Classic release! And still notable for containing the theatrical cut. But yeah, I remember people importing this like mad back in the day. The only thing that came close was the import frenzy over the Japanese release of Pulp Fiction - which came out well before the U.S. pressing. That busy-looking insert is an info sheet about Dolby Digital Surround EX. You can see the サラウンドEX notice on the Obi and elsewhere. It was a faux 6.1 surround format co-created by Dolby and Lucasfilm at the behest of Gary Rydstrom, who wanted to juice up the surround experience with a center rear speaker for proper spaceship flyovers etc. The Phantom Menace was the first film to use it theatrically, and likewise the first on LaserDisc to implement the format. Though it's not a discrete 6.1 track - the center channel is matrixed into the left and right surround channels and extracted much like a center channel from an old stereo soundtrack meant for Pro Logic processing. Later releases on DVD included a flag that could trigger receivers into decoding the channel properly, but on LD you have to activate it manually. In this case, it does sound better than the DVD indeed. Good stuff!

Eric Peeper I just got one off eBay myself. I was cleaning out my grandma's house and found a LaserDisc player, high-quality one too. So I've been getting a few LaserDisc as they're relatively inexpensive.

Your pronunciation of the obi strip is correct. Just like Obi wan kenobi. They keep the cover artwork in English that's why they use obi's to put Japanese information on them. The Japanese like to keep things original, that's why they use subtitles instead of voice over...plus they are very literate and can read:)

I do speak Japanese and my wife is Japanese. The pronunciation is like the first one you said that it's NOT. It's fine whatever you chose, though. As long as we know what you're talking about in context, everybody's happy (^_^) We refer to NTSC as "Never The Same Colour".

In foreign language countries, they did get a Widescreen VHS of AOTC, but it wasn't part of a big box set like TPM.

Where got a widescreen vhs of attack of the clones because everywhere I’ve only seen full screen

I find it intressting that here in the nordic countries we got the star wars movies on dvd in widescreen only. The TPM dvd has the bar at the top that says: "Every saga has a begining." but all the other ones have no bar at the top (aside from the limited edition dvd's that just say limited edition). Seems the trend of watching movies in 4:3 died out quicker here than in the US.

region 1 probably had the most exclusive full screen releases but they died out here around 2009 as 16x9 tvs gradually became more common. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was one of the last dvd's I saw offered in full screen and at that time, a lot no longer came with that option.

Someone by the name of GrievousDude96 actually uploaded the opening of the Japanese laserdisc of this movie, and everything in it is in English, including the audio. Why? I get that Japan is NTSC, but why wasn’t the audio dubbed in Japanese instead of English?

There's actually a lot of Japanese Star Wars releases that aren't dubbed. Sometimes you'll see both dubbed and subtitled available, but when it's only one, it's nearly always just subtitled for Japan.

@@ChronoRadio That makes sense. I asked because a friend of mine made a fictional Japanese version of the THX Broadway laserdisc trailer. He thought it would be cool if the Japanese laserdisc of this movie had the trailer itself in that language. Thanks for answering, and may the force be with you.

Riddler 95 I have the Japanese laserdisc of the phantom menace also the the last laserdisc edition of the special edition trilogy that came out in 2000

Good video Nathan. Talk about home video formats that were big for the original trilogy but don't last long enough for films of the prequel trilogy in the US. Obviously no Laserdisc release of Phantom Menace in the US and no VHS release for Revenge Of The Sith in the US.

Nathan did you know if is slightly speed up missing the scene in the podrace were aniken gets together with acompetter and lost his condition to his. Engine he uses a magnet rench to get it back before he tangled with selbuba that scene is not on the laserdisc check your self

That isn't a missing scene. It wasn't featured in the Theatrical Cut of The Phantom Menace, instead George Lucas added it to the movie for it's DVD release way back in 2001, and it was featured in the Blu-Ray from 2011 as well. The Theatrical Cut of The Phantom Menace from 1999 has never been released on DVD or Blu-Ray. The best way to watch it is to acquire a copy of the Japanese LaserDisc.

Did you just happen to make this episode 66? Or was that a Star Wars pun?

Neither in the U.S. (with no TPM) nor Japan. If LDs of either existed in other regions, LDDB has no record of them.

Nope. I haven't tested on an old 4:3 TV, but every list I've ever seen of Squeeze LD releases from Japan hasn't had any Star Wars LDs on the list(s).

Is it really necessary to keep fading to black every time you finish a sentence?

I prefer it to choppy, jumpy cuts any time there's an edit, and that has tended to be a preference echoed by longtime viewers of the channel. So, when there's a need to make an edit so you're not seeing dead air or getting stuck with flubs . . . yes, it is.
