Review: Rider's Spirits (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox & Switch) - Defunct Games

Ойындар

Defunct Games reviews Rider's Spirits, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox Series X.
Fans of Mode 7 racing games on the Super NES like Super Mario Kart will feel right at home playing Rider’s Spirits, a long-lost 16-bit racing game that is only now coming to America and Europe three decades late. While it’s visually a little rough and it would have been nice to have the instruction manual translated into English, this fast-paced racing game is overflowing with charm, thanks to its colorful cast of characters and unique power-up items. The levels are a bit boring and you’ll get frustrated by how much the computer opponents cheat, but fans of this style of racing game will be excited to play this rare racer. It may not be one of my favorite Super NES games, but I’m happy that Rider’s Spirits finally came West.

I was thinking of picking this up but I'm so tired of how bare-bones and low effort all these re-releases have become. Thanks for taking a look and keeping us informed!

I was curious on how this one actually turned out! maybe I'll get around to it eventually. But always cool to see ratalika tapping these old releases for a new audience. QOTD: would probably have to go with the OG, Super Mario Kart! Well I suppose F-ZERO would be the OG, but I'm not particularly good at it, haha.

I hope for a brand new Mode 7 racing game for the SNES to be released one day

Yeah, found a fan translation of the SNES ROM, and with how barebones the features sounds on this, that would be good enough for me. 😉 As for the question, you called it, going to go with Mario Kart for my answer. Don't want to disappoint after all. 😂🤣

Cool for Ratalaika Games to give stuff like this a port but not translating those manuals is a bit lazy. QOTD, Favorite Mode 7 Racer is still Mario Kart.

... genki should really consider making a current/next gen tokyo xtreme racer. I really dug the feature of only being able to race against certain racers at specific times of the day ... There was a snes cart racer that had a Frankenstein character that i enjoyed quite a bit. I remember a level with castles maybe?

Oh yeah, you're talking about Street Racer from UbiSoft. That was a good one. It even found a second lift on 32-bit consoles, like the PlayStation and Saturn.

Super Mario Kart is basically the Mode 7 racer I've played so yeah, victory by default. As for this game I'm surprised I actually hadn't heard about it at all before- never read any retrospectives or articles or seen any videos about it until now. Cool that an old game gets its time in the sun, but I wonder what made it an option for them in the first place.

I was wondering if I should pick this up. I feel like I've seen someone - maybe Retro Drew - show this off, and I know Ratalaika releases things for cheap, but I just didn't know if I could justify it when my backlog is so large currently. I'll be honest... QOTD: ... as far as Mode7 Racers go, the GBA _stomps all over the SNES_ library in terms of choices and quality. After all, there's just a handful on the SNES and they're just looking at the first Super Mario Kart. The grandaddy, who cares? The GBA got to look at several more generations of racing games including Mario Kart sequels and try to emulate/better any of those titles. Plus, both eastern _and western_ devs were doing capable things on the hardware by that time, not just eastern developers. It's got an insanely good Mode7 Racing library (as well as plenty of impressive fully 3D efforts), and while I love me some Crash Nitro Kart, Road Trip: Shifting Gears (a Choro Q/Penny Racers game) and Hot Wheels World Race on the Advance, I gotta give it to Konami Krazy Racers as my no.1 favorite Mode 7 game. It looks fantastic, has amazing music (not just because of Konami's quality music form the various series it pulls references from, but also the vocal theme was incredible to hear right when the GBA launched), and _feels better_ than Mario Kart Super Circuit by a long shot. That's not super unusual as long as people are honest with themselves and have played a decent amount of non-MK cart racers, but still worth mentioning.

Good catch. I could have sworn that the press release said it was also on PC, but it looks like it's just console. I have corrected the title and description box.
