A new (and final) Star War hits theatres this week, so I decided to go back to where it all began (chronologically, at least) with a video about one of the more overlooked Star Wars films, The Phantom Menace.

Simply hearing someone talk about this movie with a purely positive and empathetic attitude is something I never knew I needed. Beautiful, Roby

Thank you for making this video Roby. As someone who enjoyed these films as a youngling then hated them as a teen and finally love them as a young adult. It's refreshing to see a different kind of perspective that praises these movie(s).

As I say in the video, I genuinely think we're told to dislike them from a super young age. So much so that we never really generate our own interpretation/opinion.
The Force is strong with this one.
As someone who's always loved the Prequels, I feel the opposite of Lancaster. To me TPM is the one Star Wars film that does stand alone. It has sequel hooks like many such fantasy films did even before Shared Cinematic Universes were a thing. It also works as a great first episode of a series, but it does work on it's own. The problem is people criticizing it as a stand alone film want it to be about Anakin when it was always about the Queen but told from the POV of Qui-Gon Jinn. I fell in love with this film in 1999 with no prior investment in Star Wars, and so did many who unlike me hadn't even seen the OT yet.

The Prequels really show you the power of a second draft. These movies, if given a few more edits at the scripting stage like almost all films get, could’ve been masterpieces. There are fantastic ideas here. That’s a big thing for me-execution is absolutely everything. It can immerse audiences in your ideas or lock them out completely. And a story this interesting deserved some more attention throughout the process.

I think the truly amazing thing about these movies are that they are essentially independent films (Lucas funded them himself, and only used Fox to distribute). They really are HIS visions, and in a day and age where filmmaker's visions are being completely ruined, it is pretty insane that one man controlled the gigantic IP that is Star Wars.

iamthatroby It certainly helped that his initial contract granted him rights to the merchandising for Star Wars AND he created the entire visual effects department that revolutionized Hollywood in the same movie and put it essentially in his backyard. As a creator, it’s always the nightmare to me. When no one can tell you “no”, you don’t know where your limits are. It’s uncomfortable to think that your vision undiluted might not be the best it can be and collaboration is vital to success, but sometimes that’s what we need to rely on. When I watch the behind the scenes documentary, I see George looking around the room at a bunch of people eager to please him and I get the feeling that when he was in that initial screening, he kept looking around thinking “Were none of you people gonna talk to me about this? Why are some of you even here?” I almost feel bad for him. It’s like no one had the balls to help.

For me story is absolutely evrything. It's shame to me that people don't see deep moral themes, seriousness and huge world-building in these movies. Yes, somedialogue are meh, but they matches to characters who say them. As more I rewatch the movies, as more sence I find in them.
“Being told to hate these movies” interesting point, I like it. Nice video. I think the prequels are great.
What I find funny is that Alex Jones of all people has given the prequels a better hearing than most. He was one of the first people to talk at any length about the politics at the centre of the trilogy, with its false flags, proxy wars and all. Of course, he put his own spin on bits of it, but his core breakdown was surprisingly fair and accurate.
The legend returns! I’ve been thinking about you recently, man. Glad you’re still kicking.
We’ve been marathoning thru the movies in the last few days and I totally agree with you about PM. Revenge of the Sith is the best of the prequels but the set up is all there. Also, love your new haircut!
This film was my childhood, it was the only Star Wars film I watched until I was 12, it is my favourite if merely from my deep connection to it. And while many perceive this film as deeply flawed, I’ve found quite the opposite. Most complaints are severely exaggerated. The film has heart, and a lot of care and attention to detail was put into it. Not to mention it’s significance on the advancement of film as a medium. While it is not perfect it certainly is brilliant.

the man, the legend. glad you're back m8
Phantom Menace is my favourite of the prequels. There was a fan cut on youtube (which is since gone) which was actually pretty great.
I'm happy that you returned.
I’ve always liked the prequel‘s their action packed from the get go
The wait is over, ladies and Gents our resident youtuber, aspiring film student and absolute MadLad is back!
Duuuude you’re back!
Are you going to continue this series with the other two movies? Cause I really enjoyed this movie and I really just wanna see more positive prequel content
its like poetry. it rhymes
I've always loved it and it was this film as a kid and the video games that came out then that made me become a mega fan of star wars.
So good dude; keep these kinds of vids going. Great job
As someone who quite enjoys the prequels (flawed though they are) and thinks The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars film since Empire, I find myself at odds with most of the Star Wars fandom most of the time. So thank you very much for this video.

I can relate. Revenge of the Sith and The Last Jedi are actually my two favourite Star Wars movies. And by the way, I don‘t think the prequels are flawed. They work perfectly in my opinion. Screw toxic fans though. Let everybody have their own opinion and enjoy what they like. That‘s what I do. :)
when is part 2 and 3 coming out?
25 years later is still interesting despite some problems with it and when I saw it as a 10 year old in cinemas in 1999 I still like it despite its flaws
Classic Roby
I'm analyzing this movie, seeing those who watched it as a kid come out and say how they love it when I think everyone at the time of release didn't. I think the reason kids come up and speak to it's strengths is primarily because the themes are all pretty on point and pretty engaging. Imo the plot isnt as tight as it could be, in some sense it's probably a little complicated, and characterizations left much to be desired. However kids at the time (now adults) are tapped into the basic themes and forget about the rest of it. Kids don't need great acting, they are happy with a Stoic Liam Neeson being fatherly to and calm to all he engages with. Kids don't need witty dialog like adults do, they don't need the plot to all make sense and follow smoothy. However if the themes are there kids get that and thats what resonates with fans of the prequels now. I sort of wonder at what the prequels could be like if they were executed with a greater focus.
I am glad you like them, I just cannot bring myself to understand how these movies are good, but I respect this video.
Well, hello there.
I missed you Roby.
Welcome back muh boi. Also episode 3 is definitely in my top 3 star wars films. Don't @ me. I'd take those imperfect masterpieces over this new trilogy trash. Anyway this video is absolutely amazing!

Politics bad, no argument as to why. Palpatine's plan makes no sense, no argument there either. That's what I mean by him barely even covering his own arguments.

Bold take. But I respect it
I feel like this is the most underrated Star Wars movie. Yes it has lots of flaws, but lots of the movie is really enjoyable. We got introduced to Qui-Gon Jinn who is one of my favourite Star Wars characters, and some awesome lightsaber duels. Maybe it just nostalgia but I think this movie can be really enjoyable. I can understand why it would be a disappointment in 1999 since it didn’t live up to the quality of the original trilogy but when I go back to it I would be lying if I said I didn’t get any enjoyment out of it.
Man. Positivity in the SW fandom. Seems like forever ago that the fandom felt safe to discuss SW without being literally harassed for liking these films
I LOVE YOU ROBY!
G. Lucas Created this World. So he can do with it what ever he wants with it.
They should remake the prequels.
Did anakin knowing he was the chosen one before he became it cause him to be Darth Vader
oh, hello there!
What's up Roby?
Are you that guy from that other channel?! I know that voice. I've heard before!
What I see here is he read the Dune books once or twice. Books 5 and 6 have given him more material to rip off since he didn't tackle those yet. He saw how book 1 and 2 "rhimed" , and since he took most of the plot elements from those books already, all he had left was the idea that stuff "rhimes" so it's cool to make a redundant movie about it. This movie is not the worst movie ever made, nor are any of the star wars movies. But it's not a movie worth a rewatch if you have seen it. In fact I would not reccomend it to anyone. Its not a good movie and you could be watching tons of other better movies, not wasting your time in the process. I grew up with this movie and saw it millions of times. It was probably my favourite as a kid, along with Empire and Revenge. I guess people can do whatever they want with their lives, but since its star wars and its in everyone's face there's no escaping it with this one.
The prequel trilogy has a greater impact then the original

I love watching the prequels. But the plot is not properly conveyed, there's no subtlety in the messaging, the dialogue is bland and artificial. The idea was brilliant, but the execution not so much. It actually feels the same way that TLJ did for me. (Except I was unable to enjoy TLJ). I thought that wat RJ intended to do could have been fine if done properly. (Spoilers: he didn't)
Hosntelly top teir content love this shit
"It's like poetry. They rhyme," is about the idea that the stories are similar, so why use that quote when you're referencing things we know are going to happen? That's not at all what he was referring to.
The movie that made me a SW normie lol
has anyone ever told you you look like channing tatum. because you do
I think the prequels are good, great stories, subpar execution. So if you believe in the underlying narrative, the prequels are not bad just not as good as it could be. “Bad” movies but story wise it’s good Starwars. It’s just the contradicting filming. But tbh take out jar jar and fix the cheesy dialogue and they aren’t bad at all. The sequels are all bad though.
@TriggeringOpinionsandFacts

But I loved the politics and the trade deals and stuff like that. Just skip jar jar
Lucas was an author He maybe has gone too far in few places... ... he’s a political engaged cineast and that is star wars
You say that the criticisms of this film are 1) they are different to the originals, 2) it upsets me, 3) it ruined my childhood. I like your work and I'm about your age, but I find this pretty reductive. There are many reasons this is a bad film that go beyond knee-jerk emotions. The dialogue is terrible, the acting wooden, and the CGI was overused are my main three gripes. There are others that are completely legitimate as well.
Episode I is fine with the exception of Jake Lloyd's scenes. He's just not a good actor.
Honestly I tried to rewatch this as an adult and I genuinely feel it’s unwatchable. Jar Jar is much worse than I remembered as a kid, and it’s just overall really poorly made. Sure the actors do a good job portraying their characters but it’s not enough. 2/10
