Review: NeoSprint (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, Switch & Steam) - Defunct Games

Ойындар

Defunct Games reviews NeoSprint by Atari, available June 27 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
NeoSprint is yet another fun update from Atari. Four decades after leaving its mark in pizza parlors and bowling alleys, the Sprint series is back, and you might be surprised by how faithful it is to the arcade classic. Although it’s a bit on the easy side and is sorely missing online multiplayer, this is a game jam-packed with modes, tracks and unlockables. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you’ll discover an almost unlimited amount of user-created stages just waiting to be raced. NeoSprint is a loving sequel that perfectly captures the spirit of Super Sprint.

I feel like we already have a modern iteration of this: Circuit Superstars, and it was done outstanding! It was like a hybrid between RC Pro AM and Super Sprint and they even threw in some progression elements and championship modes. This game looks like a cheap flash game you'd see in the mid 2000s.

I got to play this at PAX East and it was actually REALLY fun. It was even better when you had a few people with you and all played together. This will be a great couch game with my kids!

I wouldn't say it's like a bunch of those other games you mentioned. There is one big difference. You can see the entire track in this game. The game that comes to mind is Moto Roader for Turbo-Graphix 16. Which happens to be available on Nintendo Switch.

QOTD; Death Rally all the way. And not just because of the legacy it started as Remedy's first game, it was an absolute blast in the LAN parties in the 90s.

QotD: I'd much rather do someone else's homework or donate blood than play a single screen overhead racer. Except this game is doing everything in its power to win me over. It's my favorite, by far, at least until I have a chance to try it.

I've been playing this on the VCS since last October. A lot of the features in the broader release were in response to VCS community feedback. One cool thing about the VCS version is support for the VCS Classic Joystick's spinner control for steering.

Oh, that would be a fun way to play this game. I will admit that it is missing something without the steering wheel, but that's true of most racing games. They need to release some sort of inexpensive spinner controller for PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox.

@kitestar Yeah, it's still kicking. VCS also has Fast Food: Culinary Combat in early access. Besides Atari published games, there is typically a new indie release every week or so.

@@kitestarAtari does have good sales, though, and the 800 Bundle with the Classic Controller to use as a spinner/wheel and a modern one, for about $200. If your first purchase on the site, you can also get another 10%, making it $180. That’s how/where I got mine. It really is the best place to play their stuff, if you’re into arcade games. Hope that helps... Cheers!

I remember my mate peeing behind the arcade cabinet in the arcade we hung out in! We loved Supersprint. That, Mario, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Operation Wolf, Hyper Sports, Lethal Weapon 3 pinball machine, Narc, Final Fight, Colin Macrae, Daytona, Return of The Jedi and so many others. We were lucky and had so many great games. Funny to think you had to play an arcade game to get futuristic graphics now that we basically have arcade cabinets in our living rooms. Thanks for the review, you did it before many others and this game could become a cult classic 👍

There's one thing which kind of bothers me here, and it's the way the cars drive. Maybe it's just the way the physics are done, but I feel a realistic feel to the movement is off. Maybe it feels different when being played. Which is a shame, I was certainly interested in seeing how they'd pull this off. As for QotD: I think it's got to be Slicks, a C64 exclusive from Codemasters which had a damn neat progression system which had you challenging (or be challenged by) your rivals in each race - which could see you trading rides should you beat them (if you challenged them), or if they beat you (should they challenge you).

  • @DefunctGames

    @DefunctGames

    Ай бұрын

I wouldn't necessarily call the physics "realistic" here, but they are a lot closer to realism than what was in the arcade game. I would say that this splits the difference, erring on the side of being arcade-y and fun.

QOTD I vaguely recall something called “badlands” which was super sprint but you could blow up the other cars with rockets among other things, while I didn’t get the chance to either see it in the wild nor play it with people, I used to own midway arcade treasures 3 which apparently not very many people liked I found out years later…I liked it fine

If you build a circuit, it will on average have 4 right turns. If you build a figure 8 track, it will have 3 right turns and 3 left turns on average. Depending on geometry. So figure 8's are more balanced.

This type of game (overhead single screen) could benefit from super realistic graphic like the one you find on pro pinball series (PS1). DOTD : Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat, its pit strategy element makes it even more fun.

Yeah, Steam doesn't even have a price listed yet, so for me, not sure if it worth it or not. As for the question, think I'll go way Old School, one I had fun playing on dad's old Atari 2600 and say Indy 500.

  • @DefunctGames

I have a hunch you aren't going to like the answer to that question. That was developed and distributed by Leland Corporation. When they went out of business in 1997, Tradewest ended up picking up their assets (which, I'm assuming, included Super Off-Road). Now, Tradewest was acquired by Midway, which then sold most of its assets to Warner Bros. Interactive. It would not surprise me if WB is the one that owns the rights to that IP, which means that they'll do absolutely nothing with it. Oh how I wish Atari (or another similar company) would spend the money to buy back a lot of those IPs that Warner is essentially squatting on.

It's certainly not the fastest racing game, but that's probably for the best when it comes to an overhead racer like this. If it's too fast, it ends up being hard to control and ultimately frustrating. Once I settled in, I never felt like it was going too slow.
