I have been an MA for about 5 plus years now and I absolutely love it! I feel like its one of those rates where it is what you make it. If you're a hard charger and highly motivated it will take you extremely far. I agree with his review but would like to add some insight. In my opinion, MA is one of the most diverse rates in the navy. We do everything from; like he said, Gate sentry to Law enforcement to NCIS to CRS and CRG. On top of all that we literally can be stationed anywhere in the world just about. Yes, the hours may be long but guess what. We do the job so everyone else can sleep safely at night knowing that we have the watch.

Grungekiid like some commands are LE mostly and others are almost all ATFP or you can be on a ship or attached to a squadron. MA’s are jacks of all trades we literally can perform a different mission at ever duty station we go to.

Drieza You most definitely can be stationed in Japan wether on board of one of the many ships in the 7th fleet or at one of the bases. As far as E-4 out of A school they had a program where if you met the requirements for honor grad you could get it. But if you don’t do that it just depends on when you graduate and how close to the advancement exam takes place. I got to my command in August, took the test in September, and got frocked in December. Money is a big reason people want to advance but being an MA3 will put you in a leadership roll so it is important you learn how to lead sailors before you get there. Study hard, get your quals, and work hard and you be good to go

For those interested in a career in law enforcement post-Navy: Although your experience in the Navy as an MAA won't automatically qualify you to become a police officer, it will definitely give you a good taste of what law enforcement jobs are like from a day-today perspective while giving you a lot of training. At least in CA, law enforcement agencies don't look into your rate during your time in the Navy, but DO take into consideration that you are prior military which is a big ++ during the application process. Navy experience + college courses(which can be taken while in the military) are great resume builders for those not looking at the Navy as a long-term career.

I was an Operations Specialist, but was an MP in Yokosuka Japan for two years. One night someone called MPHQ saying that a man left the base theater bleeding ito his popcorn bucket . We arrived at the theater and found a bucket of popcorn and blood in the trashcan by the exit . I'm a country boy from South Carolina South so I know how to follow a blood trail from a wounded deer . I lead the other MPs to a man leaning over the rail at the marina , spitting blood into Tokyo Bay . We transported him to the USNH . He'd had oral surgery earlier that day , the popcorn had torn open his sutures . What if he'd bled out or fallen into the bay and drowned ? We may have saved his life that night . Thanks Nick !

I personally enjoy being a MA. Every duty station is different and there’s so many different sides. Yes you will check ID’s. But there’s also patrol, Responding to damn near every type of calls for service, Guarding nukes, Harbor security etc. not to mention we can work at any base in the world. You only get OC’d once in your career now just don’t lose that cert lol.

I was an aviation mechanic, structures. (AMS) and loved it ! Got to serve in the gulf war and was qualified to work on 3 different aircraft. Framp school. Did it for 10 years. 1985 until 1995 and loved it. The Navy even paid my rent when I was stationed in Sigonella Sicily. I lived in a small town named Misterbianco. About 20 miles from NAS Sigonella. What a great country ! I fell in love with cliff diving over there. Looking back Im not sure how smart it was jumping off 80 foot cliffs into the ocean but man it was fun and a great way to meet locals and blow off some steam ! When you weren't flying or on an all hands working weekend it was paradise on earth ! And the most prettiest women in the world if you liked long shiney black hair and the most beautiful eyes you could ever imagine ! I was 6 foot 3 inches with blond hair so I stuck out like a sore thumb because all the locals were short with dark hair. What a great time of my life ! Thank you US Navy !

Dope video! Just subscribed! Side note, but I was wondering if you could have envisioned yourself doing 20 years in the Navy? I know it's a lot of time and a major decision affected by many factors, but I was curious about your in-depth perspective of it especially with the advantage of hindsight that you have at this point in time. The eight year mark sounds like the critical turning point to either pivot back into civilian life or re-enlist, hit twelve, and then go the full twenty years...so I was wondering how you weighed that decision out for yourself? Maybe if you could touch on people you've known finish their twenty and their thoughts on it, that would be amazing insight as well! Thank you for all you've done and I wish you and your KZread Channel much success ^.^

Like, I’m going in as an E-3, MA, 23 years old. Hey Nicky, I know you might not know the answer to this question but I figured I'd ask anyways... so I want to be a state trooper in the future but I want to join the navy first. Some have told me that it isn't a good idea to be an MA first because of the different training and stuff, but do you know if this is true? I've even heard sometimes it hurts your chance of getting a job in civilian police. It seems like common sense to me to do military police before civilian police but I don't know.

Every branch has similar benefits and jobs in some aspects. You should look at the experience you want out of the military. Meaning do you want the brotherhood of the marines, the less military life style like the airforce or the ship going life of the navy. (most sailors actually aren't on ships by the way). I like being a corpsman because we can go with the marines.

Dont know where or when you served but I was a MWD MA2 in the 80s and MAs did not check IDs or Uniform infractions. I was part of EOD then went on to Narcotics/Patrol, Base Investigations search Team leader. The skills we used were directly related to civilian law enforcement. Was involved in the investigation of 2 murders, several suicides and massive amount of drug trafficking issues. As well as one covert pre invasion operation of a certain country that still isnt totally unclassified as of yet. We were much more that a "gate guard" That was all TAD sailors. Of course when I was in MA was not a from boot camp rating like it is now you had to be E5 or above and put in the study hours.

the MA rating has changed a lot honestly. After 9/11 they moved to more a anti-terrorisim force. MA's still are stationed at various commands such as EOD etc. However that is not the majority within the rating. It's hard to make these videos like this because many sailors in many different ratings perform in different capacities. Thanks for your service!

thanks man! I mean its pretty easy to get a hospital blue side for your first command and its also pretty easy to go green side. It's really depending on what is available. It's not like a solid line of blue versus green and you're stuck.

Saying all they do is check ID's and pull security duty is like saying the Corpsman only change bed pans and bed sheets. lol. I know cause I too was a Corpsman. As you said, every job is about what you put into it. How much effort you give. You do little work and little effort you'll be given the crappy jobs. You put forth effort and work hard to get what you want in that given field you'll be happier.

that's why I tried to expand on the job a bit more than "checking ID's" which isn't wrong. As prior corpsman you can see how the "day to day" work varies on platform from ship, marines, seabees etc.

And my sincerest apologies for spamming your comment section, because I am writing these comments as they come in to my head. And in regards to the AF each base has their own unique set of protocols. For example one base might use 10 codes on the radio and another base will use plain English. And each base you PCS to you have to go through a two to three week training with someone that has been there for a while in order to familiarize yourself to the base.

  • @briankg05

Just has this happen to me about 30 minutes ago. So I went to go pick somebody up at the barracks to bring them to the hanger. When I got to the gate, it was dark and there were no lights on (this happened at 0430) but I could see the MA flashing a light so I thought they were waving me over so I drove up passing the stop sign and first thing she asked was "What does it say underneath that stop sign" in a real condescending way, to which I replied "Uh to stop?". Then she asks why I didn't stop and was threatening to arrest me. Internally I was thinking "why did you ask me what it said underneath it when you could have asked what the actual sign said itself. Also, if its dark out and you have no lights on, assume I can't see you or you fiddling with your card reader". Seriously though I know that not all MAs are like this but most that I have seen are. She acted like she was John McClane saving the day. If you're an MA that is reading this and that acts like this, please stop. You're not a real cop.
