10 THINGS YOU MUST BUY AFTER BOOTCAMP?!

This video I discuss the 10 things you will need to buy after you leave bootcamp.
As cited from Navy Personnel Command the glasses regulation is as follows.
(1) Prescription Glasses. No eccentric or faddish glasses are permitted. Retainer straps are authorized for FOD prevention and safety only. If retainer straps are required, they shall be plain, black and worn snugly against the back of the head.
(2) Sunglasses. Conservative sunglasses are permitted, except in military formations. Retainer straps are authorized for FOD prevention and safety only. If retainer straps are required, they shall be plain, black and worn snugly against the back of the head.
(3) Contact Lenses. Tinted contact lenses must be a natural color (blue, green, brown, etc).

Quick PSA for the shirt stays: the ones that clamp to your sock will eventually tear a gaping hole in it. I strongly recommend the ones that loop around your foot, and has the metal claspers that go on the shirt. Side note: Toaster ovens and air fryers are much better alternatives to reheating left-overs than a microwave.

Important tip before you leave for bootcamp, back a suitcase with all the civilian clothes, shoes etc. and you want to have at A School. When your family comes to graduation have them bring it with them. Makes life easier and cheaper then having to go out and buy new clothes or having your family mail them to you.

Great video. I can’t believe they never issued you guys shirt stays. I loved how crisp they make you look. It’s not like they’re expensive or anything. I gotta agree with you about the glasses. Those things are atrocious. I thought they would’ve issued all of you something a little better than those. I know when I finally couldn’t fake my way through the eye exam, they gave me some glasses that were have descent and some BCG’s. Along with being ugly as all hell, they were made for a 10yr old kid and nearly squeezed my head into.I have those things tucked in a drawer somewhere & look at the just for laughs every now and then.

Shirt stays! Yes! But get the “stirrup” kind, not the double clip kind. One less buckle to wear out and snap you somewhere you don’t want to be snapped. Corfam shoes are great for inspection. Also, whatever ribbons/medals/badges/devices/etc. that you earn and rate, buy extras! Get some nice heavier dress shirts (Flying Cross, Creighton, etc.) and set up a couple of them as inspection-ready shirts that you leave untouched in your wall locker. Always have at least one set of uniforms ready (cammies, Bravo, Charlie, Delta...whatever that Popeye looking thing is called that you sailors have).

So im fresh out of boot camp 2 weeks ago. Currently at new london sub school and we are actually not allowed to wear the cheater shoes for inspections sadly. The eisenhower is amazing and im so happy i bought one. A big recommendation i would make is to go to the tailor at the nex and have the rank tab sewn on the parka liner so you can wear a warm jacket in your nwu’s without having to wear the full parka. I also personally bought a set of my ribbons for each of my uniforms that need ribbons so i dont have to move my ribbons between uniforms. Also buy a new water bottle after boot!

definitely new running shoes. thats the very first thing i thought of when i saw the thumbnail. the only thing i bought when i graduated marine bootcamp were new running shoes. everything else you said we got issued. the issued uniform shirts are the cheaper ones, but you dont need to buy anything there. they are good enough. (in fact after i decided i was going to reenlist i bought 1 good uniform set to wear. the rest is just for my wall locker inspection and is good enough for it. maybe some more undershirts for utility uniforms and socks, boot socks and white socks for running in. and hygiene stuff like soap shaving and teeth care things (if you need more) as far as workout clothes i bought my branch branded shirts for that purpose only. i didnt use my good shirts to workout in. i may have looked too "moto" during civilian attire pt functions but i didnt waste money on expensive workout clothes either, + i had marine shirts to wear after i retired.

100% cotton BATH towels, underwear, socks and even razors, shaving cream, soap and shampoo that you like. I HIGHLY recommend getting at least one extra cover aka uniform hat and extra uniforms as you can. It reduces how often you do laundry when on shore as well as when in the fleet, shipboard laundry when at sea does not always insure you have clean uniforms by the time your division gets laundry back. Also the more uniforms you have to rotate through, the less wear and tear as well as fading your uniforms go through.

Wow, I'm surprised that these two things did not make the list: a multi-tool (preferably Leatherman or SwissTool) and a pocket knife (preferably, one with spring assisted opening). You WILL need them, and you don't want to be that guy that's always asking other people if you can use theirs. BTW, if you are admin or supply, not only does this "also" apply to you; it "especially" applies to you. Snipes have tools in their spaces. You don't.

Just curious-do you have PT in your A-school? Also if you go to the fleet is PT required? I understand the Navy is mainly technical. (If I was 20 years younger I would have gone Navy....even had a classmate in high school that really tried getting me to go in with him on the 'buddy system'.) 20 years on and I'm probably just on the FBI watch list because the Army taught me how to blow stuff up...(and pound pickets into the ground....lol...yea my recruiter left that part out.)

If you there are some items that are not on this list just ask a PO or even a Chief on items that would be good to get just ask. It is amazing how just asking nicely will get some good results. When I asked I had a GM2 inform me of stuff I might need and even went to the Exchange and helped me with stuff.

A lot of these items are for service and/or dress uniforms. When you're stationed on a ship (and this is probably where the new boot is going) you wear a working uniform 99% of the time.

Rough Rider what are you talking about. Everyone goes to A- school afterwards. And when you go to the fleet you don't wear NWU's you're gonna be wearing poopy suits.

And I wore dungarees in A school. Besides, A school is only a couple of months, so I still wouldn't worry about an Ike jacket, shirt-stays and corframs. "And when you go to the fleet you don't wear NWU's you're gonna be wearing poopy suits." 1. I said "working uniform", not specifically NWU. Coveralls also fall into this category. 2. You don't wear an Ike jacket, shirt-stays or corframs with coveralls either. 3. Although I'm no longer in the Navy, I work as a contractor aboard Navy ships every day. I see plenty of sailors wearing the NWU (both blue and green) Most ships these days even have their Quarterdeck watches wearing working uniforms, so I stand by my point- Don't waste money on extra stuff for dress and service uniforms because they stay in your locker 95% of the time.

  • @CraftedChaosGaming

Rough Rider You're right you only said working uniform. I stand by some of the items though, shirt stays being the main one for inspections. When underway, atleast on subs, you're going to be wearing your poopy suit almost all the time. Not 100% which is why NWU'S are still apart of the sea bag. Secondly you're lucky I wish dungarees were still the working uniform. Way, way cheaper. If you're part of a shore command I guess you'll see NWU'S all the time.

Back when I used to smoke reefer and peruse the internet for smoking gadgets and things, I came across a device called the Neutralizer. The small plug-in neutralizes the smell of weed in a room using some proprietary blend of botanical oils.... who knows maybe there is something to neutralize the smell of pungent foods.

Funny, seeing JTsuits roll in like he owned the place though. That was funny.

AF issues the "Eisenhower jacket" and shirt stays to you, I wish they issued is leather shoes cause I bought them anyways. If your glasses prior to BMT were in regs keep them, cause ik mine were. Also your glasses will likely get the wrong presctiption for BMT because they're so quick to process you. Go to the DFac (for AF at least) you may be given a microwave & a fridge/freezer unit but can't get any heating elements in tech school and you're allowed to bring back the fruit, packaged cereal & chips ect from the DFac. And in AF there's usually a period in which you HAVE to be in some form of uniform unless you're in your dorm room

Don't buy anything large. You have to pay to ship anything or lose money on things you leave behind. save money, be smart. Shirt stays, for the love of your happy parts, wrap them around your leg once and if they snap loose, it will lose some momentum on its way to making children less likely.
