Rhonda Patrick on the CRAZY Longevity Benefits of Vitamin D
Ғылым және технология
~70% of the US population has inadequate vitamin D levels (less than 30 ng/mL). The health consequences of this are plenty. In this video, expect to learn:
• How vitamin D regulates the protein-encoding human genome
• Why Vitamin D deficiency is so common
• How vitamin D deficiency accelerates aging & increases mortality risk
• Why older individuals produce less vitamin D
• The "sweet spot" for blood levels of vitamin D
• The vitamin D dose required to raise serum levels by 5 ng/mL
• Why some people require a higher vitamin D supplementation dose to raise blood levels

Campbell's book talks about the dangers of taking isolated vitamins that will throw the body's innumerable biological reactions out of whack and cause problems, not solutions. You could probably make a case for every vitamin and show that most people are deficient in almost all of them. So should we start taking handfuls of vitamin tablets every day? Of course not.

I've seen this case multiple times. These could be the reasons : 1. Don't take vit D2 (studies have attributed D2 to higher blood calcium levels) , but take Vit D3 and if possible with vit K2. 2. The issue here is calcification of arteries if there's too much calcium in the blood. However, it's not possible to have too much calcium if you're drinking enough fluids (not water, hydration fluids i.e. water and electrolytes) throughout the day. 3.Low protein intake. Calcium is used up in digesting protein since protein digestion requires an acidic stomach, which the calcium provides. Up your protein. 4. Genetic condition or certain food allergies. Vit D is important since literally every type of cell in our body has a receptor for it! Do not skip out on vit D3, Omega 3 from cod liver oil and K2. Hope this helps.

There are upper tolerable limits recommended for each of the vitamins in non-prescription supplements - these are amounts known to be safe in all people - but given many variables, this level may not be effective for establishing optimal blood levels in some ppl. So, if someone is unable to do regular testing, it will be safe to take this amount on a regular basis, but w/testing may establish that may need to take more to reach optimal level. Dr. Patrick is not physician, so I'm sure she must not make recommendations for supplementation beyond the official, even though she knows that some ppl will nerd to take beyond this UTL to reach sufficient level, much less optimal. I have heard a vitamin D researcher and physician say ( in a recorded grand rounds presentation to other physicians) that he uses an eight-week protocol of 50,000 IU once per week. I have a photosensitive autoimmune disease and I am elderly and obese, so I knew I was likely deficient even though taking a senior multivitamin and consuming some dietary sources of vitamin D. Therefore, a couple of months b4 my scheduled annual Medicare visit, I started taking 8,000 IU of D3 daily, 6 days/week, in an approximation of the 50,000 IU/week regimen I had heard from the vit D researcher. At my request, my GP ordered vit D blood level test & it was 50, in the middle of the optimal 40-60. And mentally I felt amazing. But will need further experimentation and testing to know how much I need to take on a regular basis to maintain that optimal level. I dropped back to the upper tolerable limit recommendation of 4k IU daily, and, a year later, I feel less well, but will need more testing to determine whether vit D levels have slipped or if something else awry.

Wut about the study ➡️ (Low vitamin D levels linked to longevity, surprising study shows)
I take D3 for my peyronies disease.
I take 10,000 if its sunny and 15,000 if im not getting sun
Vitamin D and Zinc 👍
Ask my doctor to check my vitamin D levels and she just scoffed at me. (I refuse statins so I guess she figured I wasn’t worth her time) Change doctors to find out my vitamin D levels are really low even though I’ve been taking 5000 U daily. Plus I was getting at least an hour or two of sunlight in the summer. She had me take a different brand of vitamin D at 10,000 U. It’s been a month and I’m starting to feel better. Not all brands of vit & herbs are created equal.

How did you take your vitamin D?
Plus to feel at least 10 years younger and stronger you need to charge up the body capacitors. Works for me. Hahaha.
How can you make 4 TIMES less of something...that ain't mathing
daily adequate sun exposure per day is 10,000 IU of vitamin D, I wake up before the sun, work all day inside and have a basement apartment at the very minimum I take 10,000 IU of vitamin D unless I've been outside for the majority of my day.
Just checked my D3 supplement bottle and it says that each pill has 4,000 iu (100mcg) and my cod liver oil capsules has 5 (it's either ug or yg, can't quite decipher it.) Is that enough for a man in his 60's? 🤔

I am a bit disappointed that there is so much focus on supplementation with pills. The first thing people should do is try to get a little bit of sunshine every day if this is available. Here in the tropics, I do that every morning as this helps me with my circadian rhythm as well, but further from the equator, you will need to do it around noon. Next you should make sure you eat a healthy diet with plenty of fatty meat and fish, occasionally also liver. If that is not enough, you could try to supplement - by using a UVB light. Supplementation with pills is a last resort measure.

I've tried a variety of vitamin d supplements but they make my ears ring. I found a research article somewhere on the internet that mentioned something about tinnitus and vitamin d supplements so I know it's definitely a thing. My levels have been horribly low for years and I have osteoporosis now I think because of it. Can anyone recommend a good brand for vitamin d?

If 1,000 UI of Vitamin D raises serum levels by ~5 ng/ml, and to have an adequate blood serum levels, you need to be >= 30-60 ng/ml. That would translate to 6,000 - 12,000 UI. However, the at the very beginning of this video, the bottom left of her presentation slide says a tolerable upper intake of 4,000 UI/day. Seems like a contradiction. So which is it? 6,000 - 12,000 UI/day or 4,000 UI/day?
@johnsalamito6212

@@HolisticPython All these are guides, but definitely you can take a LOT more than 4000IU. A good sunshine day gives you 25,000. See David Grimes work is my recommendation. What we know from labs is that mouse need 1IU per 10gm. Hence 1,000IU per 10kg is a very rough guide. You need blood tests of course. But nothing will go wrong by taking 4,000- 10,000 per day for 6 mths. See what bloods say at end of that.

@@HolisticPython also that 1,000IU equates to 5nmol is also a rough guide. But nonetheless almost nobody can be hurt by an extra 25nmol or 40nmol, hence another reason to try 5,000 to 10,000. People have literally taken 500,000iu per day harmlessly but you do need to have K2 and magnesium as well at right levels. Almost everyone should supplement Mg. For K2, simply buy your D3 premixed with K2 (mk 7).
I would love to give Dr Rhonda Patrick some vitamin D ❤
Is it really important to take k2 with it ?
@nibornnyw3185

Some say take your k2 like once a week or so. Others say magnesium is more important. I take k2 daily, once in a while. Then when I run out I give it a break. I get my mag daily through the skin. Always.
I find rather interesting that the Women Health Initiatives didn't find marked benefits to Vitamin D supplementation, despite being a decade long study with the statistical power to boot.
Isn’t it really important to take K2 with it? Wonder why she didn’t discuss it.
Do you have to take Vit K with D or is that a myth. Can you get the Vit k from food ?

Is 5k of D safe for someone with mild kidney disease ?

Every thing not absorbed is passed through Kidneys. That is a huge amount. You need to see a very high professional. So what you do is get a Kidney function test. And if the excretion is above 500 mg /litre . Your in a bit of trouble. I would be checking what you are taking and if the kidneys store it. If in doubt take the 5k then get a reading of Vitamin D in Urine. It's your life !

Check your “active” vitamin D3 1,25OH D3. It is what your kidneys convert from what the liver has converted. Watch Dr. Eduardo Beltran’s videos. He is a vitamin D expert in Brazil.

@@theancientsancients1769 I'd been taking 4,000 ius a day for a couple of years now. Maybe the issue is that since I went carnivore I'm eating a load of pastured eggs every day and I've a feeling they're like triple the vitamin D strength of eggs from chickens that haven't seen sunlight, you know? So I've ditched the supplementation. I live in northern Ireland and basically never get strong enough sunlight here to move the needle. I'll test again in 6 months and see if there's any reduction.

@@theancientsancients1769 I took 4000ius with K2 for a couple of years. I'm in northern Ireland, so I'm never exposed to the kind of sunshine that really moves the needle, even in summer. I think the issue might be that I've been carnivore for a year now and eating a lot of pasture-raised eggs each day, and oily fish. The eggs are pretty high in vitamin D, so I've been getting between 2000-3000ius from my diet most days. I've stopped supplementing now and I'll re-test in 6 months to see how things have changed.
