This is the 2nd video I watched from the channel and I'm inclined to agree with you. I don't like how others talk to the camera to gain trust. I understand some people prefer that. I much prefer some sort of evidence to review in order to verify claims, and I like how it's delivered here.

For all those who have not used the etube app, you can change the motor behaviours, start up tourque and a heap of other perimeters which negate some of the issues noted here. I love my ep8 and the noise is almost impossible to hear.

Excellent video. This was a good test. For me as a person who wants to buy the first e-mtb it is really hard to decide with motor to go for. There seems to be no perfect motor, but the EP8 seems to be a good choice. I would be glad if shimano would have solved the rattling noise.

nice review. I ride Trek Rail 9.8 with the Boch C4 performance 625 battery& the last update-the range and efficiency is amazing-riding 50 km climbing 1000 m and consuming only 50% of the battery. after 6 month 1 service mostly for the update. compare to the climbing descending stability and suprisng range some noiseis nothing and even start to like it. so the developments of the engines and the EMTB are remarkable servise and reliability are the most important

Thanks for the great technical review ! One note, you said the "noise seems to be caused by the chainring hitting the motor internals in some way." You mean to say the crank spindle. Not really sure if Shimano's answer stands up to logic as if they are saying required free-play in the bushings is a necessary thing. It will get louder over the miles of use I suspect in Gen 1.0 of a new motor. Then in Gen 1.x they will have taken care of it...quietly :) . Hope St-Unlocker comes out with a version for the Ep8. I could not ride an e-bike as an efficient training tool customized to me and not the other way around; without it. For instance my DU-E8000 motor with the robot silly e-tube app only customizes to 33% increments in the 3 modes. St-Unlocker makes infinite level of % customizations. Example: 21% eco, 43% trail, 72% boost. If I need to change it on the trail, it works so infinitely easier than e-tube, you can do it in about a minute. Great for non robots !

I was going uphill yesterday and was really-really missing a "4th level" at least. Turbo was too much, but Trail just didn't cut it. I find the previous Bosch's eco-tour-emtb-turbo almost perfect. Also, while I am tempted, I am not going to replace a not-even-1 year old Pivot Shuttle ($10K XTR model) up to have an extra setting on it. I really wish Shimano rolled out an upgrade for the older models with either a profile, or just a 4th "curve" ... But of course they want you to just get the new stuff....

@@EMTBVideos Yep. I have eco: high, trail: mid, boost: mid. And it would be really nice to flip the trail to high or the boost to min at times. But with trail in MAX, then it is a battery killing option. It is steep and hot and wet here in Costa Rica and you can get as little as 25Km on a full 500Wh battery in trail mode, because that 25Km has a 1400-1500m vertical in it. If you consider that half of it is coming down, then well, it is pretty steep :)

Did you have the latest firmware on the Bosch? I just got mine updated to the 85nm version and it definitely feels different. The power delivery is smoother. Like other folks, I thought that something was wrong because the bike felt slower but when I checked the time on the loop around my block, it was about 10% faster every lap then I could do before.

Any idea about range ? I see a lot of Shimano E8000 motors equipped with a +600wh battery, but still some reviewers mention only 35kms range on turbo settings. That is in my opinion not much of an improvement over my gen2 performance line cx with 500wh, I get about 40 kms out my 2019 KTM bike on turbo ( on a 40km course consisting of offroad, mostly flat, some climbs, but riding a lot on /mud sand and on the beach ). I really was expecting those 600wh batteries to show some range improvements. What is your guess on range ( between old cx, new cx, e800 and ep8 ? )

coming from a massive E8000 fan boy here there is no way id get a EP8 anytime soon as bike noise really pisses me off. I'd rather have the motor noise of the e8000 over that horrid rattling in the EP8. I don't care what they say, a knocking sound from a motor is never good and will affect how reliable it is in the long run. Great review, still a massive fan of the E8000. I think the makers should be focused on making more reliable motors before making them lighter and smaller. Both Shimano and Bosch motors have stupid code issues. Shimano with their E010 codes and Bosch with their 500 codes! sort them first!

I consider about rattle noise in EP8 and I have some idea. What if we put 24mm wave washer between crank arm and sprocket? That would make some friction between them just like your finger in 2:53 and it should make it more silent. That friction should not be very strong, so it should not affect motor "runover" when you stop pedaling. What do you think guys? I've got two ebikes, one with E8000 which is perfectly silent in my case, and second with Bosch Cx4 which annoys me (rattle noise), and I'm going to sell it.
