Review: Geometry Survivor (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, Switch & Steam) - Defunct Games

Ойындар

Defunct Games reviews Geometry Survivor by Brain Seal, available February 21 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
Geometry Survivor is a dodge ‘em up that mixes the best elements of Vampire Survivor with Geometry Wars. It’s a throwback dual-stick shooter that ditches one of the sticks and forces the player to avoid differently-shaped enemies. The action is equal parts chaotic and exciting, especially when you’ve leveled up six different weapons all firing at once. However, once the repetition takes hold, it never lets go. This is a cheap game that is fun for a couple hours, but it’s in serious need of more levels and modes. While not as good as either Geometry Wars or Vampire Survivor, Geometry Survivor is still a good time that is worth five-bucks.

I'm a fan of the survivor genre, I'll nab this one.

Definitely gonna have to check this out for sure! Vampire S was definitely my game of the year in 2022! Speaking of that I recommend checking out Brotato! It's another Vampire S style game but more of a shmup style except you don't really shoot. It's all auto and it's more about moving and dodging and surviving basically. It's not as good as VS but it's still really fun and like the other 2 games it's only $5 bucks definitely worth checking out. Now unfortunately unlike VS where you have multiple levels and stages and can more throughout the stages, Brotato takes place in a small arena binding of Issac style. Still really good for what it is tho. I would really love to see a VS style game based around Galaga or Space Invaders! VS might make a entire sub genre of games it's really just that good!

Well, I guess for $5 it is worth it, one of those get what you pay for, so glad to hear they're not overpricing it like some Devs do. As for the question, maybe the classic Astroids might be one. Many time when I played it on my dad's old 2600, as well as on MAME, I'm mostly focused on shooting anyways. Letting the computer control the ship might be better.

Unfortunately, I did not. I got a code when the Early Access version came out, but then the release slipped by when I was busy and I ended up playing it just for fun.

I love the Ace Combat series but I hated it when they added the mechanic to give your wingman commands especially when the game basically pauses to wait for a response from the player. I was in a dogfight, I wasn't paying much attention to the radio chatter, now I have to give an answer to a question I didn't hear or understand.

Dodge em ups... not sure who came up with that line but it does describe them well! Even if this one feels like it's more a game where you let all the visuals in until you achieve flow-state rather than a game with longevity like VS, I suppose a game like this is acceptable at 5 bucks.

Sounds like I need to trademark "dodge 'em up" before it takes off.

QOTD; Atari's Xbox 360 take on Alone in the Dark, for sure. The analogue stick waving combat system was the worst thing about the game - Die By The Sword it is not. I'd take the classic AITD combat, even, over whatever that was.

Oh hey, you're right. That's odd. When I was writing the review, the game wasn't out yet and the price was not listed on the PlayStation website. I checked the Nintendo and Steam sites and both said $4.99, so I figured that would be the case across the board. I guess I was wrong. Good catch.

Looks interesting. QOTD, That Rodea the sky soldier game on the WiiU. Was annoying to control. Also Starfox Guard, which also had a weird control scheme.

For the QotD, I'm gonna nominate the Retro Studios DKC games. Between the Wii version of Returns' forced motion control or the 3DS version and Tropical Freeze wanting me to hold a shoulder button while pressing another button when the SNES games managed to do the same actions with just B and Y is baffling to me

I love the Geometry Wars games but without the right stick for shooting, it's just absolutely drab and loses it's soul.
