Up and down tricks have a purpose too! Check the "related video" at the bottom left! The final clip is the world record on Mount Wario by legendary Japanese player "F". No, just the trick direction. Either you spin up, right, left, or down depending on which direction you were holding

You can always choose the trick direction (up down left right neutral), but the available animations depends on the type of trick ramp. High ramps give different animations from low ramps!

There are secret trick animations as well. I’ve noticed with Link that if you do a neutral trick in a short time after doing another trick, he’ll turn around and flash the triforce

That's actually based on the height of the jump! If you go off a big ramp, and will have a lot of air time, or you go off a medium jump in zero G, then you're more likely to do those animations. They can be cancelled bu holding down or up, but those animations will still play if you trick right or left!

I’ve played mario kart 8 for years and im only just discovering the sharp, and counter trick.

You always seem to amaze me

I actually noticed this aspect. I even learned that by doing what I coined as a "flip trick" (holding your stick vertically in either direction, it cancels out your "antigrav trick" (a trick done that can only be done in antigravity) I've learned a bit too much about miscellaneous trick facts in MK8DX. I could honestly talk about like 3 more about the animation that plays.

Wow, I never knew this! I always refrained from tricking before sharp turns, but I gotta try this out now!

I play in division 6 out of 21 of Mario Kart Universal, I am high gold 2 in Lounge (ranked Mario kart) and I still don't completely pay attention to this kind of details. Also I like the trick where Peach blows a kiss (the neutral trick, where you don't touch your stick)

i'm gold 2 in lounge and also didn't know this was explicitly a thing, i usually always just alignment hop in the direction i wanna trick anyway

I usually just neutral trick unless I need to do I directional trick because Dry Bowser’s blue fire he breathes out in one of his trick animations looks so cool

I bought this game in both 2014 and 2018 and NOW I'm learning you can choose the direction of your tricks.

I can't believe that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has more technical maneuvers in it than Super Smash Brothers Ultimate...

Yes, this is not just a high level technique. If you are in a situation where your alignment is weird and you know you need a sharp or wide turn soon, you choose the trick direction accordingly. It's super helpful!

I knew about sharp tricking, but not counter tricking. Interesting. For straight lines, I always backflip because I think it looks the coolest.

Wait this is actually incredibly useful. One of the few issues I had left to crack on 200cc was needing to drift after a ramp. Before, I would just drift before going off the ramp to priorotize control over speed but now I know I can do both.

This season is so WRECKED it made Syphers' hair shorter💀💀💀. (look at the thumbnail)

I’ve been doing the alternate tricks my whole life, but I didn’t know they had functionality I thought it was just cosmetic. That’s pretty groovers.

I think the best part about Mk8d is you can pick this stuff up and subconsciously take advantage. I realized watching that I always trick to the right on the ramp used an example but never thought about if it is changing gameplay or the race. Now I know, kinda cool.
