I gotta explain this, these type of assets are known known as "billboards", flat low-res images that always face the camera, and are a cheap way to render big volumes of anything, usually used for distant stuff or things the player is not meant to see up close, and can be found in almost any 3D game. Is most commonly used for vegetation, like trees and flowers, particle systems, like rain or snow, or for big crowds of people.

1:13 A fun fact, the Grim Reaper is a playable driver in Wangan Midnight for PS3. They drive a Mazda RX-8. Both games were developed by Genki I believe. I guess they were fascinated with Shinigami, because the RX-8 has black feathered wings during the boss race encounter.

@tysonpham2153 Yeah, it's unfortunate North America didn't receive WMMT 4. However, it did receive WMMT 5 and skipped WMMT 5DX. North America currently has WMMT 5DX+, to which most say is the best version. I've been playing WMMT 5 and 5 DX+ since 2019. It's my first in the series, and while I've played WMMT 6. WMMT 5DX+ I still enjoy more. Europe never saw another release after WMMT 3DX+.

@@LegendHusky Yeah thanks, I forgot the American also had WMMT 5 but not DX, and I didn’t even know Europe never had WMMT 3, must be a shame for them to miss out I also played WMMT 5 but I started with DX+, and with WMMT 6RR, I enjoyed it, expected with the story mode, it’s literally a waste of money to obtain previous ost to played while in pvp or ghost battles, but still I enjoyed the series. I even used Aventador in pvp and ghost battle bc I loved how it’s big enough to ram other players (also it a real pain to turn this thing whenever there is a tight turn)

The Burnout 3 "impact time" audio is not an easter egg but it's... unsettling, to say the least. Always creeped me out since I was a kid.

One of the scariest video games is the Alpha version of Burnout 3. The Alpha version had titles like "Burnout 3: Crash + Burn" and "Burnout 3: See You In Hell"

In the late 90’s/early 2000’s, my cousin downloaded the demo for this colorful E Rated racing game where players raced aquatic vehicles like jet skins, speed boats, hovercrafts or something. I noticed that in one of the water streams we raced on that there was a dead floating body hidden in a way that most people would speed by it without noticing.

Can say with a bit unsettling with Midbight Club LA where on certain locations, there is some backround dialogue of an argument between an guy named Bryan and his mom. Presumably its about going out late at night but his mom wouldn't want him go out dispite him already being at that age according to him

Theres also some creepy ambience in NFS Underground 1. The ambiences in the industrial area and slums can sound pretty strange

Yo. Tokyo Xtreme Racer series is probably my favorite racing game of all time, I never realized Death Driver had that. I know the likes of red rain for Blood Hound (I think?) but never to that extend. I might replay this game again just to look see this easter egg.

I have a suggestion. In old Colin McRae rally 3 on stage 3 in Spain after passing 3rd checkpoint and right turn after checkpoint you can see a big wall with big gate. When you drive up to the gate you can see a red blinding pair of angry eyes in the dark tunnel. This creepy stuff is only in PC version of CMR3

It didn't become, burnout was inspired by Thrill drive, released in 1998, Konami made it. Criterion games got inspired and made the first burnout game in 2001

One I noticed was on the PS2 Game WRC 3: The Official Game of the FIA World Rally Championship. When you go past certain crowds, they watch your car drive past, now they might not seem soo bad but its like they're on a rotating platform, its pretty freaky if you've got to to a rally with multiple slow hairpin turns.

Those are billboard textures. Pretty common to see them as filler in racing games such as crowds and trees.

Nicely done video. Simple and tidy. I really appreciate to video like this. Also glad you didn't put something like "Gran Turismo 6 creepy face texture on Trial Mountain!", because that one is just only because how textures are work. If you're planning to make a Part 2, I'd like to recommend the one from Choro-Q on PS2. There's one specific very creepy event that could occur in 1/10 chance after finishing Rosspury's event. Its extremely rare event, but there's one guy who's uploaded the video on KZread. So, fear not. Also make sure you have a volumes on with this event, as "music" is also a creepy (kinda) part too.

Especially with the music turned down and driving alone with no opponents and no traffic. Driving slowly through the docks, past the sewage treatment plant and into the tunnel, then through the red light district, past the curved building with the giant pillars where the chopper hovers over you, under the subway bridge, down towards the park and church and then between the dilapidated warehouses on the way back into the docks, with the ambient sounds the only passengers is unsettling. On top of that the PS1 version has Dolby Surround encoding so with an upmixer like Dolby Pro Logic II or Dolby Surround Upmixer, those sounds envelop you and can come from any direction. Creepy. One of my favorite driving game tracks for that very reason.

@@Zacabeb I'm glad to see someone (in this case, 3 people) mention this game and this track! In truth, the PS1 version has a hidden, unfinished alternate version of Empire City, which is incomplete and broken, and supposedly goes through a forest, some sort of canyon and other industrial infrastructure (the textures are not visible) and that gives an even creepier feeling than the regular Empire City. It's a shame the developers were never able to finish that track and put it in the full game, or even in High Stakes. Also, both of the songs that play on Empire City in NFS 3 specifically, are also sort of creepy in their own way, with a lot of curious background sounds.

@@longtailgt I remember that from back in the day! :) I think Coal Harbour was supposed to be a full-on companion track to Empire City given where it splits off and rejoins (the exit ramp in the tunnel pretty much confirmed there was something they had intended to add, especially as they removed that ramp and the connecting street by the church in the PC version.) While the associated track files were found pretty quickly on the PS1 game disc, there was no good way of investigating what they contained at the time. From the video I've seen of Coal Harbour after it was made accessible, it does look pretty interesting even though it lacks its proper texture set. I want to remember there being yet another extra track file aside from the unfinished Coal Harbour and the secret bonus tracks, but never found out if it contained anything at all playable.

@@Zacabeb It was indeed supposed to be the alternate version of Empire City, and actually was likely going to be called Empire Park (which is believable as the track does go through a park). Even though Coal Harbour has been mentioned as a possible name, it seems like a very off name for the track and I believe it's more likely that it was a location on the map (like the Neptune tunnel on Aquatica) but still, I'm not sure. I don't think anyone has found any other hidden track file in this game apart from the unfinished TR02B and the secret tracks. However, there were apparently going to be a couple more tracks planned but it seems they were cancelled long before any work began, and the only proof of their supposed existence are their names in one of the game files.

To add onto the npcs in the forza horizon games, animated npcs with show up as static ones that blankly stare at you if you look at your mirrors in any car while in first person mode, which tbh is even creepier since as soon as you move the camera to look at them directly, they go back to moving like normal

damn I've played a lot of TXR3 and never knew about the death driver, kinda creepy that all the car textures change like that. It is nice though to see TXR3 without all the yellow Genki branded cars, kinda wish the traffic had more variety in that game like TXR0.

In the game NFS The Run, literally the first mission, after escaping the red Porsche from being crushed, Jack (the main protagonist) steals the mafias car an Audi RS4 If you drive the opposite direction of the track, you can see the exact same Audi RS4 totaled, it’s pretty hard to reach that part because the game will respawn you to go forward, so you have to reverse very slowly.

For the NFS heat one. The reason why weird sounds come when you are in the barn is the traffic cars next to you on the highway. You can also the similar sounds in tunnel near the main city. In short game thinks the barn is a tunnel

The last entry happens because those sprites are designed to lock onto the camera face on so that way you never see their edge since they are 2 dimensional. They used sprites for the back part of the crowd to save memory as you said and because they don't need highly detailed people for the back of the crowd.

I had a nightmare about the NFS Heat barn. 😂 Also now a Nissan S15 can be scary now.

The last one is less of an easter egg and more of just having flat textures of spectators always turning so they face directly the player's point of view. I don't know the exact name of this effect but it's used in other racing games as well. Wreckfest too has some quite strange spectators on its maps that use this effect. This method has also been used to simulate trees in 2D, and other minor things not meant to be seen up close by the player.

What's creepier in FH2 and GT7 is that they both have every Corvette except the C5, and nobody cared about it except me... #WeNeedC5

Someone probably stated this already but as I can't find it I'll explain the last entry. To save on resources, a common development technique is using LODs, which means a high detail model you see up close gets replaced by lesser detailed variants the devs prepared, until the model gets culled entirely by the draw distance or other culling methods. Depending on the dev, sometimes the lowest LOD can end up being just a flat plane with a low resolution "photo" of the model, like the case in that entry. Now, when a game object doesn't have multiple LODs, that model stays regardless of how close you are, and Playground Games in this case decided to use NPC models for the rows closest to the barriers the players can drive up to, and pad out the crowd with the 2D ones. Gran Turismo also does this a lot for people near the barriers or at the bleachers, as well as other racing games. As for why they are all facing the camera? that effect is called billboarding, where the game object is coded to always face the camera, else looking at the crowd from certain angles would look weird. If you ever played Wolfenstein/Doom-like games with 3D environments and 2D sprites, this is used profusely, although those games do change the sprite direction based on your position relative to where they're facing. Source: lot of indie "3d environment with 2d assets" games I played, and also worked on a project that required a dense forest marking the map limits, but light enough on resources it could be played in VR on a GTX 1060, which is one of the bare minimum cards for acceptable VR, meaning all trees had to be 2D sprites facing the camera through billboarding.

The TXR3 easter egg is awesome.

Discovered glitch years ago in NFSU2 . South of City centre on the riverside there is burger king , if you park right tight to it from the side of the river and start using hydraulics , car jumps up 2 heights of that building , nothing super duper but still it only worked in that one place

I got another for you, and it's pretty obscure as me and my brother seem to be the only ones aware of it. In San Francisco Rush 2049, on the sunset track in a cave tunnel, there are these white furry creatures with red eyes and what seems to be blood on their mouths. We used to explore the outskirts of tracks when we were young and those always stuck out as being a little creepy.

In need for speed the run there’s a Sasquatch sighting in the million dollar highway event. And a sighting of a Jurassic bird that was supposedly went extinct when driving in the ice mountains.

okay i thought i knew every little detail about the TXR games. but even i had Zero clue about the ghost car, i just figured it was a dude who crashed a lot, i also did not like the body kit for there car once unlocked so never used it in game. but holy wow imma have to fire up my PS2 and give it a look for my self now.

In the crew 2 i forget where but there is an IT reference in a sewer system near a light house

I had made a creepy discovery about Snowrunner once and all I did was turn off every sound setting except for the ambiance and you can hear the wind but the Alaska map is so much creepier with the sound of the old metal structures creaking and sounding like they're gonna fall down but it's actually fitting since you are driving through basically ghost towns plus on the maps you can see glowing eyes in the trees and some of the buildings

You should try Distance (its simple name makes it ungoogleable so I'll also mention it's by React Studios). You can make a whole video about that racing game, but there's not a ton of "discoveries" to be made, since most of the scares are intentional. There have been some, however, found in the game's stages, that aren't immediately obvious. There are Steam Guides about it IIRC.

Scariest racing game is the gran turismo games on the ps1 and ps2 those games lasted way too long packed with so much content let alone the 300 lap race >_

5:55 Some of the NPC are just sprites that have one frame, and are not changing no matter at what angle you are looking them.

There's this Mario and Pac-Man arcade racing game where they found a picture taken during the Serbaian war or something in the game files

The crew 1 was such a great game, screw ubisoft for shutting it's servers down.

Driving 172 laps in suzuka in gt5 actually made me hear some weird noises and made me paranoid
