the E7000/8000's, but one's which I also enjoy riding immensely. Seems Shimano are on the feedback

I read that as dogging rocks. They're probably just haters, Steve. They're still waiting for their BOSCH or Brose to be fixed for the 17th time under warranty and wishing they had a SHIMANO motor and their excellent service. Whilst they're crying and not riding their bikes, I'm razzing about the trails f**king sh*t up!

Thanks for contacting Shimano about this one Steve. While in your case you didn't seem to notice it or care about it on that bike, if I were to buy a EP8000 equipped bike, and it made the same kind of rattle +Rob Rides EMTB experienced, as a silence freak (the kind who buys Oynx hubs and routes all cabling externally, even if the bike comes with Internal), it would drive me mad, and I reckon I'm not alone in this one.

Don't need any more power, would like to see a very small light weight motor something like the Fazua but paired with a massive battery 750W+ an ebike that's practically impossible to run out of power in a full days riding. Scapin E-Bone is interesting option and going the right direction for me.

Good old £1.45 STUnlocker used on an E8000 allows total control over NM and wattage support setting in each mode. Its really opened up the "old" E8000 motor in the way described above. Glad Shimano have followed in their footsteps with their new app. Also hear Shimano won't sell the EP8 unit alone so not sure what happens if the E8000 goes bang ? Will Shimano hold a large backorder of spare E8000 so support the last 4 years ?

Good to see attention to thermal management. eMTBs (unlike other electric propulsion products) just don’t give component and overall system efficiency figures (losses due to heat) which makes it very difficult to truly evaluate and compare systems. Such losses if large mean bigger batteries to cope. Increasing thermal efficiency means we can use (to some extent) smaller batteries. With the tuneable software you could tune for a maximum efficiency map for your riding style and area. And on that point it would be great to have a test with a power meter on the pedal, one in the rear hub and then we could measure Wh used from the battery and compare to what we get at the back wheel (minus rider power) to see how efficient, what the losses are from battery to wheel. My guess is around 70% on average gets to the back wheel from the battery.

Mostly I travel ca 30-35 kph depends on cirqumstances. The most important thing is to not have any issues. I like slso switching modes by levers not buttons and very nice display. I am afraid of potential protections agains derestricting in new bikes. I can not agre with 25 kph limit in such heavy bike. Battery capacity 503 is OK for eco riding. To achieve speed over 30 kph boost mode is required more often so it drains battery. I think the best option can be making own power bank with size I can fix to frame - my Scott has a lot of roo inside frame but it means bike will be very heavy. The pros of power bank is it is optional so it can be attached only for longer trips

So unsurprisingly it's better than the old out of date E8000... shocking stuff. But how does it compare to it's competitors, which quiet frankly were a long way ahead? On the face of it, it is still less powerful than the Specialized, has a smaller battery and the app looks like a copy badged up as shimano. Seems about the same power and battery size as the bosch. Weight all seems about the same too. So, since you guys are in the fortunate position to be able to test these bikes how about a good thorough head to head including; real world range test, lap times, tech climb results, feel etc. etc. I know everyone is in a hurry to get this content out but it's better than the last one falls a bit short. Sorry.
