Review: qomp2 (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, Switch & Steam) - Defunct Games

Defunct Games reviews qomp2 by Atari, available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Atari VCS, Xbox Series X, Switch, PC, Linux and Mac.
It’s time to once again bounce your way to safety in qomp2, the fun (and occasionally frustrating) adventure game that takes place in the world of Pong. With simple two-button gameplay, the ball is limited in how it can interact with the world, but that doesn’t stop this action/puzzler from coming up with a whole host of innovative ideas and obstacles. Sadly, much like the 2021 original, this game ends right when it’s starting to get good, but there are enough levels, bosses and collectibles to warrant the price. Now, let’s see if we can convince the Breakout ball to team up with the Pong ball for the start-studded third installment.

I think Robotron would have a lot of potential as an Ys or Zelda-esque RPG adventure, combined with some bullet hell elements, upgradable guns and maybe a town or castle (maybe a space colony?) like Suikoden. Give all the rescuable humans names and character designs, and each one you save would go live in your town. Some could be party members, open shops or provide healing, etc

The Terminator is basically Robotron fan fiction.

It kind of reminds me of a Snake clone named Curvatron, where all you do is press one button to play. It's a simple idea, that makes for a surprisingly difficult experience.

I think the title Electric Boogaloo would truly fit when it comes to Qomp 2. 😉 As for the question, if I'm remembering my video game history, wasn't Space Invaders the next game released after Pong? It was either that or Pac-Man, but Pac-Man already has an RPG anyways, so maybe go down the line and do Space Invaders next. How? Idk, but didn't think you could do one for Pong either, so I'm sure they could think of something.

Kind of got into it watching you avoid that dog thing trying to eat you. Need to give this one a try. QOTD, Tron could easily make a good RPG.

I think it would be awesome to see Golden Axe turned into a rpg adventure. That would be really interesting for sure to add to the story, lore and characters. Perhaps Alter Beast could also be really interesting as a rpg adventure.

First game had 2 versions of every level, does this one have the same feature ?

Nope, just one. Unless I'm missing something. However, each level does have an extra collectible to get, so you may need to play each level more than once.

Man, I didn't even know Pong had ONE gritty reboot game, let alone a series of them! But consider my interest piqued- would you recommend playing the first one before this, or is there nothing to be really gained from doing so?

The original qomp feels like a trial run for this game. It has a few different puzzle types and a couple that are repeated in this sequel. There's no real reason you have to play the first game before this, outside of it giving you different puzzles and level designs. You'll won't feel like you're missing out if you start with qomp2.

I believe that it's a good game, but I just can't get excited about that gameplay footage. It just seems slow and kinda boring.

This is definitely one of those games that you don't want to be too fast. If the game is much faster, it's going to be really hard navigating through the tight areas of the game and will feel uncontrollable at times. I suspect this is one of those games that's more fun to play than to watch being played.
